  • You should just drop it if you know what's good for you.

  • MrHank721:Why should I be happy you were only kidding? I wasn't.

  • You don't realize it sucks because your a fuckin' inbred moron! If you think this song sounds anywhere near as good as the original your the one that is fuckin' brain dead AND tone deaf, dumb ass!! Also, how about learning the English language along with punctuation? Now MRHANK this!!!

  • @glorybra have you tried your whole life to be an asshole, well party on dumbass you have made it. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha now remember next time you want to use the computer get an adult to help you. p.s. ha ha ha ha ha ha

  • @MrHank721 At least I tried. You didn't have to...You were born an asshole!!! HA! HA!HA! HA!HA! HA!HA! HA!HA! HA!HA! HA!HA! HA!

You fuckin' inbred moron!! If I need an adult, I guess that leaves you out...BANJO BOY!!!!

  • Wow, people who hate on this recording simply don't understand the creative process at all. This may have just been John warming up his voice, or amusing himself with a tune from his youth etc. Obviously it was not meant for release, but was recorded just for fun, perhaps to decide on the possibility of a proper recording later. Can't people grasp how lucky we are to have these home rcordings? They are a pure window into the heart and soul of an artist who was cruely taken away by an A****le.

  • @charlyW34 I have never read anything better than what you have writen here today. god bless ya` charlyw34

  • @MrHank721 thanks for the nice words. Cheers

  • @charlyW34 your very welcome, nice to know were not the only ones. god bless you and johnny

  • Man, does that suck compared to the original Everly Brother's version!!!

  • @glorybra hey braindead first cant you tell hes just playing around not ment for release lennon and his music are both over the top great the only thing that sucks here is you and the fact you have now shown the world how little you know about music

  • Is this on i-tunes ?

  • That's a very great song of the EVERLY BROTHERS.

  • Great version. Thx for sharing - Could ve done without the MDC photo at the end

  • good song !

  • @elifantbloke i rellay hope ur joking sex pistols and beatles still rocking being total diffrent bands and eras (im guessing ur punk each to their own but dinna get rude about it )plus sid vicous loved beatles ! !

  • @elifantbloke -Don't be an asshole...

  • 'm guessing before the beatles were famous, he an pual sag this and harmonized in the everly style

  • blah...blah...blah...You all just WISH you were JOHN LENNON... but you are not. I am so sorry for your loss. Shut up and listen. Thank you.

  • About this song, the Everly Brothers, and the Beatles: Paul McCartney has been quite open about basing "Please Please Me" on "Cathy's Clown." "Cathy's Clown sold 8 million copies - a huge hit in its day. In addition to the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, Neil Young, and the Bee Gees, among others, have spoken about basing their style on the Everlys. It's all good.

  • @elifantbloke

    Cool story bro.

  • I'm watching a few Everly videos right now. Typical cheesy 50's band. Completely clean scrubbed and white washed. No personality. Even the early Beatles fresh off the plane were full of personality and irreverence and controversy.

See, I'd probably like them if it wasn't for you. You make me want to hate them. I can't stand fanboys. Come onto a Lennon video and give it 42 dislikes. You should be honored that one of the all time greats covered their song.

  • @superman11978 Aren't you guilty of the things you're accusing the other guy of (being a fanboy etc). Why can't you let him have his opinion? He likes the Everlys, you like the Beatles, who gives a ****? Personally I prefer the Beatles, over most bands in fact (though if I had to choose between Sgt Pepper and OK Computer I'd hesitate), but if someone told me Westlife were better than any of them I'd just shrug. I mightn't rush to borrow their iPod but it would be pretty sad to take offence.

  • shit, no wonder it wasn't released, who is the asian slapper, ono it's howls at the moon yoko

  • Goddamnit he was great at singing those 1950's classics!

  • My grandma has been hanging out and is becoming friends with a woman named Cathy who used to date John in the fifties.

  • Great clip BUT sullied by including Yoko. Please re-edit it!

  • Nice clip ruined by putting up a picture of that f&%king idiot.....

  • Take out the asshole and you've got a cute clip.

