I don't agree with a women getting slapped, nor men getting slapped either...but different era's certainly had stereotypes. Traditional Japanese customs like this style exist, of course the younger generation will always evolve (at least some of them).
The 70's, yeah, another child of the 70's...I must say "That 70's Show" did a pretty fair take on life in that era... I was not really ready when DISCO hit in the late 70's...Bob Seger and I "Love that Old Time Rock N' Roll"!
For all you feminists out there, what's wrong with being feminine? You sound as if you are ashamed to show appreciation for the opposite sex, while expecting the man to love and worship you all the time...Come on, people, just think about it....
I saw Bill Bixby interviewed on the Mike Douglas show years back, and Bixby told this strange story: there was a scene in which Eddie's father has a father-son chat with Eddie (Brandon Cruz), after he (Bixby) stepped out of the shower. To make it seem more natural and realistic, Bixby said, he really stepped out nude, and was shot from the waist up. No, I'm not making this up. What is especially odd isn't just this unnecessary Method Acting, but that he told Douglas, who had a big audience.
So many people here seem to misunderstand Japanese culture and so completely miss the point of this episode. (ha ha, mistake at :52 he calls her Jody instead of Joey.)
I dated a Japanese girl. They are nice and pretty and serve their men...very traditional.. but after she moved in she used to send me back to work if I got home before 6pm.
I used to watch this as a little girl, but as an adult woman now this is disgusting!!
The lady and the girl standing there as the man and boy eat. Then Eddie say's, "You can take my plate now, I'm finished." What the hell? He could get up and take that plate to the kitchen himself! And, "You're the woman, you're supposed to give it to me." I cringe! Hear that Keith? I CRINGE!
it's hard to believe we watched this -- after all women finally got some rights when it came to working and pay when I was in the 7th grade we were finally allowed to wear pants -- no longer did we have to go to school wearing a dress or skirt -- civil rights for women was a long time coming as the same went for being able to own property and the right to vote -- here's here to women's right! We even have the right to chose who we want to love if it's a women then so be it!
From the outside, it may appear Japanese wives are subservient. But the truth is, the wife rules. She chooses almost everything, from what food will be eaten to how much allowance the husband will receive. In Japanese culture, when a husband goes to work he is "subservient" to his boss and customers. And when he returns home, this is just a simple way she tries to show her appreciation. But I can understand how many feel becuz how in European and U.S history men have treated women.

