My ponytail palm bonsai I have had for 7 years, I am afraid of cutting the roots when replanting. I replanted it yesterday but now saw this video, not sure I dare to cut the roots:(
Can someone please reassure me I have to cut the roots or can i leave cutting the roots out?
@teresachristy You can, and if you want you can try rooting them to get more little ponytail palms. Don't cut off all three at the same time, though- cut one off, then once it's growing happily, try cutting another off. Always leave at least one shoot on the mother plant.
@bonsai9723 hi sorry to disturb, do i have to cut the roots off? I replanted mine last night but afraid (saw this video after repotted it) to cut the roots off? :( Can it die by cutting the roots off?
I found a cheap paint ball gun you can buy at wal-mart deters squirrels from invading your garden without doing any serious harm to them if you decide to shoot directly at them and not a little bit to the left or right just to spook them.
why would u disturb the roots as much why not just plant it in a bigger pot messing with the roots like that and stunt it or even kill it if done wrong it would grow much faster in a bigger pot
I loved my palm. I had it for about three years and it was HUGE! I went from a 12 inch pot at a 24 inch pot. The palm leaves (?) were a total of about 5 feet around. It was a beautiful plant. That is, until I brought it home and my cat's got a hold of it...BEWARE OF CATs!!! They LOVE to chew on the leaves...
If anybody knows how to keep them from doing that, PLEASE let me know...
Hi, I have many Pony Tail Palms. Sometimes they outgrow their pots, but with trimming they can be relatively stable. I have also planted bonsai Pony Tails outside and they grow into regular trees. Jerry

Should I trim tall shoots from the top of my ponytail bonsai? I have three tall shoots.

BTW That is amazing that you've had that Pony Tail Palm for over 11 years, I've only had mine for about 3.
I wonder what mine will look like in a few more years. I didn't think they got tall at all.
Nice trim, looks great.

@TimmyHaag they should be able to reach 18-20ft but that would require a big ass pot.

That's just me, I feel bad about killing flies.

The squirrels are my friends and I wouldn't think of shooting anything at them. I now have peanuts that I bought for them. They win.
bonsai9723 2 years ago
I did peanuts for awhile but as soon I would forget to spread them out the night before, they would be climbing the screens of my windows.
I use the paint ball gun to shoot near them to not at them. It takes a couple of "near misses" for them to get the message to stay away but it works.
But just like peanuts, you need to keep doing it for it to work if killing them is out of the question.
Either way they are smart little jerks that happen to be very cute and very persistent in my opinion.

Because then you would hust get a bigger plant. The idea here is to miniaturize. Read some bonsai books. Jerry

Hi, They are great bonsai subjects. Sorry to hear about the cats. Don't know enough about cats to help keep them off.
Thanks for the warning! Jerry
