  • is the Pandora still worth it in 2012

  • does this perform well in actual play? because i am unsure whether the demos are prerendered, but i doubt it, in which case real play should be good in theory

  • idiots this is demo play

  • are you playing with the nubs? because those are some amazing reaction times if you are

  • how big does your sd card have to be to run it smoothly?

  • wait, is that online?

  • can it play Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory?

  • @Yoshimitsu74

damn this could be epic on wifi

  • does it have onlineon the pandora

  • I want a pandora so bad :D its soo impressive!

  • so did you connect a mouse to your pandora or are you using the analog pad for viewing and aiming?

  • Nice! So even circle jump work? That is impressive!

  • woosh, would love to see Jedi Academy on this (Since it uses the Q3 engine :P )

  • @Lunchbox6954 theoretically possible but must be open source for someone to grab and port it

  • But can RTCW/ET run on Pandora?

  • @locke284: I've never heard of it.

  • And also, I'm pretty sure it's possible to plug in a mouse and keyboard to the pandora ;]

  • Comment removed

  • I wonder how does the guy play with so much dexterity on that thing.

  • its a demo

  • Is this DEMO? I had seen this demo before

  • @ioptional

first word of the video description/first few seconds of the video should answer that -.-

seriously guys, why not use your own eyes to answer questions :P

  • This is a source port FFS.

  • Yeah. What else would it be?

  • I would love to see it run games based on the Cube / Cube 2 engine. I'd love to be able to play Sauerbraten on a Pandora.

  • I'm sure someone will try to port Sauerbraten eventually. Right now, I haven't heard anything.

  • Devs said Cube 1 is a definite possibility. However, Cube 2 / Sauerbraten is pushing things quite a bit. It COULD be possible, but it's very process intensive and could lag. We'll see how it goes in time I suppose. I'm hoping it can be done. :)

  • Well, Nexuiz will probably run. That game's engine has the ability to run well on lower systems with all settings at minimum and to lag some medium-higher end machines at full. So it would depend on how flexible the cube2 engine is. I think it is flexible enough to work.

  • @zenvidar: huh?

    Cube 2 is Sauerbraten.

Nexuiz uses a variant of the Quake 3 engine last I heard, not Cube.

  • Actually it uses the Darkplaces engine, which is actually based of the Quake(1) engine.

  • @cyborgtroy Nexuiz uses Darkplaces engine which is Quake 1.

  • Seeing the Pandora running Quake 3 at 60fps quite easily makes me very optimistic about its potential.

  • to be coooel

  • Because some of us weren't blessed with analog-nub aiming skills.

Or to just type faster... I don't play a lot of FPS games.

  • Does the RC of this Q3A is 1.32 point relase ??

  • iPod touch doesnt have the buttons to play PC games The Pandora will give control for any game you can think up.

  • Sure it may be able to run it, but quake 3 with analog nubs?

  • You can plug in a mouse and keyboard through USB or Bluetooth if you want.

  • fucking fanboy

  • It's actually quite small.

  • And how the hell do you actually PLAY such games on shiny bling bling?

  • woah woah woah, take it easy on the flaming pablojre, im on all sides of this war, i like windows, mac and linux, and i have a windows mobile phone too,i never dissed pandora, its a great system and i love opensource software btw

  • Actually Pandora is only a little bigger than a DS, so it can be carried in a pocket.

  • really? never knew that, tho i usually dont like to pocket my DS

  • OMG Its even better than i thought !!

    Gimme !

  • Wow, it's running incredibly smoothly!

    I want one of these...

  • Nice work, I've been waiting so long for this!!!

Time to order one then I guess!

Now if we could just have proper vsync...

Might just be YouTube or Adobe Flash Player, but w/e.

  • I want the pandora! I'm as impatient as cartman waiting for the wii! I'm waiting for the second batch... and i'm gonna play play and play again!

  • i am so goddamn glad i reconsidered and reordered . . .this is going to be sofa king awesome

  • Unreal Tournament sux Quake rulez !!!

  • And excessive usage of the letters x and z plus other occasional typos make you look dumb.

So how about trying UT at least one time instead of writing garbage?

    IMHO:

UT is great (grew up with it), I never played QuakeIII but I am willing to learn it because we will never see UT on the Pandora.

  • Both games are great. as the other guy said you make your self look dumb.

  • EPIC.

    Handheld Trem here we come.

Sadly I don't think it would run UrT though.... D:

  • It will, i've tried.

  • awesome!

I seriously can't wait til this thing comes out......

    ahhhhhhhh

  • unreal tournament is the best game of this genre

  • And OpenArena?

  • It's not optimised yet ...