has anyone noticed that jody foster is dressed like the charmin chatty talking doll by mattel. they have a video of the doll on youtube, go look, it even kinda looks like her.
I always thoght Jody Fosters looked kinda boyish as a child, her voice was not girly at all, and she walked like a boy.... no surprise that she's a lesbian, more proof being gay is hormonal/genetic!
The moral of the story is that boys should not hit girls, and that girls have no business hitting boys. Girls that do that don't expect boys to hit them back. Well I say she got what she deserved. Jodie was sooo cute. She is a fan fav.
My 30 year old daughter had a cow when I showed her this episode. She just about covered up her 6 year old son's eyes at the sight of this over-the-top sexism. Instead they decide she can't fight because she's a GIRL, and ask Mrs. Livingston to teach her how to be a proper subservient female, Japanese style! Yuck! If you want to read a "very" interesting book about JODIE FOSTER pick up the paperback titled "Foster Child" written by he actor brother "Buddy Foster". I was surprised how it kept my attention and it was a real easy read. You can find it on Ebay for a few bucks.
One of the FEW child actors who made the transition from childhood to adulthood- I don't recall reading (or hearing) anything about Jodie getting arrested or blowing coke up her nose or anything stupid. She evidentially was raised well.
Thats right Eddie......once you finally slaped your bitch into line....she calms right down.....a time tested method for keeping da bitch on the straight and narrow
This scene was based on how Japanese women treat their men. In no way is it meant to be sexist, or to degrade women. It's simply showing a different culture's customs. I thing you have some pretty inaccurate notions of what it means to be
I don't think the show itself was necessarily being sexist. I think the show was discussing women's liberation at a time when it was only beginning to be discussed on TV. Regardless of the views of individual characters in the script it was written in '72(?) and was, maybe, gently pointing out the obsurdity of the custom. I don't know if you're old enough to remember, but he "battle of the sexes" became popular tv fodder by the late 70s.
Wow, some thread. None of the other "Eddie's Fathers" attracted this kind of violence.
I don't think the point was that women should live to serve men. Apprenticing a little girl with no feminine models to Mrs. Livingstone was genius. There's nothing as proudly feminine as a classically-trained Japanese lady.
You'll note that Jodie isn't "converted," and that's OK. She stays tough, but has options. And she learns that a fistfight isn't always effective, either.
How frightening to watch this episode and to realize that I'm just Two years younger than Jodie...is this what our lives would have amounted to? ...I used to hate women's lib, but now I'm not so sure....
oh yet another comment i missed , wow makes me wonder how you picked u on watching courtship of eddies father, i dont get it.....maybe you just came from some bad home, if thats true im sorry...
Yeah..thank God feminism came along and ruined the family structure...created unemployment for millions of men trying to support their families...and left latchkey kids wandering the streets with no parental supervision...of course ..HELL YEAH..I was all for bra burning..who ever invented bras should be shot.
Obviously, you are a member of the middle class. Working class women have had to work outside the home LONG before feminism came along. And when feminism DID come along, it has been pretty much restricted to middle class women. My mom, her mom, all my female relatives had to work either in the fields or in factories before feminism. Funny, the family structure is fine as long as it is only THOSE lower class women who have to leave their children in the care of others.
But, God forbid, middle class women should enter the workforce, THEN the "family structure" is in danger. Maybe it is high time the "middle classes" got a taste of how it feels to have to sacrifice their families for the sake of that great God the "free" market.
And what about all those women who have been DUMPED by their husbands (often for much younger women) who are forced to support themselve AND their families. The highest poverty rate is among single mothers. Where are the fathers -- who, by the way, are still paid higher wages for doing the SAME work as a woman. You are obviously a reactionary Neanderthal. And not very well informed.
I still remember watching this show. Where have the years flown? They had such enjoyable innocent tv shows on back then, even though the hippies were all trying to make us feel terrible about Vietnam.
This scene was taken out of context. It had to do with not being selfish and me me me all the time. This show was very progressive with regards to women's rights.
your a moron, with a very small penis that;s why your view is so small, and being white has NOTHING to do with it....please crawl in a corner and just go away !!!!!! thankyou :)
This was such a great show. Although the message of teaching females to serve their men is kinda dated. Remember the one with the Astronaut Gordon Cooper? Thanks for posting this!
Jodie Foster has had a heck of a career... I thought the first thing she did was an episode or the original Kung Fu series decades ago... guess this predates that.
Her episode of Kung Fu is one of my favorites. She honestly mis-perceives Caine as having shot a man. Of course, he forgives her for her error. A great theme on subjectivity of point of view.
He accidentally called McGee "John" instead of "Jack". Banner had then become "John Doe" due to a head injury. They left it like that. In "The Magician", he called his assistant sometimes Connie and sometimes Kathy so I guess this was one of his quirks. I've never heard him call his Uncle "Ray" tho.
jodie, indecently young here, too young for tv, hollywood, etc., didn't learn anything from the concept of this sequence, except maybe how to mistrust and fear men more than she already did. young brains already squirm with the germs of their eventual, fully-exploded, maladies. listen to her voice, that of a 45-year-old crack whore. i spent a lifetime learning japanese and can't speak or write a word; i was really english from the word 'go'. there's no going back from being english. jodie...
Oh Boy does this bring back memories... 47 now and probably a kid of 9 or ten then but again... memories. I believe this was an ABC show and boy, that is a young Jodie Foster here.. I rmbr all of these shows like it was yesterday! Wasn't their housekeeper called Mrs. Livingston?
Oh man!!! a simpler time... I love this and thanx for the upload!! Now I HAVE to find the theme song from this... I rmbr.. "Pride and Joy"
The beautiful housekeeper was the leading actress from the classic movie "The Flower Drum Song." Terrific. Remember the song in the movie "Chop Suey"?
I don't care whether she was gay or not, but WHAT is "Good Life TV"? Is this some "faith-based" syndicated network bullshit? When this show aired, half of california were living in hippie communes! You can't claim this program for your Jesus cult!
people, all you see gay in this episode, I see the best comment yet was "YOUR THE WOMAN,& YOUR SUPOSED TO GIVE IT TO ME"!! besides Jodie could kick all of our asses at once!! she was butch then but now she kina hot!!
She was pretty butch on the Partridge Family too. So perhaps she didn't lean that way as a choice, since it has already been proven there is a genetic link to homosexuality.
Don't "huh" like you don't understand. Homosexuals are not born, they are made. She was probably molested as a child or more likely, turned gay by a bunch of bull dikes at Yale.
Nookiecat, that was the dumbest statement ever. How can someone, or a situation or event, turn you gay? Does that mean if your priest touched you as a child, you'd be gay too? I've known a lot of gay people whocame from normal, loving families. I love that people think that gays "choose" to be that way, cause wouldn't we all choose a lifestyle that will get us ostracized and hated by society, not to mention how much God would hate and condemn us. And I'm not gay, but I don't fear them either.
People from good families don't choose to be alcoholics, drug addicts or mentally ill either. Homosexuality is a deep mental disorder and the American psychiatric association always classified it as such until they were politically pressured to change their policy in the early 70's after militant homosexuals crashed the convention and rioted. If you think homosexuality is normal, just read a few Craigslist m4m personals and see for yourself just how sick and twisted these folks are.
I don't agree with a women getting slapped, nor men getting slapped either...but different era's certainly had stereotypes. Traditional Japanese customs like this style exist, of course the younger generation will always evolve (at least some of them).

