The announcers for that AFC Championship Game between the Browns and the Broncos in January 1987 (one month before I was born) are Dick Enberg, Bob Griese and Merlin Olsen (R.I.P.). Am I right?
If you watch the America's Game series, you recognize the ref's voice. That's the same ref who called the Sugar Bear Hamilton roughing the passer penalty in the '76 Raiders/Patriots playoff.
These old games are fun to watch. The only real thing I remember from the game in terms of the details was Gastineau's blunder. My memory was right for once as it was a major gaff.
Also, would this happen to be the game where Brian Bennan wiped out the camera guy who was sitting near the hill by the end zone? If so, make it two things I actually remembered about this game before watching it.
@Mr86kmartclock I fall into that exact same category and couldn't agree more. People forget all the injuries the Jets had late in 86, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
When Freeman McNeil scored Jets radio announcer Charlie Steiner was screaming, "The Jets are going to win the football game! The Jets are going to the AFC championship game!". Four minutes later the Browns tied it, then won it in the second overtime period.
Steiner is a great announcer, but four minutes is still plenty of time for a team to score ten points and come from behind.
I still nearly jump out of my seat when I see WebStar catch that pass on the 5 yrd line. I was at this game with my dad, who passed away this year, and I will NEVER forget the absolute pandemonium that broke out when the Browns tied up the game. We knew they were going to win. Sadly, this is STILL the greatest victory the Browns have won in my lifetime.
I wonder who Bob Trumpy was rooting for in this game? "Quit celebrating. Throw the ball out of bounds, throw the ball out of bounds!" What a joke... I remember this game vividly and it making me sick in January 1987; watching it again I hope Gastineau would hold up, but every time he still drills Kosar late. It would have been 3rd and 24 from the 17. i hated Joe Walton. What a conservative coach he was; he always melted down when it counted, and the Jets had some quality teams in that era
@intsoccersuperstar1 At that time, Cowher was considered to be one of the bright young coaches in the NFL. Cleveland had a chance to get Cowher as the head coach, but hired that douche bag Belichoke. He ruined the Browns and they haven't been the same since.
@holdemgti Belicek has been getting a bum rap from Cleveland for years. The fact is, he got them a home playoff game in '94 and the following year the team was playing .500 ball when the move to Baltimore was announced. Team tanked after that.
@sosdkny agree the entire defense was to blame for after that penalty..however, without that penalty Jets win..it doesn't matter. Jets would have blew it in the next game anyway.
That pass interference penalty then the holding penalty on the punt killed them. Then the Jets were passive on there last drive on regulation also. Walton still has nightmares about this game.
And there's the great Joe Walton picking his nose at 5:26 . What a disgrace...I was 16 at the time...suffering through 1982 mud bowl, this debacle, and many others including plenty of draft blunders. I'm still rooting though....J E T S!!!!

If Kosar was the Browns quarterback, then who is the QB for the Jets at that time?
kimv020887 1 month ago
The Greatest Cleveland Browns quarterbacks for me are: Otto Graham, Frank Ryan, Brian Sipe, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde and Derek Anderson.

And the next game for Cleveland after this win was the heartbreaking "Drive" by Elway.

When did they get rid of that 'sack in the last 2 minutes' rule?

That was 25 years ago today, January 3, 1987.

Two things - Bill Cowher, special teams coach!
The second - How great was Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy? Two great announcers.

@toeazy34 the brennan game was the snowstorm game against Houston in 1988 with Don Strock at QB.

I've been a Jet fan since 1981, and have seen them get to 4 AFC title games and lose, but this was the most devastating loss I ever saw.

Did anyboy notice that Bernie nearly threw an interception when trying to throw the ball away? That was a risky throw at 11.28.

Marty was so conservative kicking the ball with 11 seconds left. Plenty of time for another play in the endzone

Does anyone else think that it's just weird to see Cowher dressed in Browns gear? Even though it's 1986, it's just wrong.

Blame Gastineau all you want but the bottom line still remained:
up 10 with 3 minutes to go and the Browns are at there own 30.
Who do you blame then??

0:56 the hit that changed the game as Gastineau blindsided Kosar - suddenly the game turned against the Jets.

1- WTF was Joe Walton thinking by calling a QB draw with O'Brien?
2- The Jets D-Backs got burned too many times here.
3- Still painful 24 years later
