Beautiful song!Thank you for sharing, cetera06!I think mr.scheff did a pretty good job with this song. However, at 0:28, it sounds like the track skips to a different part.It almost sounds like there was going to be another verse or continuation of the same verse in the same melody, but then got cut out and changed to a different melody leading to the chorus.Does anybody know if there is an alternate or demo to this song that may include a part that is seemingly cut out or skipped in this version?
Gorgeous song-sadly and I cant figure this out for the life of me but it didnt make the cut for the album CHICAGO 21.I can relate to it from a personal standpoint but love how Jason sings this, not sure what others here are talking about. Its a rough copy due to this being the demo since it was never officially released on any commercial album.Perhaps Rhino can add this as a bonus whenever Chicago 21 is remastered because this really is a beautiful song.
@TimfromChicago Agree with you my friend, but sadly, people just judge in this space without any music knowledge...this is a jewel! Thanks for viewing my vids!!!!!
This whole Cetera VS Scheff debate misses the point. It's not about Cetera and it hasn't been for over 20 years. They had a little commercial success with 18 & 19 but sales have been flat ever since. It should have been apparent by 1990 that Scheff was not the future of the group. They had to have known back then that they needed a better vocalist to get the listening public's attention, but they chose to cast their lot with a Cetera sound-alike and make their money on the oldies circuit.
@fayette202 And do you think ALL those Chicago fans in the US and all over the world (Asia, Philipines, Japan, Australia, Brasil, Mexico, Europe, come to see Chicago just 'cause Jason has a 'Cetera sound-ish' voice? I don't think so! All the REAL Chicago fans ( I'm one since 1969, I've seen Terry and Peter 'LIVE') also LOVE Jason! As I do so! I've seen them in Paris and all the concerts in Europe were 'sold out' and they were so succesful. They just ARE the BEST 'all American Band 'LIVE' ever!
@marmont48 Yeah, well, "sold out" is a relative term. I saw them 3 times in the 70's and also in recent years but the venues now are a fraction of the size they were pre-Scheff. Sorry, pal, album sales speak for themselves. I stand by my earlier comment. The lead singer doesn't have to be a carbon copy of his predecessor to be successful. (e.g. Doobie Brothers) But finding someone who can sing within his range, stay on pitch and not sing through his nose would be a vast improvement.
@marmont48 Wake up and smell the coffee- they're not a whisper of what they used to be. Dude—they're a cover band of themselves. As they get older and have more health issues I'm afraid their time is about up. If they ever hope to be taken seriously again they've got to find viable voice talent to complement the horn talent. Hopefully they'll find someone who can sing before one of them breaks a hip.
@fayette202 >Why being so nasty towards them? Seems to me you're just jealous! Dreaming of performing on stages around the world, welcomed with open arms by thousend and thousend of fans for more than 40 years (Robert, Lee, Walt and Jimmy). And I sure hope you won't ever break a hip or something related to getting older...Calling this band a cover band with those 4 still in it, is mean and ridiculous and very insulting to Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, Jimmy Pankow and Walt Parazaider.
Great voice, great song, this guy sings with feeling something that not every singer has, awesome lyrics, in regards to hitting the note you better start cleaning the wax in your ears, this is a unique voice!!
He doesn't have to sing this song in no lower key. His voice sounds well enough here, I love the way he soars and reaches such level of intensity in this song. this is real emotion! The man has power in his voice and it seems people can't accept that fact.
Jason has a good voice, but what is apparent on this track, and especially on "XXX" is his reaching notes beyond his range. He should take a cue from Cetera and sing most of the tunes in lower keys. Jason would sound a lot better with a a warmer tone and more accurate intonation.

I find your comment very interesting because I feel that while Jason has a "good" voice (really, a great voice!) I find it very appealing and comforting to hear Jason trying to "reach notes beyond his range" like most average people do. What this shows is that Jason is human and in being human, he's just like us. How boring it would be to have him hit every note right on flawlessly. The human voice is the only sound/instrument that cannot be duplicated and because of that, it makes it unique!
Agreed. To a point. But pros are expected to execute like, well, pros. Which does mean solid execution of all notes and as close to 100% accurate intonation as possible. As the jazz legend Slide Hampton once said to me as a wet- behind-the-ears musician, which hit home like no other advice I ever received, "don't try something you can't pull off". Pros test their limits, but don't cross the line into territory they know they can't effectively traverse.
I'm not a musician or knew something much about music. All I know is how to listen. I don't care what the heck is your hitting the note. But this song is great in my ear. It is relaxing and soothing and so the voice of Jason Scheff.
Jason has been a dedicated member since grabbing the reines. Oh wait, here is an idea, lets let one person dictate when our band that we started and who was the last one hired to say when it is over. No Terry? I will take two dedicated members any day of the week. Go buy the new album due out in June.
Yes members of the band left but the horn section and robert lamm are original members and they have more music to give so this cetera talk is lame the show must go on
for more than 40 years now and they're touring Japan and Europe this year and I can't wait to see and hear them LIVE again in Hamburg and Paris, as I did in 1969. And Jason Scheff (2gether with Keith Howland and Bill Champlin who joined the band in the 80's ) can't be compared with Terry Kath and Peter Cetera but those guys are proof that Chicago still has his 'own' sound and I know all the fans can't wait to see and hear them again! I sure can't wait.
That's YOUR opnion! I'm a fan from the start (1968) and to me the sound was Terry, Peter and Robert as leadsingers and the fantastic horn section. I just happen to think that Jason is a very good 'replacer' for Peter and the 'sound' of Chicago is never ruined, just changed. Peter is unique, he'll always will be. Don't compare the 2 of them. Give your your nickname some credit: times (have)changed! Chicago still EXIST (for more than 40
I don't think it was his voice so much as Cetera had by and large become the face of Chicago and once he left, the band was going to see a drop off in sales and popularity.
Thank you G-D for Chicago. Been a fan since I was 9 yrs old. Tough times.......They helped me make it through and survive! <3 4 ever!

I think this song should have been included on "Twenty-1", and "If It Were You" left off instead.

This might only be a demo so his voice isnt hitting the notes perfectly. I still like this song
