Holdsworth, Zappa, and many others were masters at this type of solo. Check out a tune by Joe Satriani called "Not Of This Earth" and you will notice the same type of "outside" vibe to it.
These are the type of solos that tend to grow on you over time.

By the way its a direct lift af a Charlie Parker horn line. very difficult to play for most "rock guys", and yet when it resolves, it makes it's point. Shelski was very underrated.
