We had a Pre Christmas gig fest which we loved and we had Bryan Adams, Kate Rusby and Kasabian, it was wonderful and we loved Kate Rusby to bits with her christmas special. Brilliant.
What is Songs of Praise? Is it a program or a CD or what? Thanks for clarifying. By the way, this is stuck in my head and even though it is August and soon to be 90 degrees out, I have to keep coming here to listen to this, when i am not listening to the CD in my CD player! :)
Heard this song and the singer today for the first time on radio Devon. Brilliant and what a crazy incredible voice this lady has. Love it cant wait to buy her music!!
Saw Kate Rusby last week and she sang this amongst others, she said they were pub carols traditionally sung in pubs around South Yorkshire, many of which were deemed unfit for church by the Victorians! because they were too frivolous and so sung in pubs instead.
Awwww so lovely. just listened to it on songs of praise too and quickly rushed to search for it here. Guess it will be my christmas hymn this year....
I think this is the Sheffield version of the song from what they said on Songs of Praise--- apparently in that area very different versions of Christmas carols are sung from the traditional tune...
Thanks for that - I'd heard a snippet of what they said, but was distracted from it by conversation from friends. I'd be fascinated to know how old it is, how it evolved, etc. - not least because I used to do English country dance, and it very much has that feel to it. xx
I was sat at home Sunday night flicking thru the channels half watching 6 things at once and dreading going to work next day , when I came across this charming woman and her voice and this beautiful song. this is a bit special - a simple charming moving performance.
Amazing. Saw this on 'Songs of Praise' yesterday and had to find it. Does anyone know the history of the tune? (Not 'While Shepherds', that's easy enough to find, but this particular version)?
Very pleased to find this - many thanks - saw her for the first time at the Brighton Dome 09 during a lovely Christmas show - am now a confirmed Kate fan.
I'm amazed to find this version on Youtube. My mother taught it to me when I was a little girl but I'd never heard it anywhere else. Merry Christmas one and all!
Lovely to hear this again, I remember when I was a lad in West Yorkshire our local Methodist church choir always sung this version. Thanks Kate, brought a tear to my eyes!

Wonderful song! I get tired of all the canned Christmas music you usually hear over and over. This goes on my top 10 Christmas songs list.

Brilliant. So much better than the X Factor rubbish that clogs up the chart at Christmas.

Couldn't agree more. I saw Kate on BBC Breakfast TV yesterday - I wasn't even really paying attention until I heard her sing.
What a beautiful voice and what a charming young woman.
And I thought I didn't like folk singers!
