@reachsavio Radar is a great help, you ar 100% right. But in Sigapore strait the lookout is even more importent as the ranges is extremly close and the radar calc drag a minute or two behind. The change of silhouette of the ship often becomes the first indication of a unexpected turn of another vessel.
After one year in Singapore strait (everyday with a cruise ship) I can say it is the most difficult place in the world to navigate ! (my quite well based opinion)
@lpv1899 Actually, the Hapag Llloyd ship was the give way vessel, it does not go by size. A VLCC can very well be constrained by draft. There is an allowance in the rules that allows you to break the rules to avoid collision.
this is not called as "collision" but it is a near miss. this happened when engine is 2 rpm over "Full" and crash astern also failed becos of high ahd momentum.
@voderick actually the GPS is not needed to caluculate the CPA (closest point of approach)
CPA can be calculated manually or by an ARPA radar, the speed value should always be throw water which means its the log that should give you the speed and not the GPS.
They didn't know COLREG

YES! ONLY RADAR can Help u.
But according to Traffic rules, in such cases both ships need to b informed abt ship speed....
this is jst due to bridge crew neglegence. they shud be monitoring da RADAR during heavy traffic.

The container ship was from the left, it was up to the tanker to stand clear.

GPS
By using radar and GPS can you calculate what the meeting will be.
STOP calling this "collision".
In water with massic traffic must you relay on systems on board.....

Yeah this was close, the tanker had to turn to port to avoid this when it should have been the container vessel keeping out of the way.

@voderick By using GPS??
GPS has nothing to do with that.
Only a radar will suite the job, and this is very close.
You obviously know nothing about ships.