If you want to read a "very" interesting book about JODIE FOSTER pick up the paperback titled "Foster Child" written by he actor brother "Buddy Foster". I was surprised how it kept my attention and it was a real easy read. You can find it on Ebay for a few bucks.
inkey2 2 years ago
One of the FEW child actors who made the transition from childhood to adulthood- I don't recall reading (or hearing) anything about Jodie getting arrested or blowing coke up her nose or anything stupid. She evidentially was raised well.
rayjr62 2 years ago 3
Foster was busted for coke possession during the winter of '83-'84.

This clip just shows you just HOW FAR the leftist disease has taken us since the 70's!!!
If this was on a TV show today, the left would have a kaniption FIT!!!!!!!!!!!! The ACLU might even consider court action!!! LOL!
sirjames45 2 years ago
No they wouldn't.
This scene was based on how Japanese women treat their men. In no way is it meant to be sexist, or to degrade women. It's simply showing a different culture's customs. I thing you have some pretty inaccurate notions of what it means to be
"left-wing". No more FOX News for you!

It IS sexist!
If one sex has the role as servant and the other has the role as served, that IS SEXIST! That exactly is the definition.
One sex has one role/ house/ dress/ etc, and the other sex has a different role/ dress/ house/ etc, that is what sexism is.
Not using it as a derogatory term, which incidentally, it is not, but as a definition of a social description.
Get it?
sarahshevett 2 years ago
I don't think the show itself was necessarily being sexist. I think the show was discussing women's liberation at a time when it was only beginning to be discussed on TV. Regardless of the views of individual characters in the script it was written in '72(?) and was, maybe, gently pointing out the obsurdity of the custom. I don't know if you're old enough to remember, but he "battle of the sexes" became popular tv fodder by the late 70s.
InsertName125 2 years ago
Wow, some thread. None of the other "Eddie's Fathers" attracted this kind of violence.
I don't think the point was that women should live to serve men. Apprenticing a little girl with no feminine models to Mrs. Livingstone was genius. There's nothing as proudly feminine as a classically-trained Japanese lady.
You'll note that Jodie isn't "converted," and that's OK. She stays tough, but has options. And she learns that a fistfight isn't always effective, either.
I'd sign my daughter up.

How frightening to watch this episode and to realize that I'm just Two years younger than Jodie...is this what our lives would have amounted to? ...I used to hate women's lib, but now I'm not so sure....

