@melancholymistress89 The "crappy, flat, stiff pointy stuff" is cheaper, faster and easier to make. Kids will watch pretty much anything and if you can use less time and money to make something, then you yield higher profits. The people running the TV stations, for the most part, don't care about putting up unique and interesting things. They just care about making money.
@prettybirdiesmmk The technology used to make cartoons like that isn't new, and there have been ways to skimp on animation costs for ages. Just look at most anime and earlier made-for-tv cartoons. Cost cutting isn't new. The style that most new cartoons use is, and it's more of a horrible trend than anything based around lazy producers. Companies are honestly looking at shows like George of the Jungle and trying to emulate it, not just because it's cheaper. It just now seems to be dissipating.
Wow the lighting looks so nice. I think I'll try that method you mentioned. I'm trying to learn animation on my own. Currently attending SVA for computer art though.. Do you know if there is a way to still attend Calarts after getting a BFA?
Thank you for sharing this, I've seen it months ago in Cartoon Brew's blog, I had to put this in my favourites, it's really inspiring, the ending might be a bit rough (violent) everything looks just so cute... you don't expect that... in my case.. I love it all... *sigh* simply AWESOME!
Wow, this was awesome! Coming from somebody who's hoping to (somehow) get into Calarts in a few years, how long would something like this take? This is coming from someone who did an animation elective earlier this year, was enthusiastic enough to go all out with the hand-drawn stuff as opposed to that newer Flash style... And got majorly burned out about halfway through with just how hard it got putting everything together. D:

@Astrosanity Oh! Uh, basically, I came up with the idea the previous May, did a really rough pass of storyboards that I kept messing around with all of first semester, and then got to work on production from December until late April. :x It's rather longer than most Calarts films will go on for..... And it's all digital, Flash animation with Photoshop backgrounds and After Effects compositing :O
@arytheloser yeah, i mean equal opportunity for animals, too! owls can be good or bad, just like people! I love owls too, and am also deliciously creeped out by them at the same time~
I was about to comment about that. And it seem to me you had two choices. One, after eaten she could of force her way out, while the owl makes all kind of weird faces.when she is finally out she beats the owl silly and somehow make him join the light side(old school style). Or Two, Kill it, wait God knows how long for the owl to discompose and then party inside its carcass (new school style).
Oh! and I would kill to go to CalArts someday for character animation! You lucky!
@Sermalla I wouldn't go that far, but this person is really talented and do have potential of eventually making it to some well-respected animation studio in the future :)
All the backgrounds are in Photoshop, all the character animation in Flash. I then imported both into After Effects and did compositing and lighting effects in that program. : )
@lemonsyay1 I don't think he was a ladybird...he was just wearing a ladybird's shell, so he's presumably killed one of those, too, which is consistent with his love of aphids (though maybe that's a planthopper)
My God, this is absolutely gorgeous. For some reason the cell shading reminds me a little bit of Zelda: Wind Waker, but it takes it entirely on its own direction and ambience.
Love it, the music, the colors, the animation, characters, design, story, everything! This is insane just how blown away I am!
Wow, I'm very impressed! The story is short but quite compelling (and I'm glad the little bug didn't die!), and the character animation is quite subtle and nice to watch. :-)
That was very nice looking-- the owl part came as a bit of a shock to me, and the look of how it was when it was dead... Was surprisingly morbid. A definite twist to something that started out as a very calming animation.
FFFFT!! It's gorgeous!! Oh goodness, I have been waiting for this for the longest time; I'm so glad it's finished. Hee, I love Haruki. That little bug was adorable. So fluid! So colorful! So detailed! I'm favoriting. <3
now that was calming

With amazing animation like this being made why do week keep ending up with the crappy, flat, stiff pointy stuff that dominates tv right now?
