@VegasSantamarina I shot it in 4x3 originally. I used to shoot knowing I would crop the top and the bottom of the video a bit to give it a more wide screen look without actually being wide screen. I exported a uncompressed Quicktime video of it and took it into After Effects and blew it up with a plugin called InstantHD. I think the version I ended with was 1280x720.
@VegasSantamarina No, I am not a fan of Apple. Final Cut Pro is nice, but I dislike the company and their overpriced products. I edited this in Sony Vegas on a custom PC I made 5 years ago.
@77293Animegirl I don't think it was deadly but after a few hours of being around it I did get a headache. Smelled pretty foul too. I am sure it isn't good to inhale for extended periods of time.
@MajorRocker1974 Yeah I found out about it recently. I was living in NJ about 3 hours away. It is totally worth the trip to check it out. Just don't go if you have asthma...
Beautiful videography. When my husband was in high school this section of 61 was still open- he loved driving on it, because the "dip" in the road that couldn't be fixed no matter how many times PennDOT filled it in. It was quite the "stomach dropper".
I really like your video, the music is a very nice touch. The videography is 'gentle' for lack of a better word, thos that still live there would appreciate it.
LOL! I searched the camera on Amazon and looking at the price... no wonder your quality is so awesome. One day I will be able to get a video camera like this.
@Roushfan5 True, but having a race car doesn't make you a race car driver. If you practice hard enough you will be able to harness the power of the car. The more you use a camera the better you can manipulate it and it's footage. I honestly can't even remember editing this video though.
@stevenbogda I would agree with that, a skilled editor/operator can make an awesome looking movie with nothing more then and iPod Touch, however you are never going to match a 300 dollar MP3 player/phone cam. with a thousands of dollar movie studio cam.
okay...I got a question. Coal fires are perfectly natural, right? Just like tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, etc. They are not man made, right? It's just where coal has gathered up right beneath the surface of the earth and ignites a fire. This is what confused me about Silent Hill. In Silent Hill, they burn the little girl for being born of a mom out of wedlock. During the ceremony, something happens and everything catches fire. Did they even know they were living on coal fires?
@7239763 Silent Hill is an old video game. They made a movie based off of the game like 5 years ago. The director of the movie was influenced by Centralia, PA when creating the setting for the movie. The movie's main plot takes place in an abandoned ghost town where mine fires burn underground causing ash to constantly snow down. There are also zombies in the movie...but not in Pennsylvania.
@stevenbogda actually, They arent zombies. Its 'the Darkness' Which is The pain,Anger, Sadness, And suffering of humanity manifested into These Punishers. These Creatures are the punishers of the human race. They only punish those who have caused a sin(s) in their lives. The darkness punishes them, Death is the result of this. well im not sure if that makes any sense, But thats what i've come to understand of The Silent Hill Series
@7239763 it was a town that has a mine fire from the 1960s from 1969 everyone had to evacuate from the town during the fire it wouldn't go out it will keep on going till there will be no more coal left
@MrSpazz08 I really am not sure. I have been there 2 times. Both times I parked on the main highway right next to the blockade that closed off the destroyed highway. I never had a problem. I doubt anyone cares what you do as long as you are not vandalizing things.
lol there's so much silent hill graffiti. if i go there i want to find a wall, put some newspaper on it and paint "there was a hole here. it's gone now"
That was a great video the way it was done. Great angles, filming, and music to match. Sad about the town though. The next time I am out in Central PA I might have to check this place out, it is only 25miles from where my father lives.
Real nice job. I just moved to central PA, I remember hearing about Centralia but I never realized until today that I'm less than 50 miles from it now. Can't wait 'til spring. I'm there first chance I get! Again, real nice job on the vid.
In my opinion, this video was pretty sick. I've never been but I have done my research on this place. The music actually set a mood, at least for me. I don't particularly listen to that genre but it gave it somewhat of a happy-creepy kinda sound. Fuck keyboard warriors. Good job man.
Was there yesterday. It's barren and the only hint of a town is 4 houses, lots of sidewalks to nowhere and the abandoned highway is probably the coolest part. Nonetheless, this place is truly haunting. P.S. this video looks great. dont listen to the keyboard warriors.
@pockmarkedbuttocks I am sorry, but this was not supposed to be a dark, moody or serious video. I was not planning to have the stereotypical idiot YouTube user view it and call it, "gay ass" either.
@pockmarkedbuttocks The camera I shot this with records SD video to tape, not HD. If you would like, message me a link to one of the awesome videos you have shot and uploaded to share. I would really like to learn more about choosing the right music for a video containing random shots from a random town in Pennsylvania uploaded to show random people what happens when an underground coal mine catches fire. I look forward to your knowledge and input.
@pockmarkedbuttocks Thank you for your comment, but I am confused as to why you are calling me a punk when you are the one who is going to my videos and whining about the music I have playing in the background? It is strange that someone can be so unhappy upon hearing music in the background of a video such as this. I hope to improve my music selection and to stop choosing songs randomly based on the length of the song compared to the length of my footage when it is in the time line.
@parsleysprigs The town does not really exist any longer. I think there are 3 houses or so still there. You can find before and after photos of where the town used to be though.
Fantastic, making a mockery out of a complete tragedy. If you actually knew what you were looking at through that camera, you wouldn't think it was so cool then. I hope your towns infrastructure collapses like that one did so I can take my camera and go make a mockery of it. If you don't see what I'm getting at, your lost. JMO
@luigi34343 If I went to Gettysburg, PA and shot some video and posted it online, would you also call that a mockery because there was a battle there in which people died? I think that if I shot at Chernobyl, that would be pretty cool too. It isn't normal to get to shoot at places like that. I can see how you can take offense to the use of the word, "cool". That is my fault. I should have said, "interesting".
@stevenbogda Yeah, sorry about the overbearing tone there. Fires like the one that destroyed that town are pretty common and are often overlooked by the media, and government until it becomes too late to do anything about. Towns just like that one are collapsing all over this country. Seeing something like what happened to that town just does something to you. Maybe it's just my age. lol But hopefully you see my point.
@Fubs It is a cool place, just don't go in the summer because it is way too hot. I went back recently after this video and shot it again in HD. The video is on my youtube and called "Canon 7D (First Date)".
@Fubs We didn't see any of the people that live there. We did find one of their houses though by accident. It was nicely kept but the grass in the backyard looked like it was burned. It looked pretty creepy.
This is probably the BEST footage to date, I have seen on Centalia. I grew up not far from here and would love to go back and photograph it. There is still a good amount of beauty there as I was able to see in your video. Thank you for sharing.