  • This is clearly JOHN--but he's just fooling around with the song. (He even goofs a lyric, which was a common trait of John's when he was just "brushing up against" a tune for the fun of it. :D

  • The Everlys are true greats. They -- and many others -- inspired the Beatles. Copied? OK, to an extent. So what? They then took it many steps further. And there's nothing wrong with making this public -- in a forum like this, not for an official release -- because it shows another aspect of John Lennon. And...yes, including the Chapman picture here was pointless and tasteless.

  • keefs versions better

  • Chapman? Really? Nice way to end the video. /sarcasm

  • @angiedrumm +1 how on earth could any Beatle/Lennon fan think it would be a good idea to have "he who should not be named" on a Lennon video??

  • did you have to show Chapman?

  • Doesn't sound like John to me.

  • LENNON YOU ARE THE BEST....

    ALBY

  • Why the hell do we need to show that asshole Mark David Chapman in this vid?

Kinda ruins it seeing his fat stupid face.

  • @superman11978 Lennon hyper-recorded his life. He knew everything he did would be eaten up by fans like me.

And for musicians (particularly songwriters) it's necessary to drift off and bring music that you love back to you. Otherwise you go nuts playing 8 bars of music over and over again.

No disservice here at all. During "Two of Us" in Let it Be Paul turns to John and says "take it Phil". You always go back to what you love.

  • Sounds like Paul to me

  • This is a Everly Brothers track!

  • I love the beatles but I love the everly Brother's version of this song more.

  • @tabirocks1989 this is clearly just john next to a portable recorder......this is not even a demo, not even a studio take

  • doesn't sound like John Lennon

  • ...really surprised no one noticed he sang..."here SHE comes...She's Cathy's Clown " instead of "...her HE comes.."...as it was written...obviously he's just having fun with it...I'm sure the Everleys didn't mind..

  • Beautiful...was really getting into it when the pic of that pig Chapman came up. He does not deserve a place in this video. This is John singing a beautiful version of Cathy's Clown. I know you made the video but could you please remove that animal from it?

  • Geez to all the peeps who REALLY don't know the Lennon history, John said sooo many times that he was inspired by the likes of Buddy Holly,The Everley bros, Little Richard, etc John was one of the greatest song writers of our times. And to the tone deaf ningconpoop who said in his post, that he is glad, John is dead, shame on you, I bet your Mum is really proud of you..

  • beetle are a bunch of thiefss who do money over others song who arent popular at all fuck them they were the lady gaga of 1970.... fuck those thief... look at Should Have Known Better from them sound as the same as cathys clown from everly brother... they dont have skill they just know how to copy a song and do money over it without getting in trouble...good thing 2 of them died...

  • Comment removed

  • I love this version so much! his voice is extremely amazing especially how well the piano fits in this definitely would've made a single for john lennon if it was released!

  • beautiful version.

  • Of course he's just fooling around. But I think it's well worth to listen to, he gives the song a special touch. He's really singing to himself, and the style is similar to a lot of other home recordings from the period.

  • sounds more like neil young then john lennon.

  • I cant believe anyone would judge John Lennon over this bit of tinkering/messing about

  • Of course this is just a demo, and John was toying around with it. I still prefer this over the Everly Brothers and The Blue Diamonds versions, because John did something different with it. It doesn't sound upbeat at all.....very sparse and haunting.

  • If you play guitar, you'll realize that Cathy's Clown surely influenced John's writing of "I Should Have Known Better" as the chord structure is quite similar with a slightly speeded up tempo. We all borrow from those that came before and the Beatles were the advent of the second wave of rock n roll. The Beatles harmonies are mostly borrowed from the Everly Brothers as well. Nobody is born in a vacuum. We learn from one another!

  • @randec1 i hate them they copy song from artist who arent popular and do money over it...

  • @frankthegreatone Sorry, but the Everly Brothers were one of the biggest acts in show business in the late 1950s, early 1960s, roughly the equivalent of Elvis and the Beatles. The Beatles always openly acknowledged their influence. The Everlys made a lot of money before anybody ever heard of the Beatles. The Beatles were very smart to borrow from them, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, etc. and make it all their own. It was a supreme compliment.

  • @frankthegreatone there's no one who dosen't learn from others. that's humankind.

