  • now that was calming

  • ...Aaaand subscribed.

  • wow

  • With amazing animation like this being made why do week keep ending up with the crappy, flat, stiff pointy stuff that dominates tv right now?

  • @melancholymistress89 The "crappy, flat, stiff pointy stuff" is cheaper, faster and easier to make. Kids will watch pretty much anything and if you can use less time and money to make something, then you yield higher profits. The people running the TV stations, for the most part, don't care about putting up unique and interesting things. They just care about making money.

  • @prettybirdiesmmk The technology used to make cartoons like that isn't new, and there have been ways to skimp on animation costs for ages. Just look at most anime and earlier made-for-tv cartoons. Cost cutting isn't new. The style that most new cartoons use is, and it's more of a horrible trend than anything based around lazy producers. Companies are honestly looking at shows like George of the Jungle and trying to emulate it, not just because it's cheaper. It just now seems to be dissipating.

  • Looks like something you'd expect to see from Samurai Jack, very well done.

  • That tiny green bug was adorable! The ending with the owl decomposing was awesomely sick.

  • Wow the lighting looks so nice. I think I'll try that method you mentioned. I'm trying to learn animation on my own. Currently attending SVA for computer art though.. Do you know if there is a way to still attend Calarts after getting a BFA?

  • Well... this certainly ebats the crap out of what I do...

  • That was well done! the only thing that would have made me enjoy it more, is if the evil creature was a bat. I'm kinda partial to birds :P lol

  • My first impressions where somewhere between Zelda Wind Waker and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away :)

    Great job!

  • I WANT THAT LITTLE CRICKET AS A PET!!!! X3

  • Wow, this was exceptionally good. Thank you!

  • There's kind of a Ghibli vibe, in Samurai Jack's style. AWESOME!

  • Thank you for sharing this, I've seen it months ago in Cartoon Brew's blog, I had to put this in my favourites, it's really inspiring, the ending might be a bit rough (violent) everything looks just so cute... you don't expect that... in my case.. I love it all... *sigh* simply AWESOME!

  • is it possible we do a 3D? and how did u draw so equally for all the characters

  • this should be screened on tv. This is so much better than the 3D animations I see on tv every morning!!! D:<

  • this is incredible! I love it!!! well done!! <3

  • Ughhhhh I want to transfer to CalArts so badlyyy. This is fantastic!

  • This is quite well done! The decomposing of the owl is a bit disturbing, but I think many of us have the stomach to sit through it^^

  • This was splendid to watch. I really hope that you do another animation soon!

  • Wow, this was awesome! Coming from somebody who's hoping to (somehow) get into Calarts in a few years, how long would something like this take? This is coming from someone who did an animation elective earlier this year, was enthusastic enough to go all out with the hand-drawn stuff as opposed to that newer Flash style... And got majorly burned out about halfway through with just how hard it got putting everything together. D:

  • @Astrosanity Oh! Uh, basically, I came up with the idea the previous May, did a really rough pass of storyboards that I kept messing around with all of first semester, and then got to work on production from December until late April. :x It's rather longer than most Calarts films will go on for..... And it's all digital, Flash animation with Photoshop backgrounds and After Effects compositing :O

  • @Astrosanity Oh, and good luck in applying to Calarts, ne?

  • Very beautiful! :)

  • kill or be killed!

  • kinda feel sorry for the owl, but it was still cut xD

  • the 2 people that dislike this are owls

  • @lycan343

Lol well.... I have noticed that pretty much all the angry comments are from people who didn't like that I killed the owl XD

I am an owl lover at heart!

  • @arytheloser yeah, i mean equal opportunity for animals, too! owls can be good or bad, just like people! I love owls too, and am also deliciously creeped out by them at the same time~

    good film!

  • @arytheloser

I was about to comment about that. And it seem to me you had two choices. One, after eaten she could of force her way out, while the owl makes all kind of weird faces.when she is finally out she beats the owl silly and somehow make him join the light side(old school style). Or Two, Kill it, wait God knows how long for the owl to discompose and then party inside its carcass (new school style).

Oh! and I would kill to go to CalArts someday for character animation! You lucky!

  • loved his expressions and hand gestures!

