@Agent1W Yeah, it's just an evolution. It's still made by FN Belgium though. They just worked with the US government and there US based manufacturing outfit FN Herstal LLC in it's improved design. It was more apparent in the older models of the M249 of the difference though as it originally could be magazine or belt fed. Newer variants these days are solely belt fed though.

@mrmrEazye You only need 3 guns for the Zombie Apocalypse: Bushmaster ACR semi-auto in .223 [30 rds], Remington 870 in 12 gauge [6+1 rds], and a Springfield XD(M) in 9MM [19+1]. Have 10 extra magazines for both the ACR and the XD(M), and a loaded side saddle with stock saddle for the 870. This is not including the KaBar knives you should also bepacking along with some brass knuckles, a Gerber hatchet and Cold Steel Brooklyn Smasher. Machine gun will just go thru ammo too fast. Semi auto is best.

First of all; The M249 has many disadvantages, one of which is the jamming problems which can mean life or death in in a hostile situation. Second of all; The M249 cannot function properly under adverse weather conditions. That could cause somewhat of a dilemma since this weapon is currently deployed in Countries with adverse weather conditions. Third of all; The 5.56x45 is called the "Mouse gun round" for a reason. You're not going to do any damage comparable to that of the PKM.
