hi jason, thanks for the review. i got this laptop and i noticed the bottom left side of the laptop feels VERY hot after a while of usage. In an air conditioned room, it would be ok but if in a normal room, it would be quite hot to rest my left hand on that space left of the touchpad... Is this a common issue with this laptop?
@perwiratempur You got the AMD CPU version, right? Yeah, the AMD Neo CPU cranks out a lot of heat because it's quite power-hungry compared to Intel CPUs. I'm afraid heat is part of the deal with AMD CPUs.
@ThoughtsMedia hmm guess that's the deal with AMD... tho is there anything I can do about it? Also would the heat cause any problems in a prolonged usage? lastly, i use my laptop quite often on the bed (no, not for THAT reason) and it stays on a pillow or a mattress, so i'm worried if this might cause the heat to be too hot and damage my laptop, will that be the case? sorry for the machine-gun of questions but thanks a million, cheers
@perwiratempur There shouldn't be any problems from prolonged usage, so long as the laptop fans are able to cool the unit down. Putting it on a pillow or mattress can be a problem if the heat vents are blocked or partially blocked. My advice? Get a a laptop desk or stand - there's all sorts of them out there. I use one made by Lapworks, and it's really great.
hey i was wondering how loud the fan noise is, would it be annoying if you were using it to take notes in class, and also would people around you be able to hear it to the point that it would be distracting?
@Mandofouronefive I didn't find the fan noise to be particularly loud - if you're just taking notes, the CPU doesn't have to work hard, so the fan should stay low. If you're playing a game in class, the fan will get louder because the system is having to work hard. So don't play games in class. ;-)
im kinda thinking of getting this im 13 and im thinking of getting it for Christmas.i am not a gamer i use comps for facebook and myspace and youtube. would u recommend this to a young teenager?
right now i have a 15 inch acer and it sucks ass and it gets really hot at the bottom because of the fans.
does this one over heat at the bottom? please reply!
ps.. i love your review when i need help on a computer review i would watch you.
@Girisgreencrazeiful Sure, I think it would be a good laptop for you - I didn't notice any heat problems on the bottom, but the thinner the laptop is, the harder it is for heat to dissipate, so the bottom of many laptops will get warm...it really depends on the type of CPU in the unit since they kick out the most heat.
@Girisgreencrazeiful Oh, I forgot to mention that one of the best laptop accessories you can get it is a laptop rest for your legs - look up "lapdesk" and you'll find a few options.
Great Review....I totally agree with you about the "Mulit touch". I thought it was something i was doing wrong until now. Also , I am a Gamer and can play most Games if i drop the quality of the graphics. Not every game is a problem but it seems most of the games that are made for consoles, this lap top has trouble running. Otherwise , this is a great lap top for under $ 700.00. You can really do a lot with it.
Hey, I know its been a while since you got yours but I was wondering if you remember if the speakers had any centering issues? I just got my dm3z and I noticed that the sound is towards the left. Now, if I use software balance to move all sound to the right, I find that it is coming from the center- meaning the right speaker is in the center of the laptop.
@ivr56 What's the point of playing a game without AA turned on? Games look like jagged crap with AA turned off, so if the GPU can't handle the game you're wanting to play, you're better off with a different computer.
once i get this laptop im gonna overclock it faster haha =D this is just normal settings ... not really the fastest portable laptop but it has potential... thats i believe
@CiTRxJ That's true...I never think of software-based overclocking because it doesn't seem very reliable to me, but I guess for some people, it might be good enough.
@ocielini yes you can! you need to flash your BIOS (update). Instructions and file can be found on hp site under deivers and support section, just type in your dm3-xxxx model name
Hi Jason, Charles here...I recently purchased the HP dm3 from HP...I just caught your review of it and I myself was alittle weirded out by the mouse pad, but I use a wireless mouse....I see what you were saying about it and I have found thing wrong with....yet. But great job on your review....
Great review! I think i've picked out my new laptop becasue of this!
How is the keyboard for typing? I've used some chicklet type keys before that are a little too far apart or too small so you feel like you're going to miss the key.
also, i know you can't test it but since HP made a driver update, does that mean any new computers sold will automatically have this update?
@K8EE00 The keyboard is pretty good for typing...I'm trying to remember if the dm3 was the laptop where I felt the keys were a bit too far apart, but I've looked at so many laptops lately I can't recall. I probably mentioned it in the video if that was the case. I doubt the new computers will have the driver update, but it's easy enough to get.