60+ fps should be easily achievable.

  • I hope this is ioquake3...

  • hell yeah it runs!!!

  • How strange it stays at 40fps. I have a feeling we have some more to get out of this!

  • Are the drivers pretty much finished now or can we expect some performance improvements by the time the final unit is on sale?

  • You can expect things to get faster as we use more of the hardware and get openGL2 running.

  • Great can't wait to try it out when my pandora arives

  • Thank you Pickle!

    Great! 40 FPS!

    Good results, very good.

  • Looks great!

    I can't wait for this.

  • Geil geil geil! bin ital neidisch

  • mmm... The OMAP processor will carry a heat dissipator? these graphics are at high process

  • nope, its not an x86 - it doesn't get hot (atleast not on the beagleboard)

    - Next thing I would like to see is Warsow, I'll probably try that myself tho

  • funny to see this, as the omap is arm based, so one of it's main characteristics is actually its low-power consumption and low heat dissipation... its fast (and can get some 50% faster than that), noiseless (no fans or anything), doesnt get hot and draws a lot less energy than a regular x86 processor :)

  • nice job!

  • BOOM sackshot

  • WOW.

  • Very nice to see this running this smoothly and at a nice framerate

  • 000000.0 , I wet my pans again !

  • muhahhhha... muuuhahhahahha1!!!! muhahahhaha..... oh wait.... was i typing out loud?!

    This is awesome!

  • BTW how are you controlling the crosshair? Via USB mouse or nubs?

    Thanks!

  • It's a demo played from the PC, but Pandora Quake 3 probably will have support for nubs (USB mouse would give players huge advantage)

  • I hope there will be servers just for the people who are playing with the nubs or gamepads, and with maps that are fun without that stupid hopping.

  • I recommend Pokémon for you

  • eh?

  • Actually, OpenPandora comes with USB ports, and runs under Linux. So plugging in a Razer mouse is possible if you want to play Quake 3 PC, Doom 2 and Counterstrike 1.6 and Half-Life.

  • Actually, Half-Life and Half-Life mods won't run on Pandora.

Even though HL1 was based on open-source Quake code, Valve went ahead and didn't release any of their modifications.

So, Quake 3 and Doom 2, yes. Possibly Doom 3 in another year or two, when id releases the source.

Half Life and Counterstrike, no. Not ever, unless Valve ports it themselves or gives out the source to someone who does.

  • Or unless we could somehow install Windows or MacOSX on a Pandora...

  • It doesn't matter if MS release an ARM port of Windows XP and it could run on the Pandora. You still need to compile HL,CS to ARM to able to run it. So in the end Valve have to release the source code or port too Linux and compile their games to the right architecture.

  • Impossible. Not even WINE is possible. Why? Because it has an ARM processor.

  • WINE is possible, with things such as Qemu. Not fast, but possible.

  • Saying WINE is possible is like saying booting Windows is possible. (Emulating is not booting, and wine is not an emulator). For WINE, the Pandora would need an x86 CPU.

  • Okay, x86 is emulatable, but only to the point of DOS games.

  • But it's still WINE.

    Game, set and match ;)

  • No, it's not WINE. Look at the name Wine Is Not an Emulator. WINE will never run on a Pandora because it has an ARM processor. Period. You can emulate x86, but that isn't anything to do with WINE. That's what you'd have to emulate to run WINE, but it's impossible to emulate it that well, but it is possible to emulate very, very, very simple things like DOS games (which are older than you)

If you say WINE can run on a Pandora, that's saying Windows can. It can't.

  • I know WINE is not an emulator. Clunky method, but here goes QEMU>X86 Linux> WINE. Or Just QEMU>Windows. Something to that effect. That's how I see it any way.

And I swear to god, youtube has the most broken reply system ever.

  • maybe Windows CE... ;)

  • Except Counterstrike and Half-Life are Windows games, not Linux, and no, you can't use Wine because Wine is just a compatability layer, not an emulator so you couldn't use that to play them. Unless Valve open-source the Half-Life engine then you're not going to see them. The mouse, Doom 2 and Quake 3 are will work fine though.

  • one word: Win

  • DAMN so smooth!!

    Great job guys!!!

Hats of, the pandora might be able to run doom3 :D

  • Doom3? At a playable speed? I kinda doubt it, sadly :(

  • no really,

When Doom 3 releases the code though... (it was stated in a interview this might even be possible.) I believe it..

John Carmack did some great programming on Doom3, the pandora might run it in a low res, and overclocked to 900 Mhz

  • OH HELL YES.

  • Well done Pickle!

  • It's so beautiful...

  • Hats off to you!
