The red top reverses the spinning direction (what you can see as it also reverses the circles it makes, technically called precession). That proves that they played the film backwards to make it rise.

This commercial is actually from 1969, the year the game hit the market. I admired it back then, though I never had the "wrist action" to do well with a game like this.