I love at 4:48 when it says: "Looking for wife... Was told to meet in special place... Contact James." For those who don't know it's the premise of Silent Hill 2.
@stevenbogda Hey sorry I think I may have asked you before already, but any word on your scene file settings and/or post effects? I can tell that you played around with the contrast settings in vegas, what else did you do? I have the same camera (no 35mm adapter though), but still none of my footage looks even close to this good.
@BenjaminKatzVideos Hey Ben. My scene file on the DVX is f6 on the dial with every numerical value at zero to make it flat looking. All the other settings are the same as whatever they were originally. I usually just mess with the curves and the 3 way corrector in Vegas. I am going back to Centralia this week to shoot in HD so watch out for that video too if I upload it to here. If not it will be on my vimeo page.
I am a Film major, and I am actually from the Centralia area... and i just wanted to say how much I like this film and to tell you I am jealous you got to it before me.... haha good job
i went off roading there.. excellent place for off roading. i dont recomend a stock truck because there are humps of dirt put there and were kinda mowed down by dirt bickes but you will bottom out easily
@TheCamraman253 its more like 12 (or so) people still there scattered through out Silent Hill me and some friends are going there next month and we've heard alot of stories about the 12 (or so) people still living there and that people living near the "disaster" have reported sightings of the quote "paranormal" things unexplainable such as creatures the enviroment around them shifting changing right before their eye's im scared yet exstatic to be going there...more scared though
Its amazing, its realy weird when i got there it was midnight because i flew from england to anouther place then drove there, so it is quite scary there but i dont think its exactly like it is in the movie :P
I don't think it is illegal to visit. When I got there there was a bus letting like 50 people off onto the cracked highway. Just respect the town and you should be fine. Don't SPRAY PAINT ANYTHING.
You could get a motorcycle on it without a problem. A car would not work though because both ends of the highway are blocked off by large piles of rock. You would have to cut some trees down to get a car on it.
There you go SalPal. I forgot some people have vehicles that can go off road. The piles are about 10 feet high so I guess that is easy for some vehicles, not a normal car though...
i really dont know the story bout centralia, but it makes me goosebumps! i wonder wer the smoke comes from. and how dangerous the air is.....?? can anybdy mind to tell me... thanks.
Centralia was a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. In the 60s, the mine tunnels caught fire which destroyed the land and cracked the highway. They are said to burn for another 200 years. I am sure the smoke isn't good to breath in, in large amounts. I got a headache after shooting this and I was there for only a few hours.
ooww that was creepy.. never thought dat kind of place exist.. and its pretty interesting. nice job u got filmed an historical place. one of a kind. nice camera too.....
beautiful and what pretty music thanks so much my mom loved these songs and she passed away in 07 so i really enjoyed watching and listening to this thanks keep up the great work where ever you go to -
Well done!! I was hoping you would have taken more footage of the downtown area, but this video was very good just the same. I love your selection of the songs, and you got some very good shots of the pretty prefall foilage.
Yeah, it got dark too quick to shoot some more. I really just wanted to get the highway shots and some smoke that day since I thought they would fit nicely into my demo reel, but I plan on going back and shooting more in HD.
Very interesting video. Never heard of Silent Hill before now. Great music. I was thinking "what an intersting place" right when the song ended--"What an interesting world". thanks for sharing.
Silent Hill was just a old video game they made into a movie. In the movie, the town of Silent Hill was an abandoned town with underground coal fires.
I believe the inspiration for the town in the movie came from Centralia. Except for the ghosts and demons in the movie....
Ok, that makes more sense. Probably would make more if I had A. heard of the game or B. heard of the movie!! I'll ask my teenage boys, they probably will just stare at me like I'm in the dark ages. At that point I will remind them about the time they asked me about a new "band" they had discovered "Steve Miller Band"--upon where I sang every word to the song they played on their MP3 player. Once again, I got the stare! Haaa...trying to keep in the game!
did you shoot in 16:9 or standard?... and what did you save the file as... 720?

