I was Vi in my school show Footloose, but they cut this song out of it, me and the girl who played Ethel were upset that we wouldn't get to sing it :/
@moonlightshadow1122 No, I'm dead serious. It seems so out of place. Serious song about female subjugation...and then mimes...? When I first hear this song, the production had altered the line to "keep pretending it's fine", and I thought the number was very strong. Then I heard the CD and actually laughed out loud when they got to the real lyric.
I don't think the original broadway cast is that great :/ I'm doing this show at the moment and the girls who sing this have much better voices and so much more emotion!
@RACHELSARAHFLYNN I'm doing this show as well. and we hear this version all the time & we hate the people's voices --Ren ain''t that bad though-- but I'd rather hear my friends wail, than this. haha. still need to learn the words though haha.

"I'm becoming a mime." Probably the WORST lyric in the history of musical theatre.

*NOTE* In April of 2005, the show was revised slightly. During "Learning to be Silent" Ariel sings with Vi and Ethel during the song.
