  • If only my ukulele sounded like that.

  • So sick. What uke is that ?

  • wow

  • My grandmother used to play the Ukele I miss her : )

  • I love this song. I've known it for a while now, being hawaiian, but i dont know how to play it! Haha.

  • What kind of ukulele is that? and can i get the tabs?

  • how about stop arguing trying to proove each other wrong... lets enjoy the music

  • @BadGuitarPlayerRock Actually the ukulele was not invented in Hawaii but imported by Portugese sailors. The only truly native instruments of the Pacific Islands are percussion and wind instruments.

  • How fortunate for me and all of my classmates to have Carl as our Uke teacher!!!! I am brand new to the Uke or ANY musical instrument and I kind of suck at playing (after only 3 classes) but I can see that the more time I spend with my new little friend (my uke) the closer I will get to my neighbors actually liking with they hear over the fence :) - Carl is an awesome dude with a great sense of humor.

  • beautiful indead

  • Teach me!! I love it!!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!

  • kapahala?

  • what kind of uke is he playin?

  • fucking sweet sound

  • This is amazing! Hawaii is a little island, right? How could people invented such an impressive beauty...

  • @BadGuitarPlayerRock think they were inspired by the beauty of nature, the sea, the sky ....

  • Sungha Jung can play both at the same time :D

  • I bought my ukulele today. Someday I will play like that...

  • @DakineFreestyles808 enough of those comments from everybody

  • its jonny tsunami grand dad

  • @longboardingVA SO TRUE

  • If you don't mind, could you please tell carl that this is the most amazing ukelele piece i've ever heard in my entire life? seriously, he is so talented. if there is any place to purchase his music, i'd be interested.

  • While the loop pedal theory is nice, it's far more likely, he just recorded himself playing multiple tracks,,,Either way, it sounds great.

  • Ahh Brah!! Dis Guy Iz AWESOME!!! Love dis song!!!

  • Fantastic!

  • wowowowowo! Jakie Chan plays the Uke

  • Awesome!! Peep the dislikerz peep em all. Awesome

  • What is the make of the ukulele? It's got such a great sound

  • wow :)

  • He's using what is called a loop pedal wich records up to around 40sec of music playback, He record's his first strum by the tap of the pedal, which plays back his first strum, at the same time, he can add other thing's on top like (scaling, and picking etc) and record/playback these aswell.

But in this case he just use's the first strum and adds on top of it, with the help of the loop pedal, which is a very handy pedal to use for solo's........i have this equipment myself.....Guitarist

  • @JESSePAUL100, No looping electronics were used. In the "info" it explains, "Carl Ray VillaVerde plays both rhythm and lead in this version." We taped the rhythm and played it back and he accompanied himself playing leads the second time. You can see dissolves between them. When his right ear has a dark patch, that is the headphones used for him to hear himself for the taping the leads.

  • @Christopherabrown served

  • @JESSePAUL100 fail.

  • @JESSePAUL100 lol; way to get it completely wrong!

  • ITS THE WAHINES WAY OF PLAYING DOUBLE PICKING..

  • HES TOO AWESOME .. THANK YOU FOR TEACHING ME AT UNCLE SYLVESTERS ALOHA A HUI HOU

  • Wonderful playing. It looks like a tenor ukulele to me. What a nice job he does!

  • is that a standard, or soprano size?

  • The best Ukulele of youtube!

  • 13 dislikes from jealous people

  • HE has Steel strings right?

  • it sounds a bit similar spanish gipsy music

  • Fantastic!

  • If he's a master I want to be his student. THE UKULELE'S APPRENTICE!

  • When he's playing the background, he has a small smile on his face. He's really enjoying that song. I almost enjoyed it just as much. Thanks so much for the post. Beautiful

  • WORKIN IT

  • he's the man....wish i was as good as him but check me out anyway..hit on gypwin..cheers

  • Effortless perfection. Incredible performance. This is Spellbinding/Mind-boggling.

  • Beautiful

  • Skills !

  • I WANNA LEARN HOW TO PLAY LIKE YOU!!!!!!-no homo-

  • a true hawaiin !

  • this guys great!

  • its like everytime he plucks a string once he makes the ukulele double the sound unless there is another guy playing im not seeing i like it though

  • @intupspaturken You are mostlyright. In the info is a description of what is happening. He plays rhythm first then plays leads.