imakeefer 1 year ago
@imakeefer Thanks. I went back again recently and shot it in HD. The video is on my page called 7D First Date.

I love at 4:48 when it says: "Looking for wife... Was told to meet in special place... Contact James." For those who don't know it's the premise of Silent Hill 2.

@jessicalisrosa Thanks. It was my Panasonic DVX100B. Nice camera. I am returning to Centralia first week of June to shoot it in HD this time.

@stevenbogda Hey sorry I think I may have asked you before already, but any word on your scene file settings and/or post effects? I can tell that you played around with the contrast settings in vegas, what else did you do? I have the same camera (no 35mm adapter though), but still none of my footage looks even close to this good.
BenjaminKatzVideos 1 year ago
@BenjaminKatzVideos Hey Ben. My scene file on the DVX is f6 on the dial with every numerical value at zero to make it flat looking. All the other settings are the same as whatever they were originally. I usually just mess with the curves and the 3 way corrector in Vegas. I am going back to Centralia this week to shoot in HD so watch out for that video too if I upload it to here. If not it will be on my vimeo page.

haha that's crazy! We were just there today.
I'm uploading a slideshow.
The highway was REALLY creepy. Especially the tag that said "This town will take me, This town will win"
It's worth the trip, for sure!

i was JUST GONNA SAY... this town is like a real life setting of the silent hill movie, then what do ya know; there's a video with that in the title.
welcomegohome 1 year ago
They even have zombies in the underground section of Centralia, just like the movie.

