It had a great influence during Chandra Gupta maurya times.. It is believed that he renounced his life and became a Jain monk. Now that is fact that you can look up in history books, not only wikipedia:)

The works post AD period (Mukthi period) revolve more around soul and karma.. while the older ones (vedas and earlier Upanishads) are more around Indra and yagnas.. Buddhist scriptures amply demonstrate that Buddha thought there was middle path possible to attain true knowledge enlightenment, one between Jainism and Hinduism. Jainism being more rigorous on one's self. Infact it is documented that he was naked for a while wandered empty stomach and did great penance but it took his focus out of enlightenment and he felt he could better concentrate when he was relaxed that his the whole sitting under the ashoka tree;s logic emerged