The bilingual keyboard on hp laptops in Canada really gets me upset. I also find that the SHIFT key on the left side of this laptop is excesively small.
Other problems with the touchpad are the buttons are too stiff and the shiny finish looks disgusting after you have touched it once (doubt if a new driver will fix that) . My other main gripe is with the power connection. It plugs left hand side and makes an otherwise sleek attractive computer look very ugly. Otherwise so far I'm reasonably happy with my dm3 1010AX.
Yes, saying "umm" is a habit I'm trying to break. It's hard to talk for 13 minutes without a script to follow. :-) I'll do my best to say "umm" less. :-)
extremely useful review! thanks man! i was thinking of getting this but now maybe i won't rush into getting it just yet... thanks a lot you've saved me a good amount of trouble!
have one, speakers are on the bottom.. altec lansing srs.. NOT very loud at all.. compared to my toshiba but the system itself is awesome besides the speakers
I think with the AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) w/512MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 4330 Graphics. up grade you can play games more easily.
The dm3 I was sent doesn't have a back-lit keyboard...and on HP's Web site, there's no option for a back-lit keyboard. So what makes you think yours has a back-lit keyboard? :-)
haha no man in your awesome vid it looks like your keyboard is lit up, like it has a backlight and i was wondering why mine DOSENT light up like yours haha, but yea now i have confirmation from you that yours wasnt lit up haha...still a great vid though
I heard that on this Laptop you're able to watch tv on it and record without having to pay. Now I was wondering if i can make a request. Can you make a video comparing this laptop vs. the new mackbook pro? I'm kind of stuck whether i should get this or the apple. Any advice or tips? thanks!
You'd need to get a USB-based cable/TV tuner and connect it, then you can use Windows Media Center on the device to record/watch TV.
As for the Macbook Pro, I don't review Apple products. A big reason why is that Apple doesn't send hardware out to anyone but the biggest reviewers (Engadget, etc.). The other reason is that why I don't like Apple products very much. ;-)
I like choice. I like being able to pick the best products for my needs, not be told by one company "These are your options". Apple makes some nice products, but I prefer to select from computers, laptops, and netbooks that come in all sizes, shapes, colours, and configurations. Plus, I'm a Windows guy - I don't like OS X very much. I do, however, have an iPod Touch and think it's pretty slick. :-)
Take a look at the thinnest laptops out there today - none of them have optical drives. Most people hardly use optical drives - they're going the way of the floppy drive.
Hey, i´m having this this overheating problems, but on the left arm rest part of the notebook (where i think is the hdd, since i feel a light vibration). It´s not terribly hot, but it could be pretty anoying if you´re typing a long text.
I also noticed that the hdd doesn´t seem to stop spinning (or at least slow down, as i´ve noticed with other notebooks). Anyone else having this issues?
so i thought I would let you know what I bought. purchased a moderately built dm3z with AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) w/512MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 4330 Graphics, 3g ram, 320g HardDrive and wireless N card. Got it all for a bit more than the budget (hehehe) but I think i will be happy with that. Thanks alot for helping me decide
sry I keep bugging you, but with talking to the boss(wife), i need to stay around 600. So a nicely equipped hp dm3t is out, and the mini 311 and dm3z are back in. I have read reviews of each sayin a decently built dm3z studders on hulu, shows, movies etc, where as a fully decked out mini 311 runs those fine (for a netbook). That and skype are the biggest things for me. And since I can get a top on the line mini311 and a moderate dm3z for the same price just need a bit more advice. Your my HERO!
but you still dont think skype will work well with on a netbook? Which is equally important to me as streaming shows online. if i do buy the dm3z, i would get AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) with ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics. 3g ram, 320 Harddrive. wireless-N card. On the mini 311 everything would be maxed out lol
I did a quick Web search, and Skype on netbooks seems to be a common thing - and, in fact, I should have remembered that many netbook vendors ship Skype on their Linux-based models, so it must work. I can't give you any more advice on what to buy - both will do what you want, you just need to make a decision. :-)
this particular laptop switches automatically to discreet graphics (the hd3200) when it is plugged in. it switches to a graphics similar to a built-in intel when it's on batteries. I think you'll get better performance when you play games on AC mode, not on battery mode. Will let you know when I get my dm3 from bestbuy next month.
