i remember when i was in afghanistan it was impolite to look at the elders directly in the eyes while speaking to them or walking ahead of them while you were walking and i understand that. i respect that but now that i am in canada i dont expect my elders to expect that of me. customs are different in every society.

Sadly it all comes as ignorance about how to sit in front of elders, learned or saints/priests , etc . Although they have respect and admiration, it's only through ignorance that they sit in this manner. Many feel they are something....rich, higher status....