How repugnant! Thank God feminism came along. "It is a joy to serve the man."
asy4 3 years ago
Yeah..thank God feminism came along and ruined the family structure...created unemployment for millions of men trying to support their families...and left latchkey kids wandering the streets with no parental supervision...of course ..HELL YEAH..I was all for bra burning..who ever invented bras should be shot.
deerhunter45628 2 years ago 2
Obviously, you are a member of the middle class. Working class women have had to work outside the home LONG before feminism came along. And when feminism DID come along, it has been pretty much restricted to middle class women. My mom, her mom, all my female relatives had to work either in the fields or in factories before feminism. Funny, the family structure is fine as long as it is only THOSE lower class women who have to leave their children in the care of others.
asy4 2 years ago
But, God forbid, middle class women should enter the workforce, THEN the "family structure" is in danger. Maybe it is high time the "middle classes" got a taste of how it feels to have to sacrifice their families for the sake of that great God the "free" market.
asy4 2 years ago
It takes away job that men once held to support families.
deerhunter45628 2 years ago
And what about all those women who have been DUMPED by their husbands (often for much younger women) who are forced to support themselve AND their families. The highest poverty rate is among single mothers. Where are the fathers -- who, by the way, are still paid higher wages for doing the SAME work as a woman. You are obviously a reactionary Neanderthal. And not very well informed.

This scene was taken out of context. It had to do with not being selfish and me me me all the time. This show was very progressive with regards to women's rights.

Jodie Foster has had a heck of a career... I thought the first thing she did was an episode or the original Kung Fu series decades ago... guess this predates that.
switcherdawna 3 years ago
Her episode of Kung Fu is one of my favorites. She honestly mis-perceives Caine as having shot a man. Of course, he forgives her for her error. A great theme on subjectivity of point of view.

Mrs. Livingston was wasting her breath with that little diesel dyke.
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
Notice Bill Bixby's error at :52. Her character's name was "Joey" and he called her "Jodie." I wonder if he ever accidentally called Eddie "Brandon."
IDLERACER 3 years ago
He accidentally called McGee "John" instead of "Jack". Banner had then become "John Doe" due to a head injury. They left it like that. In "The Magician", he called his assistant sometimes Connie and sometimes Kathy so I guess this was one of his quirks. I've never heard him call his Uncle "Ray" tho.

jodie, indecently young here, too young for tv, hollywood, etc., didn't learn anything from the concept of this sequence, except maybe how to mistrust and fear men more than she already did. young brains already squirm with the germs of their eventual, fully-exploded, maladies. listen to her voice, that of a 45-year-old crack whore. i spent a lifetime learning japanese and can't speak or write a word; i was really english from the word 'go'. there's no going back from being english. jodie...

She was pretty butch on the Partridge Family too. So perhaps she didn't lean that way as a choice, since it has already been proven there is a genetic link to homosexuality.

Nookiecat 3 years ago
Huh??? "Someone" turned her into a homosexual?
salsoul76 3 years ago
Don't "huh" like you don't understand. Homosexuals are not born, they are made. She was probably molested as a child or more likely, turned gay by a bunch of bull dikes at Yale.
Nookiecat 3 years ago
Nookiecat, that was the dumbest statement ever. How can someone, or a situation or event, turn you gay? Does that mean if your priest touched you as a child, you'd be gay too? I've known a lot of gay people whocame from normal, loving families. I love that people think that gays "choose" to be that way, cause wouldn't we all choose a lifestyle that will get us ostracized and hated by society, not to mention how much God would hate and condemn us. And I'm not gay, but I don't fear them either.
boowitz 3 years ago 2
People from good families don't choose to be alcoholics, drug addicts or mentally ill either. Homosexuality is a deep mental disorder and the American psychiatric association always classified it as such until they were politically pressured to change their policy in the early 70's after militant homosexuals crashed the convention and rioted. If you think homosexuality is normal, just read a few Craigslist m4m personals and see for yourself just how sick and twisted these folks are.
Nookiecat 3 years ago
Why are you Reading the Craigslist m4m ads?