The version I was sent only has the HD3200...so what you're saying might be true for the version that has the HD4330, but that's not the version I was sent. I saw no evidence on any of the spec sheets that this unit I tested had more than one GPU. Plus, I saw the same performance when I was testing it on AC power.
I am also deciding between this or the mini311. Both built the way I want it would be around 600 so I need to choose. I will be using it for traveling alot and over my tdys and deployment coming up next month. Need something that can handle a bit more than everyday computing and can play hulu, etc shows and skype my wife with! Any advice on which one?
I've never done Skype chats on a netbook...I'm honestly not sure how the processor would handle it. The dm3 would probably be a better bet, but that touchpad is FUBAR so I'm hesitant to recommend the dm3. Overall I think the Mini 311 is a better product, but it might not have enough "oomph" for you.
thx for the very quick reply lol. Im actually on hp website trying to decide now. Well the touchpad doesnt bother me much. I always use a usb port mouse so if they had an option to remove the pad I would take it! With that said I think I am leaning toward the dm3. It seems to have the power im looking for dealing with web videos/mutitasking and very light gaming for the same price. the ddr2 vs ddr3 memory and the nvidiaion graphics vs the ATI Radeon has me a bit worried. Any thoughts? Thx again
If you're looking at the dm3, the only option is the ATI Radeon graphics....looks like you're considering the Intel-based version as well? I haven't tested that version, but it would probably end up being better - but more expensive. If you go for the AMD version, go for the Radeon 4330 if you plan on doing any gaming at all on it. Don't worry about DD2 vs. DD3, it doesn't matter in a product like this.
i'm relatively new to laptops. but i was thinking of getting pretty much the same specs you have, and i was only gonna use it for skool, minor video edtiing and utube videos. which you recommend this laptop? and if not which one would you recommend for at least 750 or less? please and thanks
I'm pretty sure the fix will be via a software update, not something you'd have to pay for. A product recall, where you have to ship it back to HP to get something repaired or replaced, is very rare.
Hey, Im now debating whether or not to get this. I was going to get the hp 311 but after I built it to what I want, its the same price as the dm3z after I built that. Im going to be using it to carry around and use it for internet and just basic programs like mcrosoft office and very basic video editting. Is it worth to step up to this with a 1" larger screen? Do you know if HP is building this model in a 12" screen? Thanks.
Yes, I'm quite sure they'll be trying to address this problem since every review I've read has complained about the touchpad. As for when, I don't work for HP, so I have no idea.
I used the radeon 3200 for a few months before i got my 4830. played portal, half life 2, and cod4 pretty well, in fact i had crysis running too. one thing though, turning on anti aliasing cuts the fps in half, so don't even bother. half life 2 and portal ran maxed out at 800x600, crysis ran all high except shaders and shadows at 800x600. its actually really good, but like all 3xxx gen ati cards, they have crappy AA performance.
I actually ordered a Dell Studio 17 for my own use - for CES 2010 - but Dell is telling me it's going to take a MONTH to build and it will arrive after CES. :-( So I might have to cancel my order if it can't get here sooner than that...
It's pretty good, though I did notice that the keys are a bit further apart than normal, and as a touch-typist I found myself struggling with it a little. I talk more about this in my review article at Digital Home Thoughts.
Yes, that's correct. The Adamo CPU, clocked at 1.2 Ghz, completed my ProShow Gold test in 5 minutes 56 seconds. The AMD Athlon Neo X2 CPU in the dm3, clocked at 1.6 Ghz, completed the test in 6 minutes 44 seconds. The AMD Neo isn't much of a CPU in terms of performance, or even in terms of low-power usage (18 watts isn't much to brag about). It's just less expensive, which allows HP to sell the dm3 for less...
Thank you very much these reviews were very helpful! I watched the unboxing and both actual reviews and they were the best reviews I have seen on youtube. Thanks!
Yah great video. I been waiting for one for a long time! BY the way, I have an hp mini and it has the same problem to. So I just bought and external mouse and i doesn't do that anymore.
Awesome review! I have one thing to say though, which is that whenever gaming on a laptop having the power plugged in will improve the performance of the computer! So maybe next time you should have th e power plugged in for gaming demos.
I did my main gaming tests with it plugged in, so that was as good as it got in terms of frame rates, but I didn't do head to head test with it off power and on power. Next time. :-)
Looks like HP copied off toshiba a bit

