Haha! What a ludicrous thought, ahhh us brothers, eh? We'll both live long happy lives, certainly not as some crude, dusty old pervert on a tropical island leading a nation into ruin.

My everyone commenting on these I Claudius uploads seem so coherent, concise, and....... articulate. Not used to that on youtube. Hmmm. I think everyone is checking their grammar (and spelling) before posting and not writing in some weird sort of short hand, that teenagers employ while texting. You know, the "OMG" stuff. I suspect that most of the people posting on these videos are over 40 years of age. That's most unusual.
@packjim56 Well, it's "lass", but that mistake's made a lot. I was driving my parents nuts by the time I was eight, having finished the entire British equivalent of "Dick and Jane" at six. I chose to devour every bit of printed matter I could get my hands on, regardless of whether it was trash or classics, suitable for a child or not...very C.S. Lewis! Luckily my father decided to introduce me to Claudius, which occupied me for a while...
Tiberius. Romes most addicted gambeller!! He ran up such huge gambelling debts that he forced nobles to kill themselves so he could get theyre money to pay off his debts! i read about it.
There is nothing like this being done today . . . no doubt someone wants to do a dumbed-down remake. Gladiator was so unbelievably bad, so wooden by comparison. Producers think the public wants effects and flash-bang, not dialogue, not character. Fucking bastards.
Back in the 70's the BBC's ethos was to educate the proles. Sort of like the theory of trickle-down economics. Pump out quality programs and hopefully it will seep into the body politic.
Today the BBC has completely given in to the politicians and the press, who accuse it of elitism and being out of touch with the people etc... Thus the BBC is forced to entertain rather than to educate and to compete with commercial crap so it can justify the licence fee.
It is called "going for the lowest common denominator", the reason North American T.V. and movies never came close to U.K.'s !!! Stay the course Britain, demand the higher standards, it's down to you the PEOPLE !
'the reason North American T.V. and movies never came close to U.K.'s !!! '
Generally true, though U.S shows like The Wire, Mad Men and Deadwood are better than almost anything in Britain. The balance is shifting mainly due to the dumbing down of the BBC and the sell out of Channel 4.
This is not good news, don't get me wrong, from Cagney thru McQueen and too many to mention, I love American movies. Perhaps the better directors came from U.K., Kubric, Hitchcock, Loach etc. As well I meant the comment to reflect the T.V. from U.K., you may be right, we see nothing as good as "Cracker" anymore.
@locheelad2 i bash U.S. network TV as much as anyone, but comparing it to the BBC or any other subsidized network is apples and oranges. the major U.S. networks don't give a damn about "good" television, all they care about is making shows that lots of people will watch, whether those people are PHDs or trailer trash, and if you were a network executive, that's all you would care about too. otherwise your board, parent company, or stockholders would be screaming for your job.
From what's happened to British T.V., it is no better than the States now, no more series like "Cracker" will be made, not when the U.K. public will stare at the x-factor, very sad eh?
oooooh, now you've done it. i just watched the first episode of cracker. it's better than most movies. now i'll be lucky if i get out of the house again by april.
@Pittounikos I'm sorry to hear that. Don't let politicians and commentators get away with calling something elitist. What they really mean is the public is too low and dumb to hack it.
6:45 this is my favorite dialogue exchange in the whole series. "... i can't bear the thought of me anymore" i love tiberius' character. he's so sympathetic in this episode.
It's a banal statement - but the acting in this is just so consistently, outstandingly good. I must read the two books again.

@packjim56 Well, I'm only 20, but I first read Claudius at the age of eight, and I never use the philistine gibber-gabber that swamps the Internet.

@Freefalldreams Good for you lad! Very encouraging to hear that. When I was eight, I had difficulty getting through an entire "Dick and Jane" book.

@cuseter being close to attaining my PhD, might I state that I never, ever watch television - it's garbage here in the UK and at home in the USA.
TV is the greatest mind control experiment ever invented - and it works on most people. Sad, isn't it?

@cuseter So wrong though, this is over 30 years old and it is brilliant still today, what do you think the Xfactor re-runs will be worth in 2040?
