"christian father experiences cognitive dissonance because of a child's innocent qeustion" thats funny. wonder what convoluted answer he gave to the kid?
Actually the argument it is just a book is not one that I would accept for challenging one's set of beliefs. The argument would be have to be: "It's just a work of fiction," or: "It's not acceptable (anymore) as only source to base your life, your thoughts and your values on." I know I am a bit hair-splitting here because this is basically what the original sentensce is aimed at.
In fact this was one of the arguments that made me challenge my believes and made me end up being an atheist.
Lil story, I was in the corner store & An Earth science chan was on talkn about the earth as it may have been 4billion years ago, The clerk was Completly OutRaged at the T.V. because it went against his Beliefs. This Clerk in all his Wisdom said "It is Imposible for the Earth to be that old" And he "proved it" by saying "They didn't have any Books back then". I left ALOTof Crazy out of this but basicly what I think U & I are saying is That these things are What Logic & truth is up Against.
haha great question. Maybe, just maybe, religion comes into our lives the minute we realize most of our childhood questions are 'unanswerable" (aka not easy to understand/explain) and out of fear we create something to hold onto? I miss that childhood innocence i used to have where every answer i got was just not enough, and was followed by a "WHY", i wish i could have the wonderment of my youth back towards the things that surround me!
I remember asking one of those as a kid, in sunday school. I asked "If Christianity is the one true religion, does that make all the other religions wrong?" It was a RIOT, even back then, watching the teacher try to tell a bunch of kids that other religions weren't wrong, but they really were, but not really.
8: I pray to Spiderman every day. I dont always get what I want but Spiderman answers prayers on a yes/no/wait basis, which is fair. After all, Spiderman works in mysterious ways and he does know what hes doing.
Thats awesome draagon66. I had a vision last night, in which Spiderman visited me and told me that those who deny in his existence and pray to the wicked Batman shall destroy us and our children making us all slaves. The only way for us to avoid hell and reach eternal salvation is to smite the evil batman worshippers and reclaim our holy land once and for all.
7: I woke up one night, it was quite dark. Someone was sitting on my bed. It was Spiderman, who had come to visit ME! Honest! No kidding! I only just stopped from wetting myself with the excitement. Spiderman told me that everything would be fine and that I should go back to sleep, So I did, of course.
6: I attended a Spiderman convention once. There were millions of us there. Spiderman actually appeared before us and signed autographs. A-maz-ing!!! I also met Spidermans appointed prophet, Stanlee. The most wonderful day in my life, ever!
Blessed are those who follow St. Stan the man and the good King Kirby, for at the very least they'll be entertained, which is more than anybody ever got from the bible.
5: When I watch a Spiderman movie, I get excited out of my skin with the delights. My whole body tremors and my head spins. Its as if Spiderman is inside me. Wonderful feeling of happiness and contentment. Yes, Spiderman is real.
Being afraid of questions is an admission that the you are uncertain of your faith. You've either got to buck down and take the hits for Christ -- knowing they're all just pin pricks -- or you should actually attempt to free yourself from your prison of silly superstitions you've been taught since childhood.
Being paralyzed and doing nothing is just cowardly. All independent thinkers would be ashamed of you -- as would Jesus himself.
It find it sad when the inquisitive part of our childhood is killed under the boot of adulthood. Adults are so trained never to ask questions, it's like apart of us dies, we've seen so much heartbreak that we are just too scared to try anymore. It has to be one of the worst crimes of dogma.
Out of the mouths of babes. In order to learn more about the world around them, children do question the inconsistencies they see so that they can refine their mental model. This is why you have to get them young with the god concept - be cause it makes so little rational sense. It looks like this particular christian father may have left things a little too late. Let's hope so.

Actually they are lots of symbols in that movie itself that reminded me of Christ. What this guy lacked was knowledge in who God is.I guess if the Father explained history and such it wouldnt be so difficult.I guess the point of this vid is that not all Christians have knowledge but keep their faith, they are blessed.
oh yeah his answer "thats just make believe" priceless.....

Child abuse. The father was (still is) a victim, and so is his son. The world will only become a better place to the degree that parenting improves.

1: I believe that Spiderman is real.
2: I know for a fact that Spiderman is real. Its true.
3: Ive actually been to New York city and its really there, so Spiderman just HAS to be real.
4: Each time that I open a Spiderman comic, I get a wave of emotion running through my body, as if Spiderman knows that I am appreciating him.

Mohammed, Buddha, and Jesus are all people that existed.
It's the teachings based on what they "supposedly" said that are imaginary.

So... Christ can shoot webs from his wrist? I suppose with enough mental shoe horning one can fit anything into anything else.

Actually when I read the bible there are a lot of symbols that remind me of Horus, Mithra, Dionysus, Ra..........

You seemed to say the child had not accually asked the question. The father was worried he might. Maybe as you implied the father has his doubts.
But yeah a beautiful illistration.
