When I originally saw this I hesitated commenting on it. I have a lot of experience with this particular topic and have done extensive reading on it but have always had a difficult time coming to a concrete stance. Thanks for this rhyme.
I don't necessarily think having a drink "dumbs you down" There is really nothing wrong with having a drink with dinner or just casually. And I have been able to have fun both ways, responsibly. In the end we all have different opinions about this, which we all are entitled to--they all might even be good opinions.
I looked back had three post that were removed . I remember what my thoughts were. It reminded me of how someone close to me concorded a drinking problem. Also my own determination not to have to use that as a crutch for what I feel is social awkwardness.
I'm 25 and I've never been drunk, and never done illegal drugs. I've watched a number of people in my life drink and most use relaxing or having fun as an excuse, and feel the need to declare how good of a drunk they are when not even being questioned. Yet all of them seem to use it to avoid dealing with life, or start as fun and end with stupid arguments or fights. I stay sober to prove to the world you can have crazy amounts of fun without dumbing yourself down. Oh and.. nice flow.
It is an interesting connundrum...if you are a performer who doesnt drink as a lifestyle choice or who is in recovery, you are forced to play the game alongside those who support the very thing from which you make a habit to keep away. Double-edge sword really - by performing in a venue that serves alcohol you are indirectly evangelizing the use of a drug you dislike. And yet...you need to eat. Only thing you can do is stay true to you and your art. This was good...thank you.
So, even if some venue owner is happy with making less profit, they don't have a choice - if they don't attempt to do this, someone else (usually a corporation but not necessarily) would get them out of business by offering lower prices.
It always end up being connected to consumerism somehow, doesn't it? Sure, there's nothing wrong with the venue owner offering more services (i.e. selling alcohol, for example) - the audience has more opportunities to enjoy themselves, while the venue makes more profit. But we've come to the point where the capitalistic quest to maximise profits is dominating every part of our lives.
I've been Straight Edge for three years now and I feel more and more confident that this was the right choice to make.
I used to drink and smoke without getting too smashed and I thought was important not to drink too much. For your physical health - yes, drinking a bit is not a big deal. But, at least in my case, quitting even the casual drink with my best friends actually changed the way I think.
Anyway, you're totally right about how every artist depends on the audience buying drinks. :(
When I was younger I always took pride in not being a drinker and a looked down apon it in away. Now that negative out look of it has deminished and I'm more likely to have some but not much and not often. Then and now however it does amaze me how "normal" some drugs are treated.
I've never drank alcohol in my life... maybe because I'm only 15. But, a LOT of people in my school do, and I noticed that's what makes them, "cool". I think it's pretty dumb, especially because the majority of those kids drive home later. They're putting their lives on the line for just one night of fun that they won't even remember. I mean, a little is fine if you're old enough, but people that are totally hammered suck.
Here's another palindrome: A man a plan a canal panama.
Hey Jaime, this is Mica from the FoCo activate booth and the holiday party. I just wanted to tell you that this really touched me. My sister recently just lost her job due to not sleeping because she drinks excessively nearly every night. I wish so many people didn't sell out to doing drugs or drinking just because it's cool/everyone does it/whatever.
I've had some good time's while drinking but I've also seen the down side. RESPONSIBILITY is the number one thing to remember when drinking. don't over do it kids.
I have much respect for you for rapping about something that is the accepted norm for the majority of Western society. Personally, I drink at times but never a significant amount and not often. Once or twice a month maybe? And when I do drunk, I find there is a line between being a little drunk and absolutely destroyed that I never cross. That being said, my drug of choice isn't alcohol. I prefer the less accepted though, safer option of cannabis. I was wondering, what's your opinion on this?
Haha, I love the ending. But more importantly, I love the whole song. It's great. I live my life drug free and alcohol free, not just because it's healthier and you're realer without it, but because I've seen so many people just lose their shi- to alcohol. And it was never fun watching it, I doubt it'd be fun being it.
Anyway, I love your little P.S. I'm @jazz136 btw lol
I dig it thoroughly...senior in high school now, seems like almost everyone insists on inebriation for good times. I think it's just rooted in insecurity, that people feel that their usual selves aren't good enough, and try to escape that. I just feel bad for them, need to find a healthier release
I have a lot of friends who drink and do drugs as well. Well, "friends" used loosely. I don't do that shit though. It's very interesting though, complicated is an understatement.
Hey, I'm also a tee-total guy who doesn't do drink or drugs, and it always helps to have people like you and Rise Against as role models to show its not just me whos resisting influences. It really has become a strong part of my identity, if anything, enforcing my identity as it is.
And by the way, I don't know if you read these or not, but I just thought I'd thank you for introducing me to Walking Tree. Since that day, I've been researching non-stop, basically. My sentiments really lie in the hearts of the Guatemalan people, and I'm going to decide very soon if I'm going to go there, or to South Africa with a different organization.
I definitely appreciate the overall message here. Saying that the past-time of alcohol has only brought about negativity is, ultimately speaking, correct.
I personally believe that there is a time and a place to be under the influence of something, but there's a fine line between partaking, and being taken away by whatever your medium of choice may be. If you're drunk or high all of the time, then you can't appreciate reality for what it is. That's called being over the edge.
This rhyme is dope, and f sprite. Haha but seriously this is totally necessary. I'm sure theres people out there that don't listen to all the propaganda, but when it comes from someone like you, who knows what theyre talkin about, it makes all the difference. Another nice one, keep it up.

I've told myself since I was younger that I never want to be drunk. This and the comments inspire me too :-) Thanks.

Same with me. I don't plan to drink when I'm older, nor take illicit drugs.