Hey i'm thinking of buying the same laptop but the one i found has different specs than this one you're showing. It has:
Intel Duo 2 SP9300 2.26 GHz , 6 Mb Cache , 500 GB HDD SATA II 7200 RPM with HP Protect Smart HD , VGA NVIDIA GeForce G105M 512 MB up to 2000 Mb, etc.
So, does it deserves the extra bucks (Keeping in mind that i'm an insane gamer)? Or should i search for the cheaper one above?
Thanks.

I think with the AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) w/512MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 4330 Graphics. up grade you can play games more easily.

how come my dm3's keyboard dosent light up? Your's looks exactly the same as mine except for what looks like your ENTER button is bigger than mine...
JakeB777 2 years ago
The dm3 I was sent doesn't have a back-lit keyboard...and on HP's Web site, there's no option for a back-lit keyboard. So what makes you think yours has a back-lit keyboard? :-)
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
haha no man in your awesome vid it looks like your keyboard is lit up, like it has a backlight and i was wondering why mine DOSENT light up like yours haha, but yea now i have confirmation from you that yours wasnt lit up haha...still a great vid though

have you read of any fixes for the touchpad?
gaozhi2007 2 years ago
No, I haven't. But I also don't have the dm3 any longer - I sent it back to HP - so I don't think about it any more. ;-)

the 311 mini can run mw2 at nice fps and this one can't or so?
SebastienDS 2 years ago
I heard that on this Laptop you're able to watch tv on it and record without having to pay. Now I was wondering if i can make a request. Can you make a video comparing this laptop vs. the new mackbook pro? I'm kind of stuck whether i should get this or the apple. Any advice or tips? thanks!
shortymscookie15 2 years ago
it really depends on wht ure looking for and ure budget
cruzz903 2 years ago
You'd need to get a USB-based cable/TV tuner and connect it, then you can use Windows Media Center on the device to record/watch TV.
As for the Macbook Pro, I don't review Apple products. A big reason why is that Apple doesn't send hardware out to anyone but the biggest reviewers (Engadget, etc.). The other reason is that why I don't like Apple products very much. ;-)
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
oh okay thank you. Why don't you like apple products very much?
shortymscookie15 2 years ago
I like choice. I like being able to pick the best products for my needs, not be told by one company "These are your options". Apple makes some nice products, but I prefer to select from computers, laptops, and netbooks that come in all sizes, shapes, colours, and configurations. Plus, I'm a Windows guy - I don't like OS X very much. I do, however, have an iPod Touch and think it's pretty slick. :-)
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
Yeah true. So i was wondering how would i install some things on this laptop if there isn't any "disk thingy" to install it in?
shortymscookie15 2 years ago
That "disc thingy" you need is a USB-based external CD/DVD drive. They cost about $60 or so.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
WHAT! That sucks, it would have been nice if it already had one built in like other laptops.
shortymscookie15 2 years ago
Take a look at the thinnest laptops out there today - none of them have optical drives. Most people hardly use optical drives - they're going the way of the floppy drive.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
Ohhh. Back to the old times. lol.. but thats cool.. i guess. hey i heard that with AMD, the laptop gets really hot?
shortymscookie15 2 years ago
No, I didn't notice any particularly troublesome heat issues.