  • @hwanj I could not have said that better

  • Genial.

  • as good as the Everlys !

  • Pretty sure it's Everly Brothers

  • horrible sound

  • not esecially good but different the sound is ....refreshing

  • Favorite version of this song. Something about a different rythmn and the piano.

  • Everly version is much better

  • Good Lord, some of you people need to get a grip. So one master is singing a few lyrics of another master's song. BFD, baby. And if case anyone has forgotten, the Everlys' influence on harmony singing in rock music remains incalculable. But maybe Lennon just liked the song, that's all. I mean, can't rock gods be fans, too? Personally, I'll bet Bob Dylan would be happy to sing you the Beach Boys' "409" or "Little Deuce Coupe" if you ask him nice.

  • @jfrankley55 Of course John is a fan of the Everlys. The Beatles always acknowledged their debt to them. But credit where credit is due is not a bad thing. Little Richard was one of the few to stand up and demand recognition for innovating what other people stole. I like this track a lot, but he's not even trying to get the lyric right, so it's obviously a rough draft not meant for public release. The Everly's original classic is amazingly nuanced and deep, as this would be if developed.

  • @jfrankley55 i have to dig what you said, for sure

  • Weird, I haven't been able to get into the Beatles much, but I prefer this version over all the others. Seems to be the most emotional and ethereal.

  • john lennon´s voice better than paul´s?? theres no question about it angelical

  • I always find this rendition melancholy, but in a beautiful way, I seem to be alone this, but I love johns vocal work in the video, you can hear the emotion oozing out

  • wait.... so mdc (mark david chapman) was a fat dude? I thoguth he was skinny.... mdC iS A fAT ASS!!!!!

  • Lol just add the mugshot of John's killer, nice job :D

  • I tried finding this song on Limewire, but it couldn't find anything. =(

  • Yoko's Clown

  • why do you put an image of Lennon's killer in this video? I'm watching this thinking about Lennon and feeling happy and then you show that. Thanks for ruining my day.

For the love of god. DO NOT GIVE LENNON'S KILLER THE ATTENTION THAT HE WANTS.

  • @wellyes YEAH! WTF! That should be a picture of that dickheads death certificate.....Peace all

  • @wellyes john lennon is a true legend been a fan many decades now, chapman rot in hell you scum i wish i could meet you someday.

  • @wellyes i agre with u mate

  • @wellyes

    Youtube -

They Sold Their Souls For Rock And Roll

  • @bc9021010001, yes we should because those were the best farts and mumbles the world will ever hear

  • Why do people say he sounds bad on this? I tink his voice is as lovely as ever.

Second, like Auramac said, this wasn't even intended to be put out there for us. He was singing for himself.. So this isn't very fair to him, is it? :)

  • Thanks Pepsthecat. Beatle haters can kiss my arse.Nuff Said.

  • Yes, this is John Lennon, who surely didn't intend it to be released, analyzed, and critiqued by morons who don't realize that even geniuses sing in the shower and occasionally record themselves when stoned. I find it interesting- only whets my appetite for a proper, serious version of this great song by this, along with Dylan and The Beatles as a group, my favorite artist.

  • This is actually a beautiful rendition, but you're getting some negativity here for a simple reason. This is an old song that few would know, and so anyone who's doing a search for it must know it to heart and feel very nostalgic towards it. Therefore, they would hear this and think it was garbage. But for everyone else, this is a heartbreaking and powerful song with lyrics that make no sense -- but that doesn't really matter. The meaning comes from your own soul.

  • @superman11978 Not really. The Everly Brothers were the masters, and the Beatles freely admit they copied them. If this is indeed John Lennon, then he was just tinkering, not recording for public release. Improvising a kinda-sorta lyric to a beautifully crafted classic is something one might do when fooling around or working things out, not when one is performing. It does not serve John Lennon to have this bit of tape made public.

  • @bc9021010001 The Beatles admitted to taking the Wooo's from the Isley Brothers.

  • @Marshallsg Little Richard. The "woos" in "She Loves You" were borrowed from Little Richard.

  • @bc9021010001 The Beatles came out and said that they were from the Isley Brothers.

