That sounds like it was terrible. I wonder if submarines experience as much turbulance. I wonder what kind of technology they gon on board besides nuclear ICBM's? Please watch my videoes I am not joking i am ready to join the military just to get away from the pigs with the wireless device. I want to push the button that launches the missile that kills these sociopath cowards.
i saw the nimitz back in 77 in norfolk when i was in elementary shcool..she was moored next to the independence..i also remember how huge these monsters are...those waves must have been huge..i feel sorry for her escorting ships they were probably getting the shit beat out of them and their crews
Actually, we do. If you look at the helo up on the bow. It just landed with a 45 knot tailwind (which is why its facing the wrong way).
I've seen water coming over the angled deck before while coming in to land. I've seen a Rhino that was taxiing halfway down Cat 2 get picked up by a wave and pushed back 20 feet. Its definitely not for everyone as this is some crazy stuff.
@mvallin I don't think there is enough room in the hanger for every plane and helo. I'm sure they crammed it as full as they could but as big as a carrier is, there's only so much room.....
I did 12 yrs in the navy and was onboard the "ike" CVN69 when we took a "rouge wave" over deckedge elevator2, lost three men over the side that night and almost 50 skids of weapons.we got two men back, but we lost a good friend and fellow "ORDIE" that night. RIP Aviation Ordanceman Craig Harris. October 31st 1989.
Wow! Makes some of the seas I saw on the Carl Vinson back in the 90's seem tame. We hit a wave so hard once we damaged the platform on the port bow which mounts a CIWS. It actually broke beams and cracked the side of the ship so that water was coming in every time we crashed down into a wave.
@pettyofficer30 Yeah, i remember walking towards the pier and seeing the big dent in the ship when we were in Bremerton. I was a Damage Controlman and even though it was sometime late in the night, the ship shook so damn hard that we all got up and started heading for the nearest repair locker just in case. The compartment taking water happened to be an avionics shop IIRC. LOTS of expensive stuff got salt water all over it. Good times..... LOL!
aircraft carriers don't have enough room on hanger deck to store all aircraft. This is the way it has been with US carriers since the 30's. Look at the pics and film from WW2, the planes are on deck. Repairs are usually made on hanger deck. But its shocking that a super carrier gets tossed around like this !
I's too late now, moving that aircraft would be dangerous to crew involved, and would give it a greater chance of damage. Might as well leave her there tied down.
Flight ops are off. why arent the multi million dollar aircraft bellow decks? both aircraft could have been secured at the rear of deck at least if not bellow.
About every four years, carrier aircraft are stripped and completely overhauled at the NARF (Naval Air Rework Facility). Carrier aircraft endure hardships others don't including landings and takeoffs.
I've seen photographs of seas coming over the bow -- and riding up towards the island -- on Essex class refits during the mid-1960s. (South China Sea.) Would not have expected such activity on a "big" deck. Of course, all things are relative: Essex class ships are over 900 feet long in their own right!
Jesus fucking christ! If water is going over the bow of a friggin aircraft carrier, I don't even want to speculate how big those waves are. Any other size ship would likely perish in those waters.
I received this same video today at work. The words that came with indicate this is the Kitty Hawk. The helo landed as they were coming on heavy seas. They had no time to take her below.
1. why is HELO out on end of deck?2.why are any aircraft up on the deck getting a nice salt water bath?.not enough space below for all the fleet?what type of anti corrosive paint do they use on the planes? last fighter planes used to have cool art work on them from the old p51 mustangs to sabres in koria and even a little tale work on the cold war f 14,s.can the colors effect radar signiture?i know that they use radar absorbent paint.please questions for navy or airforce pilots or techs thanks
The aircraft elevators cannot be run above sea state 3. This is beyond sea state 5. If they even opened the El doors, the hangar bay would be flushed out. Better to risk losing one plane than the whole ship.
now why the hell they left that helo that far forward is amazing..the mechs are gonna hate havin to clean that bird up..i've seen seas like this on my first ship, CVN 74 USS Stennis, in the south china seas...but when we first got into them, they still had F-18's parked all the way up to the bow...didn't take em long to move em all back LOL
salt water is the enemy of all metals and it gets into everything i was never on an carrier but i helped my father at his job since i was young fixing s.e.l. and multi engine aircraft on long island right next to the water at mattituck airport.I can tell you one thing it must be hell trying to keep those plains running at peak condition they have to have everything coated with anti corrosive paint and seal everything that is exposed.we had to always check for anything just living at sea level.

@TheVidsforfree Yeah, I saw the seahawk. I think they have it tied down or something so something don't happen to it.

neophyte777 1 year ago
@lejink the navy's aircraft are built to handle the high salt/water enviroment.
BudgetTactical 1 year ago
@lejink that's why navy jets are build better and tougher than air force ones. The life span is probably half of an air force jet.

@lejink That's why they do routine cleaning of them.

I don't think it really matters to the carrier scince the carrier's deck is flat, the sea water can easily slip of the deck!!! =]

There is a thing called heavy weather tie down which uses 18 chains. that is what is being used here.
cdh9439 3 years ago
Not so amazing. During rough seas its routine to double (or even triple) the tie-down chains holding aircraft to the pad-eyes in the flight deck.
-- the Flight Deck is AB Country.