are you sure xoz if i buy it n it gets hot JUST LIKE MY DV5-1070ee I WILL KILL MYSELF
when you played cod4 on it this is where its supposed to get hot so did it ? :D
CDOMRHELL 2 years ago
It does get pretty hot with the 4330 dedicated card when gaming (TF2). Unusable on your lap, but nothing that would like kill the mobo.
3r1c8y 2 years ago
Hey, i´m having this this overheating problems, but on the left arm rest part of the notebook (where i think is the hdd, since i feel a light vibration). It´s not terribly hot, but it could be pretty anoying if you´re typing a long text.
I also noticed that the hdd doesn´t seem to stop spinning (or at least slow down, as i´ve noticed with other notebooks). Anyone else having this issues?
saviopts 1 year ago
so i thought I would let you know what I bought. purchased a moderately built dm3z with AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) w/512MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 4330 Graphics, 3g ram, 320g HardDrive and wireless N card. Got it all for a bit more than the budget (hehehe) but I think i will be happy with that. Thanks alot for helping me decide
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
Sounds like a good config - enjoy it! :-) And stay safe wherever you're being deployed...
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
sry I keep bugging you, but with talking to the boss(wife), i need to stay around 600.
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
Seems like going for the Mini 311 is a good plan then!
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
but you still dont think skype will work well with on a netbook? Which is equally important to me as streaming shows online. if i do buy the dm3z, i would get AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) with ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics. 3g ram, 320 Harddrive. wireless-N card. On the mini 311 everything would be maxed out lol
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
I did a quick Web search, and Skype on netbooks seems to be a common thing - and, in fact, I should have remembered that many netbook vendors ship Skype on their Linux-based models, so it must work. I can't give you any more advice on what to buy - both will do what you want, you just need to make a decision. :-)
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
yeah your right. thx for all the help and I think I got my decision
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
this particular laptop switches automatically to discreet graphics (the hd3200) when it is plugged in. it switches to a graphics similar to a built-in intel when it's on batteries. I think you'll get better performance when you play games on AC mode, not on battery mode. Will let you know when I get my dm3 from bestbuy next month.
mariusfestejo 2 years ago
The version I was sent only has the HD3200...so what you're saying might be true for the version that has the HD4330, but that's not the version I was sent. I saw no evidence on any of the spec sheets that this unit I tested had more than one GPU. Plus, I saw the same performance when I was testing it on AC power.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
also it would be the dm3t series I would be biulding so scratch that graphics card fight lol
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
OK, if you're building the dm3t, then I'd go for this config:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor SU7300 (1.3GHz, 3M Cache) with 512MB NVIDIA GeForce G 105M
4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
You said you're going to be deployed, so you might also want to get the external optical drive so you can install software, rip DVDs, etc.
Merry Christmas. :-)

