There were alot of babies with cleft lip and cleft palatte and that is caused by a vitamin deficiency. You can find all kinds of baby stories on youtube on these deformities. It's actually amazing. I just personally wouldn't blame it all on the radiation.

@HaloReplicas The initial cause was mismanagement but the reactor design had several flaws including a virtually nonexistent containment structure,but the fatal flaw was the Soviet RBMK reactor design itself.It was piss-poor and known to be so even before the reactor was built.Possibly the reactor could have been stabilized if it weren't for the mismanagement but it's unlikely.It DID happen during some kind of experiment but the experiment itself wasn't the cause.

I was living in the Sovviet Union in that time, I so everything by myself; only after 2 weeks (!!!) communist leaders informed about nuclear accident soviet people. 2 weeks were no information about, no medical help, There were no medical help, even iodine was not available in drugstores.
That was horrific time for people.

The radiation released from the accident increased the rate of congenital malformations - meaning that they had been occurring anyway. About 3% of human births have a major physical abnormality without radiation effects. But we assume these are all because of the reactor. That's called confirmation bias.

@HaloReplicas The initial cause was mismanagement but the reactor design had several flaws including a virtually nonexistent containment structure,but the fatal flaw was the Soviet RBMK reactor design itself.It was piss-poor and known to be so even before the reactor was built.Possibly the reactor could have been stabilized if it weren't for the mismanagement but it's unlikely.It DID happen during some kind of experiment but the experiment itself wasn't the cause.
