  • J.D. Sumner is the next best singer to Elvis Presley. Besides my father they are two great talents whom are very missed. I'm proud to be in the process of making a CD in honor of my father. If you hav'nt heard J.L. Clark sing you've missed something my friend. ..Robert Clark 11-11-11

  • No George said their is nobody I druther hear than you

  • Wow, I used to work on Volkswagens with Ace and so did my Nephew. Ace also sang some music with Elvis and the Sunshine Boys. I had not talked to him in a while and when I started looking I assumed he had passed away. My brother passed away and I recently got some of my mothers stuff (She used to write religious music) There was a program I picked up from the early 50s that my mother had a write up and also her song, Ace was on one of the pages what a surprise!

  • What a treasure. Just happened to stumble on this. Great to see my old friend Ace Richman. I miss you Ace.

  • don't want to add confusion on this topic of jd, but as i remember in the 60's he had throat surgery or at least had to stop singing for quite awhile, that is when sterban sang bass for the stamps due to jd's throat problems. i thought he was through singing and then he started again but was only a ghost of his previous singing although i still enjoyed him. although his tone was never the same, i always thought he was on key, even on the low notes

  • Not sure why everyone is crapping ion JD. JD biggest asset was that he was lower then everyone else. He could sing very clear at a middle range but people wanted to hear him sing the bottom out of the note that's all. Listen to "Somebody Loves me" when he's singing withthe Blackwoods and then listen to him singing Why Me Lord in the 70's and 80's. His voice was getting shaky in the late 90's and on but that tradionally happens with big bass voices like that.

  • I guess I started this, but sure didn't mean to disrespect JD. Actually I think he is one of the most talented people to ever step on ANY stage. You are right, concerning his vocal deteriation in his later years and I think the general public has heard more of him at this stage than early on when his vocal quality was spot on. I think JD must have done something awful to RedCeltYank1 cause he cuts him no slack! LOL

  • Now, Fred Daniel, that's a singer! That guy was still singing sweet when they put him in the casket. The Blue Ridge Qt. had the most underrated singers in SG history...Fred, Burl Strevel, and Donnie Seabolt. All three should be in the HOF.

  • um that is jd he is tall

  • Awesome clip. Thanks Dean!

  • Yes, that is definitely J.D.

  • He's only 27, but yes that's J.D. He sounds great. It's nice hearing him at this early age and listening to him through the years as he progresses.

  • Hmm, it doesn't quite soundlike J.D. but, still good :)

  • I agree totally. There are other recordings during this same time frame that JD sang in and the comarison is astounding. I didn't know about his having throat surgery but it explains a few things....

  • Sure that's J.D.? Sounds good but doesn't sound like him.

  • The fact that is does sound good would explain why you couldn't decipher JD's voice, considering he's the most overrated bass singer in history. All low notes and no tone...

  • Wow, strong words RedCelt. I sure wasn't implying that J.D. was not good because he was good. His tones just sound richer here. I think he started losing quality when his voice dropped. I don't think he was rated that high, except for the low thing. Not too many people would have chose him over Chief or Younce.

  • George Younce said on many occassions: "That there is nobody he rather hear than JD."

  • Good point!! LOL

  • You totally missed the joke. He was totally slamming JD when he said that! The actual quote was, "JD, there isn't anyone I wouldn't rather here sing than you." LOL

  • I knew what Younce meant, but judocrazy714's comment struck me funny because of how he misinterpreted that whole incident.

  • You are dead wrong. JD sung the world's lowest notes with tone. George Younce said that when most people attempt to sing low, they sound like they are growling. George then said that JD had a tone when he sung his low notes.

  • George was just being polite. :)

  • RedCelt is right. George was being polite. As he grew up, his tone changed to be much brighter, and not crystal clear and full like it is here. Chief and Younce in my opinon were the greatest.

  • I aggree. the questions is what determines a good bass singer?. He's range, depth, resonance, ability to master his voice?, these are characteristics I use to determine who is good or so so. George, in my opinion was the best, even thought I believe that Big John Hall has a bigger voice.