thx alot man. I sent you a friend invite and subscribed, you have been a big help
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
I am also deciding between this or the mini311. Both built the way I want it would be around 600 so I need to choose. I will be using it for traveling alot and over my tdys and deployment coming up next month. Need something that can handle a bit more than everyday computing and can play hulu, etc shows and skype my wife with! Any advice on which one?
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
I've never done Skype chats on a netbook...I'm honestly not sure how the processor would handle it. The dm3 would probably be a better bet, but that touchpad is FUBAR so I'm hesitant to recommend the dm3. Overall I think the Mini 311 is a better product, but it might not have enough "oomph" for you.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
thx for the very quick reply lol. Thx again
HOPEFULartist07 2 years ago
If you're looking at the dm3, the only option is the ATI Radeon graphics....looks like you're considering the Intel-based version as well? I haven't tested that version, but it would probably end up being better - but more expensive. If you go for the AMD version, go for the Radeon 4330 if you plan on doing any gaming at all on it. Don't worry about DD2 vs. DD3, it doesn't matter in a product like this.

say i bought this computer now. if HP came out with a fix for the touchpad, could i send it in get that fix for under $50 or so?
silverboots000 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure the fix will be via a software update, not something you'd have to pay for. A product recall, where you have to ship it back to HP to get something repaired or replaced, is very rare.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
Hey, Im now debating whether or not to get this. I was going to get the hp 311 but after I built it to what I want, its the same price as the dm3z after I built that. Im going to be using it to carry around and use it for internet and just basic programs like mcrosoft office and very basic video editting. Is it worth to step up to this with a 1" larger screen? Do you know if HP is building this model in a 12" screen? Thanks.
camarosam 2 years ago
Between the two, I'd get the HP 311 - given what you're going to be using it for, the 311 is a better fit in terms of battery life, size, etc.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
Ok thanks. The HP 311 will be able to handle Microsoft word without any problems?

the highest and fastest for gaming mostly
it seems to me that some of the best games like left 4 dead work best on a tower

I don't know much about gaming laptops - you'll notice I've never reviewed one. If you want the best gaming performance, you get a desktop PC.

jason could you tell me the laptop that you think has the highest res and would be the fastest?

The highest res for what? And fastest at what? A Dell Studio 17 with a 1080p screen and a Core i7 processor would be right up there...

camarosam 2 years ago
do you think HP will update the driver or firmware for the touchpad? when?
1Teguc1 2 years ago
Yes, I'm quite sure they'll be trying to address this problem since every review I've read has complained about the touchpad. As for when, I don't work for HP, so I have no idea.

ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
I used the radeon 3200 for a few months before i got my 4830. played portal, half life 2, and cod4 pretty well, in fact i had crysis running too. one thing though, turning on anti aliasing cuts the fps in half, so don't even bother. half life 2 and portal ran maxed out at 800x600, crysis ran all high except shaders and shadows at 800x600. its actually really good, but like all 3xxx gen ati cards, they have crappy AA performance.
thebeetalls 2 years ago
Thanks for the input. AA turned off makes the games so damn ugly that I don't consider it a reasonable option, but some people might not mind. :-)

Do a review on the Dell Studio 1745!!! :)
toonygamer2004 2 years ago
I actually ordered a Dell Studio 17 for my own use - for CES 2010 - but Dell is telling me it's going to take a MONTH to build and it will arrive after CES. :-( So I might have to cancel my order if it can't get here sooner than that...

OUch :\ That's unfortunate :(
A month seems a bit too much..
What were you going to get it with??
If I have mine ordered out today, for example, I can have it by January 5.

Hey Jason. Just wanted to confirm that the dm3's AMD processor was slower then the Dell Adamo's processor which is slower clocked?
ktwei 2 years ago
Yes, that's correct. The Adamo CPU, clocked at 1.2 Ghz, completed my ProShow Gold test in 5 minutes 56 seconds. The AMD Athlon Neo X2 CPU in the dm3, clocked at 1.6 Ghz, completed the test in 6 minutes 44 seconds. The AMD Neo isn't much of a CPU in terms of performance, or even in terms of low-power usage (18 watts isn't much to brag about). It's just less expensive, which allows HP to sell the dm3 for less...
