I respectfully disagree with Paul on the name issue. (I do not know that he has not asked me to call him anything other than Paul.) But I also see and greatly appreciate where he is coming from. There is a tragic loss of respect among the young for the old these days.
The thing with names is a bit absurd. It is rather cultural thing - calling someone by their first name is not a sign of disrespect. I grew up calling my parents by their names sometimes, with teachers I knew outside of school it was normal. I guess it all really depends.
When he refers to apostle Paul he says 'Paul writes' - is this a sign of disrespect since Paul was an elder (+ a lot of people would feel offended not hearing 'St.' before that).
I think he was talking about addressing the person, talking TO them.. not what to call them while talking about them.
I do think it's more a cultural thing in North America, to call somebody by their preferred title, but use 'Pastor' or 'Elder', etc until specified by the person...
It seems that the more respectful thing to do would call Elder Bob "Bob" if he requests it, over what you're 'comfortable' with...
So I'm not sure if I fully agree with Washer on this, but it's an interesting item...
I think it is great he puts attention on respecting elders - we lack in this in the churches.
Even if we call them by name we are to remember they are to be respected. In the other hand one can call someone 'Mr./Elder + Last name' in disrespectful manner.