  • @Marshallsg The Beatles covered the Isley's "Twist and Shout," the original of which includes several "whoos" written into the song. Paul McCartney has said Little Richard influenced the "whoo" in their own compositions like "She Loves You" & "When I Saw Her Standing There." Little Richard was already a shrieking wild man long before the Isleys transitioned from traditional Gospel to R&B in 1959, two years after Lennon and McCartney teamed up. Little Richard beat them all to the punch.

  • @bc9021010001 You are right the Everly Brothers were the masters but I don't think this is John Lennon on this tape. He would have made it sound much better than this.

  • @bc9021010001 - are you kidding? This is the rawest possible core of the Beatles - to me, it is absolutely lovely sounding. Totally shows where the guy comes from. I'd say it shows the true John Lennon, unencumbered by backwards tapes, 3-part harmonies, yeah-yeah-yeahs, Cuban boots, Hare Krishna, dope, George Martin, and anything else.

    To me, this an education.

  • @bigdaddio11 Sorry -- but this rendition completely mucks up the lyric, and in doing so obliterates the basic structure and meaning of the song. It's pretty, but just a doodle, not meant for the public.

  • @bc9021010001 they took this song and did it as Should Have Known Better and done money over it a lots life isnt fair .... at least john died

  • @bc9021010001 oh certainly this was just lennon hacking around.....anyone that thinks this is even remotely close to a finished recording doesn't know anything about the music business or recording. This clearly is just john with a reel to reel recorder near him......not even a studio demo

  • @inkey2 Of course.

  • @bc9021010001

I really disagree. I love hearing him sing just for fun with a real unselfconscious voice exactly because it's not being performed or released.

  • @bc9021010001 Yeah, The Beatles definitely copied the Everly Brothers. I Am The Walrus is so much like the Everly's it makes me want to vomit.

Face it. You're a fan of a band that, like most bands, has faded with time. That's why you're uber-defensive and have to give thumbs down to anyone who covers your favorite band, especially if that someone is part of a band that seems to be immortal. It's a completely natural response. Also an irritating one for people who just want to listen to music.

  • @superman11978 Early Beatles recordings were often mistaken for the Everly Bros. in 1964, and the Beatles freely admitted, honorably, copying the Everlys' style in those days. Since the video is purportedly of a Beatle improvising on an Everly Bros. classic, it naturally engenders a discussion of the Everly Bros. vis-a-vis the Beatles. It can be safely assumed that those "who just want to listen to music" don't irritate themselves by reading analytical comments.

  • @superman11978 Sorry, this song is a famous classic.

    >>"This is an old song that few would know ..."

  • this is definitely john lennon

  • Why do people come to Beatles videos then say something like "enough with the effing Beatles....etc.?" Don't come here if you are such a dipshit that you don't like it. If you like, Beatles fans can start going to all the rap or speed metal crapo sites, or whatever it is that you think is good and we can start knocking your shitty taste in music. Go away.

  • @screamingpirhana ...cry baby. lol.

  • Why the picture of DogShit chapman on here? Why give him any exposure? He Destroyed probally the greatist musician of or time, a wonderful and peaceful man. Chapman should be left where he is until the end of his natural life then wiped from memory.

  • @justingramrosa01 .....maybe because this is a DogShit attempt to pass this off as John Lennon when obviously it isn't?

  • @funboy7979

Couldnt agree more. Lennon would be rolling in his grave knowing this shit was out. Same for much of his solo acoustic bootlegs out there. Musicians should really burn the bad stuff theyve got because some day it may get out. I'm sure some people can appreciate this but I'm sure John never intended for 200,000+ people to hear this thing.

  • @TheBriarcliffBoys He did it for a reason, it was recorded, he knew it would be heard. I doubt he would be angry.. as long as people would be hearing it and spreading the message of peace. The more popular he is, the more he remainds in the public conscious the more his message is spread. Think of it that way. This is a beautiful rendition.

  • @savoytruffle1992 Artists always record themselves to play around with later, to pick up where they left off, not for public consumption. Michael Jackson, for example, wrote most of his songs by singing into a pocket tape recorder. I like John's voice here, but too bad he was just screwing around and the really great lyric of the Everlys is destroyed. This would have made a great track if he'd recorded it for real.

