one time I believe I did ray of frost and a magic missile on a guy no crit but in total after he took all his damage by me including ongoing he took 34 hp and I was only level 2
I have been reading some of the comments with interest.
Personally speaking, whereas I respect D&D for being the daddy of all RPGs, I personally find it a bit too combat heavy, and a bit samey, regardless of edition! I prefer games that are more theatrical, less combat heavy.
Considering that there are numerous editions of D&D, as well as Pathfinder, it matters not want edition you play, but whether you enjoy playing it! Rules are rules, roleplay is in the hands of the GM and players.
@Captpub3beard i said that as a joke, and its in the game rules that you have to roll for each consecutive hit, i just overlooked the fact that a nat20 on the first hot would be a 1 hit kill
@Captpub3beard i said it because in my head i pictured of a black guy dressed like a douche thinking he's all "gangsta" explaining that to him. You know, someone who looks like he wouldn't know a thing about DnD. I meant it to be ironic. Also dont go into the whole "racism" argument, unless if there is some sort of racist connotation that is used with it the word in itself is not racist
@Captpub3beard and by that i mean that the nat20 would deal only 72 damage and not the 151 what he was setting all of that up for, plus i didn't know what level they were playing at not did i know how much hp the target had left
Consider it bought...That'll show my DM who not to mess with when I maniacly laugh with my 20! That'll teach him to send out his army of displacer beasts, beholders, skeletons, and one ewok after me!
Did he just makes one attack roll for 2 attacks? Is there some weird feat that lets you roll just once if you use an action point? Or have these guys never played D&D? Was it really THAT hard to find actual D&D players?
@swingtastic He rolled once because he only needed one shot to kill it. There was no second attack. It happens sometimes when you announce your full turn before doing anything and then hit harder than you expected.
...wait...you needd to roll again to confirm the crit. 20 won't automaticllly make it a crit, just a hit. you need to roll again and overcome the target's AC to crit.
@acolytetojippity actually I'm fairly sure that isn't true. If you have enough attack to hit, the attack will crit. If you still dont have enough attack on the 20, the attack will be a regular hit, instead of a crit.
(lvl 30 changeling assassin that steals, scams and kills people).
@Misery1988 no. you roll for the attack. if that roll is within your weap's crit range, then you roll again to confirm the crit. if you beat AC on that roll, then you crit. if you don't, then it's a regular hit.
@acolytetojippity this is what the forth edition players hand book says about rolling a crit. "Natural 20: If you roll a 20 on the die when making an attack roll, you score a critical hit if your total attack roll is high enough to hit your target’s defense. If your attack roll is too low to score a critical hit, you still hit automatically." so there is no second roll, but just because they rolled a 20 doesnt necessarily mean its a crit.
@acolytetojippity ah, well now your assuming im playing 4th. i never said i was, however based off the video, they are. and to be honest no one version is better than the another. all the small minded individuals who have bitched about things changing are clearly not open minded and are stuck and stubborn in their ways (not saying you are, i clearly dont know you). thats not exactly a thing to be proud of. its all based on the DM and the players to make the game fun and worthwhile.
@acolytetojippity i agree that they simplified it, but that doesnt kill the game play. the game play is based on the DM and the players and the simplification speeds up some of the playing, giving more time for each gaming session. i would suggest to at least try it (if you havent already) with a open mind, and then make a decision of what you think of 4th. but i cant stress enough how its not the version that makes a good game or a bad one, but its the DM and players. thats my opinion anyway
@cthulhu189 i honestly have. we were quite excited to try it hen it came out, and an hour into it we burned our char. sheets and started a 3.5 one instead.
@acolytetojippity It shows your lack of experience with the game. Your opinion means nothing you joke of a human. Your nothing but a close minded fool, part of the problem with humanity. I speak the truth.
I totes bought one, it just arrived today. I can honestly say from firsthand experience that it is, in fact, a fair die. Much to my immediate annoyance.
if you all want to to back to 3.5 then try pathfinder..albeit its technically 3.75 but its practically the same...although i was at a disadvantage because i never really gotr to play 3.5 but i tried pathfinder and it takes a bit of time to transition from 4th to 3rd if ur not used to playing the older edition. but with pathfinder u can even roll some new classes like alchemists and such
@thinkgeek You act like it's a bad thing! What I'm saying is Ravenloft is awesome, even if the figures are un-painted! Also, only one dragon? It's Dungeons and Dragons, not Dungeon and Dragon.
@Garenas20295 You're both right. Under 3.5 Edition rules, you have to roll to confirm and multiply the total number of damage dice on a crit. Under 4E, however, natural 20 auto-confirms if your total roll would have hit normally and automatically maxes your damage, plus bonus rolls in certain situations.
@thegreatcerebral the rules are: Before you roll the dice for damage, you roll a d20 to see if you hit or missed. This depends on the enemys defenses in either armor class, reflex, will or fortitude. However, when you roll a 20 it is counted as a critical hit, meaning your attack automaticly deals maximum damage.
@takuto8 not maximum damage, but a critical hit, which can range from double to quadruple damage depending on the attack, or simply an automatic hit regardless of the armor class if the monster is immune to criticals.