  • that was insane o.o

  • PRINCE OF BUGS IS EPIC WIN~ ... that's all :D

  • AW THEY KILLED THAT CUTE OWL! FUCK U FOR KILLING IT! FUUUUCK YOUU!!!!!

  • OMG!! It's a ladybug rogue from WoW! (World of Warcraft) lol

  • I though the hero was a girl!

  • wow, thats, thats, disturbingly awsome!

  • wha.. bu.. poor owl :(

  • Damn! This is well made. Did you do this on your own? Oh my goodness! Amazing! Simply amazing!

The facial expressions here are definitely on point. And so is the music...wow! I think your animation short kicks Pixar's out of the park.

  • @Sermalla I wouldn't go that far, but this person is really talented and do have potential of eventually making it to some well-respected animation studio in the future :)

  • Wow.. that was really awesome!!

    I love the art style.

  • wow... epic

  • What a cute video it is.

  • This is exceptionally good!

  • Great job! The style and character design were amazing. I loved how some of the bugs heads weren't attached. That owl was sic.

  • you are great!!! ahhh..my skill on Flash not that good like u..u can see my video..

but is not too good..sorry for my bad English..

  • that was awesome!

  • Did you import all the backgrounds from Photoshop, or was this completely done in Flash?

  • @AstroRobyn

All the backgrounds are in Photoshop, all the character animation in Flash. I then imported both into After Effects and did compositing and lighting effects in that program. : )

  • #LOL

  • very cool!!! keep working like that!!

  • reminds me of mushishi

  • Woah I was expecting something super cute. But still good

  • Love this animation style

  • he killed an owl over an aphid and I'm pretty sure ladybirds eat aphids

  • @lemonsyay1

Maybe the owl was just a jerk?

    Haruki does not forgive.

  • @lemonsyay1 I don't think he was a ladybird...he was just wearing a ladybird's shell, so he's presumably killed one of those, too, which is consistent with his love of aphids (though maybe that's a planthopper)

  • Really nice work!

  • that Owl got owned

  • beautiful artwork!

  • I love this!!!

  • good

  • That is so cool! I love it x3

  • Holy shit, that poor owl.

  • This is just so soft and fluid. The colors and lines are really seamless!

  • My God, this is absolutely gorgeous. For some reason the cell shading reminds me a little bit of Zelda: Wind Waker, but it takes it entirely on its own direction and ambience.

Love it, the music, the colors, the animation, characters, design, story, everything! This is insane just how blown away I am!

  • @AguilarRudametkin The entire bird fight. Oh god the nostalgia

  • @AguilarRudametkin

I was thinking the exact same thing! (i'm actually re-playing the game right now)

It's probably because there are no black outlines, something I really love about the art style of Wind Waker

either way, very beautifully animated video

  • Wow, I'm very impressed! The story is short but quite compelling (and I'm glad the little bug didn't die!), and the character animation is quite subtle and nice to watch. :-)

  • you're good. I suck. :) adorable and amazing. Good Job!

  • This is so adorable, even with a morbid end for the owl. :3

  • This is really amazing !

Its the best second-year film I have ever seen !

I cannot wait for your third-year film !

Great work! I really envy CalArts people ! Wow

  • ooooh it's so beautiful!! <3

  • That was very nice looking-- the owl part came as a bit of a shock to me, and the look of how it was when it was dead... Was surprisingly morbid. A definite twist to something that started out as a very calming animation.

Good work for your second-year film. :)b

  • It's great! I just can't stand the owl dying. I just have this huuuge love and soft spot for owls. ;_;

  • That was beautiful.

    Great job!

  • Wow, that is just... incredible! Very few things I've seen can equal this.

  • I adore your style! This is just beautiful! Excellent work!

  • SOOO GOOOD :D

  • that is sooo COOOL!!!! ;D

  • Awesome! A lovely parade turned into a badass fight scene! :D

  • Beautiful. Lovely animation as well. You are very good with flash :)

  • FFFFT!! It's gorgeous!! Oh goodness, I have been waiting for this for the longest time; I'm so glad it's finished. Hee, I love Haruki. That little bug was adorable. So fluid! So colorful! So detailed! I'm favoriting. <3

  • that was gorgeous

  • Eeeeee, it came out so terrific!! 8D