  • His virtuoso play on the ukulele is a balm for body and soul. One cannot learn something like that, one gets it in the cradle laid. Lots of love from Germany.

  • what is the name of the song?

  • MAGIC !

  • Does anyone else think this guy looks like the grandpa from Johnny Tsunami?

  • Comment removed

  • That is amazing!

  • Fucking hell that s damn awesome you are playing so good that it looks easy but only look !

  • Only lived in Hawaii (Hilo side, big island) for a year but I found 2 things I love: Hawaiian music (especially slack key guitar) and Lau Lau.

  • nice spanish sound

  • Oh verdammt ist der gut.

  • That was OFF THE HOOK , pure genius.

  • looks like playback or there must be 2 ukulele players if you look at his fingers and to the music seperately

  • They are both seen and heard. carl recorded the rhythm first, then listened to it and accompanied himself with leads. Note his right ear has a small headphone when playing leads. Dissolves are between the different parts.

  • where is the second ukulele player? xD ;-)

  • Great Artist, This is MASTERPIECE. I love it

  • really good performance, but what type of ukulele is that?

  • dont mess with this dude hes in the zone. hell yeah man.!!!!

  • uke music is beautiful. he's very good.

    -Yasmin

  • This dude gets crazy laid, and if he doesn't he should.

  • lol my little sis married a doll cause she has a crush on "prince Eric" from Ariel so she said her "Honeymoon" would be Hawaii then she wanted a Hawaii song and I clicked on the very talented guy!

  • Beautiful. I think the Hawaiian people have a connection to the ukulele in the same way the Okinawan people have a connection with the sanshin. An island nation thing?

  • .19-.24 are my favorite seconds of this vid. This guy's a magician with the Uke.

  • I've heard many recordings of ukulele players here but your's is really amazing. Bravo!

  • Skills and he feels the music, the result is magic for the ears.

  • Carl Ray Villaverde is a master and the magic does flow.

  • @bsod4u2 type in uncle magic kauai... he get magic for the ears!!

  • this is like flamenco style guitar : ) i play flamenco and i'm looking into playing ukulele. it would be easy for me to learn it cuz the styles are just so similer! just a ukulele is wayy smaller then a flamenco guitar

  • Skillz!!

  • Awesoma man xD

  • Gawsh :] Its a tottal Hippi'ish kind of instrument :} Love it..

  • I want a cd or something cause he is a ukuele ninja!

  • Wow! That was very kewl indeed! The only thing missing is us in the background with our bongos playing along! As soon as I get some time, I will try to get some video of an Appalachian favorite - the dulcimer!

Will post on our sister NamaSpirit sites!

  • Woah! Just awesome, ey!

  • i want to learn that :D

  • lets see slash pull off that one! seriously that was cool as hell.

  • this guy is a master

  • Yes, he is. Brilliant arrangements flow so easily. I'm hoping to do more with him.

  • I look forward to that, if you post them on youtube.

  • Don't mean to be racist or anything but, his wife looks just like him with the same shirt and all except shes playing rhythm.

  • Comment removed

  • There's more than one person playing and this is edited so we can attribute everything we're hearing to the guy we see playing.

  • actualyl it is edited but it is him playing both sections. it shows you how he is playing lead and backgrounds, pay attention

  • 1:24 to 1:50 MEAN!

  • Awesome. That s what ukulele about. Island sound makes everyone comfort and happy.

  • Go to 1:03 and watch his hands and listen.

  • Damn, your good!

  • Comment removed

  • this is awesome music. how can i get a cd?

  • ya!!! Hawaiian style bra!!! all da way!!

  • awesome ...

  • there are more than one ukulele playing, without any doubts

  • You hear both rhythm and lead all the time, you only see one at a time but you do see them both. When the dark spot is over Carls right ear he is listening to the rhythm and playing lead to it.

  • 3:16

is it me or does that sound more like two ukuleles??

  • it says in the description that he's playing lead and rhythm, so dont worry it wasnt you haha

  • awesome man nice so cool

  • Wonderful. Great playing and beautiful melody and harmonies.

  • dang ur good!

  • I wish I could play like you... but you are so good... so untouchable.

  • I've played uke all my life and this guy is Great!!!

I couldn't touch him. He's got to be the best I've ever heard ever!!!!