  • @mmmrazor To me, this definately doesn't sound like 'screwing around', it is full of emotion, and sounds as though he is thinking of someone especially while singing this song. Definately wasn't 'clowning around.'

  • @savoytruffle1992 The fact that he is not even trying to sing the right words shows this to be a kind of doodling. The fact that it is from a classic song by a group the Beatles have acknowledged to be one of their early influences indicates he would not disrespect them by releasing a recording with a nonsensical paraphrasing of their lyrics. This is nice, but obviously not meant for the public.

  • @savoytruffle1992

I tend to think of these bootlegs being out there for reasons of greed...not spreading Johns message of peace. Usually musicians make recordings like these and call them demos...that are later recorded in a studio. I do like it more after another listen though.

  • @TheBriarcliffBoys Slag off, fan boy. This is a great recording.

  • @FuckingStanz

I guess its alright. I just don't think John wouldve wanted this out there or many of the other bootlegs...seems like somebodys putting these things out there for monetary reasons...this has nothing on Folk IMplosion's Take a look inside.

  • paul mcartney parece un niñito jajaj 0:05

  • nice to hear john thanks scouse tom

  • I wish you hadn't put in the picture of that deranged piece of shit at the end. I understand the effect you were going for but it still bothered me.

  • I never thought I'd say it, but Yoko really was cute back then. And this is a nice demo.

  • The would have been a great version, that deep echoing piano...

  • pretty shit seeing as he clearly doesnt know the lyrics or understand them, i die each time i here your name....cathys clown, the idea in the original is that she treats you like shit so everyone thinks she owns you so you dump her, but in this he fucks it up....goooooooaororoaghahsd typical!

  • Its one thing to get a big hit or 2; its another to hold the champianship and stay on top in any era. These guys were 'TKO" recording kings at the time. They are historicaly famous with a contemprary appeal that the test of time proves. And because of the worlds woes at that time they are like a road sign in our memorys. They were a band that sang and said what thea wanted. They were real people like Buddy Holly was and not some trumped up act like you see alot of today.

  • Great Song, Never Heard, To Hell With Chapman!

  • 1:08-1:11 Mark David Motherfucker you stupid suck ass motherfucker! Go Fuck Yourself you cunt!

  • This should be named "Yoko's Clown."

  • @MILISA99 implied?

  • this is lennon playing around in his apartment studio.lennon never meant to release these songs.yoko ono did.this is on the lost lennon tapes.i guess she needed the money.

  • The Blue Diamonds cover of this is way better musically, even though they don't get the "th" sound right. But I know saying that is sacrilege to Saint Beatles devotees.

  • @bjocelot I'm loving the anti-Beatle comments here.

  • This sounds fantastic!

  • @bc9021010001 my answer to you is YES. they were the biggest geniuses of the 21st century and lots of us here live by their music, so hearing something new after a long time of not hearing something different by them is a giant relief for a lot of us.

  • @bc9021010001 I am 58 years old, and totally agree with your comment. My generation can't let anything go. The Beatles came along at the right time, catching the perfect wave. But that wave made it to shore 40 years ago! If Jack Ruby hadn't murdered Lee Harvey Oswald three months before their arrival on Ed Sullivan, the Beatles may have simply been a blip on the radar, with America's attention focused on the assassination trial. Like comedy, it's all in the timing.

  • @bc9021010001 - if we have the storage sapce to do it, there's no reason not to. If you don't like it, don't listen.

  • @bc9021010001 YES.

No, but seriously, the thing is, they're a great band, and they're obviously not together anymore. It's a marketing ploy at the heart to keep releasing unfinished songs, but it also satisfies the fans and gives them the illusion that they're hearing "new" music.

  • @bc9021010001 Yes.

  • @Marshallsg I agree.

  • @bc9021010001 The answer to that is, pretty much yes. The interest is there. What are you doing here, by the way?

  • @bc9021010001 yes you nob

  • @bc9021010001 Nobody told you you HAVE to watch this video or listen to 'every fart and mumble' as you say...

