I'm gay but I think it's ridiculous, for all the reasons you said plus one more: Bert and Ernie already exist to teach children that you can be friends with someone different than yourself. They already convey a message of tolerance, to narrow the focus to GAY tolerance might do more harm than good.
I think it is wonderful that they are making bert ad ernie gay, It shows children at a young age that it doesn't matter what love looks like. Also It's not teaching the children to come on to their friends, Bert and Ernie aren't doing the naughty on a kids channel lol.
@Daviticus042 It's unlikely that anyone will be ready for it for a long time, but that's the good thing about this, they are preparing people for it now, as gay marriage continues to arise, our culture will start to change more so than it is now. The generation we live in now has already been much more accepting than 20 years ago per say. By marring Bert and Ernie its a small step to a better culture.

You did bring up a good point about a gay character. They can't be described by some physical sexual attraction, and you can't use stereotypes either. I think their best bet is to make a character have 2-moms or dads and try best to be nonchalant about it most of the time to teach more tolerance.