  • muy bonita musica

  • you're not born with the ability to play a song by ear it comes with practice. that said, i don't think making a song accessable to those who want to play it amounts to killing it. if you want to improve as a musician, figuring a song out by ear is a great way to do that. if you want to play this song just because you feel like learning it there is nothing wrong with tabs, lots of people knowing a song doesn't 'cheapen' it or anything.

  • someone 's playing in the background with you?

  • If you read the videos information you will see he is acompanying himself and if you watch closely you will see that there are 2 videos combined.

When the black spot appears on his right ear, (headphone) he is playing leads to the rhythm which was recorded first.

  • If you read the information it says that Carl first recorded the rhythm then listened and accompanied himself. In the video you see both with dissoves back and forth. When his right ear is darkened from the headset he is playing leads.

  • super nice ukulele-player.very,verygood.

  • has anybody ever made a tab to this, its very catchy

  • tabbing music is the same as killing it. once tabbed, everyone has it and it becomes so common they disrespect it.

Learn it by ear and it will mean that much more when you play/perform it.

  • good point

  • What if you haven't got a good enough ear to work it out? Not everyone is blessed with that ability.

  • wuts does tabbing a song mean?

  • In fact, Beethoven died in 1986 when Thelonius Tab first started to tab music.

  • woooooooow awesome, amazing, greaaat!!!

    i love iiiittt!

    peace from macedonia to hawaii!!

    :D:D:D

  • dang your great! i loved it

  • Never heard it jazzed up like this. Very nice.

  • Che my brothers! The Ukelele was brought in to Hawaii by the Portuuguese, it's called Cavaquinho over here. Cheers from Portugal!

  • Yea, Carl is playing, but there are 2 recording sessions. First the rhythm, then he listens to that with a headphone (note the dark spot on his right ear) and then he plays leads to it.

  • ho dis braddah is bad.

    untouchable

  • maestro! that says it all

  • is he playing these songs with a low g-string? it looks like it

  • wow..awesome..!!!

  • Great!

  • very god ..i like this its original from Haway.... Best whishes from Bawarian Germany

  • OMG...MAHALOZ BRAH

  • Amazing!!!...

  • three words: oh my god

  • thats 5 words and a symbol

  • Lmao.

  • a symbol? lmao

  • That was so cool! I am going to start playing the Ukulele myself soon and I hope to be half this good someday!

  • Do You Have The Tab For Both Rythym And Lead

  • Good! I keep forgetting that. I believe you are correct but am going to check with Carl to see if he recognizes that.

  • He's playing with another person....watch closely. When he's playing in the high register...you'll realize there's other ukulele sounds and it's not him playing. It's background music. He's just playing along with a recorded CD or another player.

  • You see 2 different shoots. On one he's playing rhythms, and the other he's accompanying himself playing leads to his rhythms. When you see a dark spot on his right ear he's doing leads. Dissolves are between them.

  • (info)

He'eia is an traditional Hawaiian song about the Kings favorite surfing spot. It was originally a chant that has been adapted to ukulele. Carl Ray VillaVerde plays both rhythm and lead in this version.

  • Beautifully played. This is masterful, I've never heard ukulele played so well.

  • very good chris!!!

    aloha from Brazil......

    Fabio Cestari Accorsi

  • I dont care how its done its a fantastic tune & the guy who is playing it is truly amazing & very entertaining. Thanks for sharing. Hope we see alot more of this guy.

  • Dont think i have ever seen anyone make such an amazing sound with any instrument!

  • Did you know that the video switches back and forth between a rhythm recording then Carl playing leads to the rhythm but you hear both all the time?

  • omg my ukulele doesn't sound anything like this lol!!

  • hes not even trying!!! perfect

  • thas cool. what size ukulele is it?

  • baritone

  • im sorry , i mean tenor lol, its really late

  • I sort of know what you mean about ukeleles being toys... I play guitar, and I play a ukelele just for some light relief and to put a smile on my face! I just like to strum a few chords for fun.

This guy however shows that they are not exactly toys. True professionalism, wonderful video!

  • Hot damn! Who said ukuleles are toys? I don't think so...

  • THIS IS FUKING PERFECT!

  • I believe He`eia is a mele ma`i.

  • This originally was a chant and although on the surface you may think it is a song about Kalakaua's favorite surfing spot, the kaona, the hidden meaning of the song is actual a mele mai, a song about the King's prowess with the women. The songs were hoped to be a self-fulfilling prophecy to help perpetuate the race.

  • Hey so good, keep on.

  • GaranT!

    808 All day!!!
