If you listen to Holland-Dozier-Holland interviews they clearly stated that for some reason it was Florence and her voice that guided Diana and her voice; it seemed as if Flo provided Diana with a comfort zone; Diana's best days throughout her career were with Flo behind her; as for Cindy, on all songs she sang on TCB you can clearly hear her, Cindy was fantastic, coming from Patty and the Bluebells you know she was talented sadly & I love Mary, Mary was always the weakest link of the Supremes
Okay...this is one of the BEST.....the BEST Performances that I have ever seen of Miss Ross (Diana Ross) the Boss. I also love this white, pearl, and rhinestone gown...which Mary, Cindy, and Diana wore for their Queen and Royal Court performance in 1968. Love this song now and what a great spoken word to Dr. King as well. Great Performance Diana Ross and thank you for posting this.
The best part of this performance was the narration. DR wasn't at her best vocally. There were a few hi-notes that she almost didn't get. And the delivery was sluggish and mechanical. Don't throw stones at me just yet. DR was a great vocalist. She was below her best here.
@trent8002003 I agree. The whole TCB program, she seems tired and overworked. Because she was. Her voice is hoarse and strained. Also, her eyes looked tired with bags under them. You can especially see that in the hits medley they do at the end. She looks like she could collapse from exhaustion any minute.
For such an important live show, I would think she would have been able to rest up, but I suppose thats the nature of the business. Work work work.
Is it me, or do i hear Florence in the background singing. I know Flo was gone by this time but it really sounds like Florence! This sounds like a prerecorded tape background. HMMMMMMM!!!!!
Since 'some' of TCB was sung live, I would conclude that it is Cindy and Mary off stage or pre-recorded. If it was pre recorded, it was done at the same session they did the other pre-recorded songs like TCB and the Eleanor Rigby, Do You Know The Way To San Jose, etc...
I want to say there's no Florence singing, but who can say?
@Eddieb715 It's definitely not Flo - I can hear Mary & Cindy clearly. I love this clip so much: Afro Vogue segues into Ross, dripping in jewels singing Somewhere while quoting Dr King........ the most powerful statement for the Black cause on TV I can recall. Brilliantly concieved and performed............ it doesn't get any better than this!
Someone did a magnificent job with the camera angles and the "Floating" feel of the camera. But the Supremes always had the best stylings and given star treatmewnt. They knew how to handle it. and to make it part of theri appeal .
Thanx for posting this!! I had seen clips of this show here and there but had never seen the performances in their entirety and had ALWAYS wanted to. It was even BETTER than I expected!!! Diana was AMAZING....
@TheCounslor They are off camera. As much as I did enjoy it, to me, the TCB and GIT programs were essentially Diana Ross (and others). There's alot of Diane alone in TCB. Including an African dancing sequence. There's alot more solo Diane in GIT on Broadway. It's not suprising, since she was preparing for her solo career that officially took place in January 1970. TCB - 1968, GIT on Broadway - 1969.
@TheCounslor , by this time, everyone and the public new she was leaving The Supremes, so Berry in efforts to catapult her stardom more, had no problem featuring her in solo spots on the TV specials at the time
this was back in the days when she was interested in being considered a real singer. it's funny how the narrative has changed over the yrs. today she does a big Karaoke show.
Thanks for posting these great clips down memory lane. Saw Diana Ross last Sunday in St Louis. She STILL got IT. Sorry FLO got lost on the ride to success. May she rest in PEACE. This was a GREAT group.
This iconic, ground breaking television special, "T.C.B." should be re-broadcast on PBS like some of the old Streisand specials have of late. Paul Williams' chilling take on "For Once in My Life" along with this one, "Somewhere" are two of the many show stopping moments of this wonderful special.
it sounds like it's mary and flo on the background and it sounds really similar to the instrumental from their performence back then at the hollywood palace but I'm sure the instrumental was not playback...
Watching Supremes clips from the same time period but different shows gives some similarities. They used the same arrangements for their live performances from the early days with Florence all the way through 1970 with Cindy. I am confident that it's Mary and Cindy singing background in the same manner as Mary and Florence did on the Hollywood Palace show.
@usspike Yes, it is Mary and Cindy doing the harmony vocals. I don't like this version because there was a part in the original version where Mary and Florence sing the verse, and Diana steps back, then chimes in on the chorus.
