@eaglecoug I have another one for you: Connie Selleca from The Greatest American Hero. I'm 38 in 2011 so you're probably my age give or take. Anyway, I was watching the GA Hero theme for the MUSIC (honestly), and not only remember how hot Connie Selleca was, but how much my fiance looks like her when she has her hair tied up! Thing is, she's 30, from Brazil, and had no idea about GA Hero or Silver Spoons when she was a girl!
at least there was still an air of innocence among kids back then, this world is so sadistic and kids are exposed to so much, you have to protect them from all elements all of the time.
YO! Did you see SPEEEEEEEEEEEED with which that girl answered his request?!
These days, at 14, even with Chasebook and all that jazz, you NEVER get such a response without consequences, son! Ah, the early days of internetting and 80s niavete; PRICELESS!
So CHATTING was previously called GROKKING...sounds much better...Lemme text my ex to grok in facebook now, so that she may like to see my crok again,,,,,LMAO
excessive, obnoxious laugh tracks always bugged me and still do. I saw The Champ in movie theatres at that time and developed such a crush on him (we are 1 yr apart) that despite the laugh tracks and corniness, would watch every episode of this show. And back then, Alfonso was still referred to as *that Thriller kid* :) I was never on Grok but I still have an AOL for DOS 3.5 disk. :x
Not really. Unemployment was at 10% in 83', Reagan could have gotten us into a nuclear war with Russia, there were proxy wars in Afghanistan and central America, little was known about AIDS and there were no medications as there are today, the crime rate was at an all-time high because of the crack epidemic...I could go on.
Things are only worse now because there has been 25 more years for us to destroy the environment and cause more extinction of other species.
Yeah, Rick's friend is the one and only "Carlton" of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" fame. Watching this just shows you what good acting Alfonso did on "Fresh Prince". In this clip, he's talking in his natural voice (before puberty, mind you) - with his natural New York accent. On "Fresh Prince", he spoke with a very good "Uptight L.A. Prep School Nerd" accent. It was great, lol.
Rick Schroder was really fantastic in this series. I used to love it because I was the same age and I really connected with his character. You don't see a lot of kids this age that can really carry a comedy series and be the star. Usually kid actors just play 'the kids' and show up once and a while with a funny line. Schroder deserves a lot of credit.
I'm all for calling guys out on their issues but Ricky's stepmom CANNOT act like women don't care what guys look like. She knows that we all look at their hair, build, teeth, and under their fingernails (so that we know if we should sanitize our hands after shaking theirs) lol.
There's a LOT of young kids on here that don't remember bulletin board systems! Oh, does that make me feel old... Well, all you under 30 people, before the world wide web, there was a bulletin board system that worked like chatrooms, as shown by the show... Oh, I can't believe I'm having to teach kids about the 1980's!!! The irony of it all is that back in the 1980's the "oldsters" used to tell me about the 1960's!
@pika62221 yeah i remember in "Pretty in Pink" ('85 flick), where Molly Ringwald's character was chatting on a computer in the library...and yes computers then were expensivo!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yea thats right..still they was danger then too and if they only could've seen in the future 25 years later then....still then no one should've met no one they didnt know...silver spoons on that episode was wrong and i think it should be removed from youtube here cause of kids watching this these days...
Wow-that's a bold statement! I think there are worst things we should worry about kids watching on youtube than Silver Spoons-like all the trashy porn spam! Besides, most kids are too young to even know that this show even exists. I think most of the people who really watch these old episodes (if you will notice by people who have commented here) are adults. Why take away from us?
Hey, I noticed that Silver Spoons Season 1 is available on DVD now but I was wondering if episode 27 entitled "Mr. President" was on the 1st season. I am thinking it may have been in season 2. Does anyone know ?
Wow i remeber this episode, he had the internet! Way before the internet was common, you had to be super rich to have the net , let alone know what it was.
this is very enlightening... i'm going to yahoo that term 'grocking' to see what if that is still used today... i'm trying to find myself here in cyberspace, see what i really am...
grocking??? please tell me they didn't say that. although, being the 80's i'd believe it. i was only 5 when this episode was made. i didn't even know they had chatting on a computer back then. i saw an earlier episode from 1982 where he's talking about computers being the wave of the future and that one day we'd do our shopping on them. nice prediction. considering where technology was at that time, it's amazing they thought of being able to shop on a computer in the future.
I never heard that term used once. Only very few people chatted I'm sure and they all were that rich I'd bet. But other than computers it was all better back then. It's mostly now that you have dumb terms, shows, music etc.
yah, i got the season 1 dvd set and saw that episode you're talking about ...when Ricky said all that about banking and shopping on computers, it was rather spooky watching it in 2009. didn't think they would have predicted that in the early 80s.
BBS was the simpler version of the "Internet"....way before Youtube or any of Dell software came into effect. It was actually much faster to use, too.
This is actually the BBS (Bulletin Board System). You could call this the "internet" of the 80s. I remember dialing into different BBS across our city. It was actually pretty fast because there were no graphics, if there were, it was really simple. It was really cool.
This show was a little ahead of its times. The classic example is when the Ricker and his friends are watching porn by using some controlled channel in the living room to make it access without the parental mode.
Those movies were great, and classic. But in all honesty, had movies like 300, Lord Of The Rings, Kill Bill, Sin City, and Spiderman come out back then... people would have been astonished. Yes, we have superior technology now, but our TV and music is worse today than it was back then. Only movies are doing their job.
I agree with you. We have way superior technology today but todays tv shows are horrible & the music is way way worse....HORRIBLE. To be honest i haven't watched a television show in years. Bring back good ol' shows like the Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, The Fall Guy, Dallas etc.......& the list goes on & on. We were also very poor back in the '80s so i didn't get to enjoy the cool toys alot of kids enjoyed back then like the Transformers etc...but now i can a little.
Cheesy? Are you guys kidding me? People in real-life are cheesy too, just in a different way. Unlike today's tv shows, which are fake and cheesy in their own way... at least this show was fun and funny. The 80's was the pinnacle of entertanment on television and music. Only movies have actually gotten better, and that was only in this decade. Stop trying to be cool, that makes you uncool.
Geez the 80s was soo innocent. Meeting up with a stranger you met online definitely wasn't what it's like nowadays. Edward and Kate were actually persuading lil Rick to go meet up with a stranger without having any negative thoughts whatsoever...
It's funny to see the innocence of talking to strangers on the internet at this time. The father actually encourages ricky to talk to a random girl he "grocks" with! I guess child predators didn't exist yet.

Edward and Kate were actually persuading lil Rick to go meet up with a stranger without having any negative thoughts whatsoever...

agreed, ritchit. Amazing, to think that this cheesy show probably handled internet dating before any other, and I am guessing this is from 1985?

I recall a Three's Company episode where Jack tried 'computer dating'. The episode was circa 1982, IIRC.

It's funny to see the innocence of talking to strangers on the internet at this time. The father actually encourages ricky to talk to a random girl he "grocks" with! I guess child predators didn't exist yet.

The first season DVD was released Tuesday (the 19th). It needs to sell well though in order for Sony to release further seasons.
