does this perform well in actual play? because i am unsure whether the demos are prerendered, but i doubt it, in which case real play should be good in theory
Devs said Cube 1 is a definite possibility. However, Cube 2 / Sauerbraten is pushing things quite a bit. It COULD be possible, but it's very process intensive and could lag. We'll see how it goes in time I suppose. I'm hoping it can be done. :)
Well, Nexuiz will probably run. That game's engine has the ability to run well on lower systems with all settings at minimum and to lag some medium-higher end machines at full. So it would depend on how flexible the cube2 engine is. I think it is flexible enough to work.
woah woah woah, take it easy on the flaming pablojre, im on all sides of this war, i like windows, mac and linux, and i have a windows mobile phone too,i never dissed pandora, its a great system and i love opensource software btw
funny to see this, as the omap is arm based, so one of it's main characteristics is actually its low-power consumption and low heat dissipation... its fast (and can get some 50% faster than that), noiseless (no fans or anything), doesnt get hot and draws a lot less energy than a regular x86 processor :)
Actually, OpenPandora comes with USB ports, and runs under Linux. So plugging in a Razer mouse is possible if you want to play Quake 3 PC, Doom 2 and Counterstrike 1.6 and Half-Life.
It doesn't matter if MS release an ARM port of Windows XP and it could run on the Pandora. You still need to compile HL,CS to ARM to able to run it. So in the end Valve have to release the source code or port too Linux and compile their games to the right architecture.
Saying WINE is possible is like saying booting Windows is possible. (Emulating is not booting, and wine is not an emulator). For WINE, the Pandora would need an x86 CPU.
No, it's not WINE. Look at the name Wine Is Not an Emulator. WINE will never run on a Pandora because it has an ARM processor. Period. You can emulate x86, but that isn't anything to do with WINE. That's what you'd have to emulate to run WINE, but it's impossible to emulate it that well, but it is possible to emulate very, very, very simple things like DOS games (which are older than you)
If you say WINE can run on a Pandora, that's saying Windows can. It can't.
I know WINE is not an emulator. Clunky method, but here goes QEMU>X86 Linux> WINE. Or Just QEMU>Windows. Something to that effect. That's how I see it any way.
And I swear to god, youtube has the most broken reply system ever.
Except Counterstrike and Half-Life are Windows games, not Linux, and no, you can't use Wine because Wine is just a compatability layer, not an emulator so you couldn't use that to play them. Unless Valve open-source the Half-Life engine then you're not going to see them. The mouse, Doom 2 and Quake 3 are will work fine though.
is the Pandora still worth it in 2012

Nexuiz uses a variant of the Quake 3 engine last I heard, not Cube.

Actually, Half-Life and Half-Life mods won't run on Pandora.
Even though HL1 was based on open-source Quake code, Valve went ahead and didn't release any of their modifications.
So, Quake 3 and Doom 2, yes. Possibly Doom 3 in another year or two, when id releases the source.
Half Life and Counterstrike, no. Not ever, unless Valve ports it themselves or gives out the source to someone who does.
cyborgtroy 2 years ago
Or unless we could somehow install Windows or MacOSX on a Pandora...
