it's brilliant how unaccented (ii use this meaning he doesn't actively highlight parts of his speech that are funny) his humour is...along with that awesome accent and cool voice too..
and finally, an interviewer who's incisive, interesting yet not pompous...great interview, thanks a lot for uploading this.
Dick Cavett was/is so brilliant. Why did his show end and what is he doing now? What a great interviewer! Completely on top of everything and really listening to the interviewee. Greatness!
Incredible!! Was this filmed in 1979 or 2009 - because everything Mr Cleese talks about, with regards people running round shouting about how offended they are, could be a comment on the here and now....
@cornology I was struck by how relevant the subject was to this generation. Cavett's "so what if you're offended?" line is something Richard Dawkins has said many times too.
@mfnickster He meant the UK cabinet because he said the "Flat Earth Society" was a British thing. But yeah, it could be said for most political bodies.
@someotherself He says "many of them are in The Cabinet", i,e, the British government. That's why Dick says "They'd sail over here to get you if they weren't scared of falling off".
@someotherself he says 'many of them are in the cabinet'. The cabinet is the group of people in England who run it. The Prime Minister and his team, etc.
Cleese said, "Many of them are in the Cabinet." He must have meant the British Cabinet (their executive branch of government) because Cavett responded "If they hear about that, they would sail over here [New York City]."
@someotherself Oh dear I see almost everyone else has allready answered this, whoops. I see they've allready scratched the surface of the issue so I won't pursue it
Well said indeed. People who are offended by things are childish and selfish. Why waste your time being offended by something which is not directed personally at you?
This resonates even truer today. What with hyper sensitive political watchdogs like Al Sharpton going after Don Imus for his "nappy headed hos" joke (a joke taken from a Spike Lee movie, for god's sake!). Nobody should lose their job for exercising their right to free speech.
You are soooo right. I did not realize that that phrase was from one of Spike's movies. If a black guy would have said it nothing would have come of it. Plus Imus was just speaking the truth. Has anyone out there in YouTube land seen those chicks from that team?? Imus spoke the truth, plus check out the tats and the giant size of these "females". Yipes.
Anyway, back to this clip Cavett always had the best guests. And Life of Bryan is one of my fave movies. Thx , dante.
Google "flat earth myth," people. The idea that people EVER believed the earth was flat is a myth.

Dick Cavett was clearly pissed but held it together brilliantly. John Cleese, is a mastermind...absolutely winning the audience over the host.

It's a shame HBO didn't approach the Pythons.
HBO stay true to the art and the comedy.
They aired Extras just as it was and Curb is obviously brilliant.
I know they only formed in 72 so maybe they weren't big enough when the Pythons were.

Can someone tell me what John Cleese says at 7:46, right after Cavett says "there are people on this earth(...) or they are sort of parody group?".

I've always thought he said, "Well many of them are in the Capitol," referring to certain backwards-thinking Congressmen.