  • @HTprods Haha, in Soviet Union YouTube watches you ... In the rest of the world we feel free to express ourselves. Stand in the ration line and wait for a cookie, you'll feel better.

  • please pleaze me

  • it's too short for such a beautiful song!

  • Ya Ace'd this one John.

  • This is not John! :O) Nice try though, on the other hand... how dare you?

  • Never was a huge John Lennon fan but this is impressive

  • nice song and video, too bad you ruined it with a picture of the no name shitbag who murdered John.

  • Who? Ringo?

  • Lennon post Beatles has done incredible work. However this isn't on par

with his latter Grammy winning work. Cathy's Clown was written by the Everly's

and played up what they did best: singing in harmony. For the Everly's it

made them mega stars and the biggest hit of that year. There is no question

that this song is theirs. This is not saying John isn't doing a good job but in my opinion it' does not topple the orginal.

  • The Everly Brothers version is awhole lot better.

  • it sux! lol

  • I don't know if it's John or not cause it sucks so bad .... but showing that pathetic loser who shot him in the back at the end didn't add anything

  • this is john lennon. anyone that's heard john post beatles should be able to tell that after the first note was sung. it doesn't suck! john didn't have the best voice in the world, but it's unique and conveys more feeling and emotion than 99% of singers out there. you not being able to hear that in this demo is your lose. thanks for posing this. it could have done without chapman at the end. you're just giving him the fame and recognition he was seeking when killed john.

  • This isn't Lennon, sounds more like America or CSNY

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah--this should have stayed unreleased too...yuck

  • The KINGS of Music right there!

  • Definitely John -- too bad he didn't polish it and release it. It's one of my fave Everly tunes!

  • not Lennon, not even close.Hard to fuck up this song, but whoever this is does so without much effort

  • @ceeexemcee it's obviously Lennon's vocal and keyboard style, and his personal hint of soul is hard to mistake

  • Comment removed

  • @StarburstPhotography Yo ! I guess you listened to John's songs, but sadly missed his message. To Hell with Hate ! Fact o' the matter is, if Yoko would have been killed B4 John's eyes, a huge part of John would've died as well. He loved her, so Get over it!

  • @ChicagoNeilcon i agree with you. don't know that John could have made it without her...people are so ridiculous with their condemnation of her or their love. who the hell did they harm loving one another??? they didn't take any one's freedom away or violate any rights. they loved, collaborated and create music and peaceful demonstrations. damn, I'd rather have real love than a trophy wife....

  • @biggoodness Julian

  • @snoogans999 i'm not going to sit in position of judge. cause sure as hell i made mistakes in my life. what's important are reparations. and john was attempting to heal that relationship prior to his murder. julian was only 17 when his father died; so much possibility was taken. i don't condemn john or yoko for their humanity and neither should you 'lest you want to live your life in an unforgiving way towards those you love who have disappointed you.

  • @biggoodness I'm not judging, I'm just saying

  • @snoogans999 before john met yoko he was an absentee dad to julian. sad but true. only before her it was three guys by the names of paul, george and ringo that kept him from being available emotionally and physically. we don't fault The Beatles for what was truly Lennon's inability to be a dad- and i have compassion for him only because pain and personal demons keeps lots of people from giving & receiving love. he was a human being after all - a genius but still human.

  • @biggoodness you are missing the point though. You said no one was hurt by John being with Yoko. Julian was. Paul George and Ringo spent quite a bit of time with julian all things considered(and remember Paul wrote Hey Jude for him), can the same be said with Yoko? If John wasn't with Yoko he probably would of seen him at least once during that 4 year period. (Yoko was like a male lion that ate the litter of her mate, - regarding John's life)

  • I don't know.but.I keep coming back to this song.John sings this song w/so much feeling it is almost hypnotic.Never knew he cd play the piano, either. He is singing from the heart and enjoying himself, not having to have the pressure of recording to interfere with. Just great!

  • Okay, giving the doubt sayers their due.. let's just say this is John. That said, as much as I love John.. this still sucks.

Question is - why would you even post this crap?

  • u love john? and call this crap...sounds to me like you want to love john lennon but have no really appreciation for what made his music great.

  • Well who ever sings this, it sucks