i have been there once its creepy theres only like 3 people liveing there
TheCamraman253 2 years ago
@TheCamraman253 its more like 12 (or so) people still there scattered through out Silent Hill me and some friends are going there next month and we've heard alot of stories about the 12 (or so) people still living there and that people living near the "disaster" have reported sightings of the quote "paranormal" things unexplainable such as creatures the enviroment around them shifting changing right before their eye's im scared yet exstatic to be going there...more scared though
HorrorHiro 2 years ago
Its amazing, its realy weird when i got there it was midnight because i flew from england to anouther place then drove there, so it is quite scary there but i dont think its exactly like it is in the movie :P
NathanAndrewLonsdale 1 year ago

is it legal to go into Centralia? Just wondering b/c I live about 2 hours from it and my friends and I never got around to seeing it yet
09ine 2 years ago
I don't think it is illegal to visit. When I got there there was a bus letting like 50 people off onto the cracked highway. Just respect the town and you should be fine. Don't SPRAY PAINT ANYTHING.
drivebyvideos 2 years ago
can u drive down that road with the crack? I have a motorcycle so I could easily sneak around any road block.
SalPal 2 years ago
You could get a motorcycle on it without a problem. A car would not work though because both ends of the highway are blocked off by large piles of rock. You would have to cut some trees down to get a car on it.
stevenbogda 2 years ago
Bull, There's a very easy way around the blockage on the end furthest from town, got my Cherokee up there easily.
JohnNetzlof 2 years ago
There you go SalPal. I forgot some people have vehicles that can go off road. The piles are about 10 feet high so I guess that is easy for some vehicles, not a normal car though...
stevenbogda 2 years ago
Very professional looking video and great choice of music, you have some talent w/ cinematography.
DeuceMP2 2 years ago
Thanks. I had fun shooting it. I plan on going back over the summer with a HD camera to shoot it again, in more depth.

"The Real Silent Hill" Very appropriate title.

i really dont know the story bout centralia, but it makes me goosebumps! i wonder wer the smoke comes from. and how dangerous the air is.....?? can anybdy mind to tell me... thanks.
zerofatalframe 2 years ago
Centralia was a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. In the 60s, the mine tunnels caught fire which destroyed the land and cracked the highway. They are said to burn for another 200 years. I am sure the smoke isn't good to breath in, in large amounts. I got a headache after shooting this and I was there for only a few hours.
stevenbogda 2 years ago
ooww that was creepy.. never thought dat kind of place exist.. and its pretty interesting. nice job u got filmed an historical place. one of a kind. nice camera too.....

beautiful and what pretty music thanks so much my mom loved these songs and she passed away in 07 so i really enjoyed watching and listening to this thanks keep up the great work where ever you go to -
redbutterflynine 2 years ago
Well done!! I was hoping you would have taken more footage of the downtown area, but this video was very good just the same. I love your selection of the songs, and you got some very good shots of the pretty prefall foilage.
beeprobins 2 years ago
Yeah, it got dark too quick to shoot some more. I really just wanted to get the highway shots and some smoke that day since I thought they would fit nicely into my demo reel, but I plan on going back and shooting more in HD.
stevenbogda 2 years ago
Very interesting video. Never heard of Silent Hill before now. Great music. I was thinking "what an intersting place" right when the song ended--"What an interesting world". thanks for sharing.
marthoner02 2 years ago
Silent Hill was just a old video game they made into a movie. In the movie, the town of Silent Hill was an abandoned town with underground coal fires.
I believe the inspiration for the town in the movie came from Centralia. Except for the ghosts and demons in the movie....
stevenbogda 2 years ago
Ok, that makes more sense. Probably would make more if I had A. heard of the game or B. heard of the movie!! I'll ask my teenage boys, they probably will just stare at me like I'm in the dark ages. At that point I will remind them about the time they asked me about a new "band" they had discovered "Steve Miller Band"--upon where I sang every word to the song they played on their MP3 player. Once again, I got the stare! Haaa...trying to keep in the game!
