Andrew, So now I'm listening to it every night. Btw. The link to the mp3 seems to be broken. I went to "Download This File" and clicked on it. No Download, just an empty file. :( Wha hoppened?
I've been a fan of The H-Lo's, for more than 40 years and as they occurred the Four Freshman, Singers Unlimited, Swingle, etc. But especially the Hi-Lo's were to me, gods. You've done a wonderful job with this recording. I'd love to see the sheet music of the parts. Is there any way I could get a transcription. Please. I play piano and sing. My son graduated from Aaron Copland School of Music in NY. We are music and especially vocal music maniacs. Thank you. Great job. I'm subscribing now. :)
So, Andrew... I have to know... So, everyone is in front of their chroma screen in their own studio. You send them a diagram showing where their light source should be. They all shoot in high def in the same format. Use a pitch pipe to get them started. Use a metronome, so the synch will be perfect when you edit it all together.... They must send you a disc, since their file would be too big to just email to you... Am I close?
@RevJohn Close. We actually recorded all the audio first Tenor 1, then Bass, Tenor 2, Baritone. We sent eachother .wav files. Then I mixed it and about a month later we decided we want to film it using chroma key. I filmed my video first and the other guys used it as reference to film theirs with different colour sheets in the background. Everyone's lighting was different so it just took a lot of video editing post-production to make it work. That's about it.

@AndrewKesler Thanks! Now I can sleep tonight! LOL Pre-recording the audio makes total sense. The post-production work proves that you could give up music and be a hard core video editor or producer. I really love your passion and dedication - it's so refreshing to see in such an apathetic world.
PLEASE DO this with Gene's "Through the Years" !!!!!!!!!!
The technology allows the recording quality to be far better than Hi-Lo's could have ever imagined...I saw them sing this song live in the late 80's, and it was after the concert in the green room, I was standing no more than 10 feet away... ....probably THE BEST singing I've ever heard live. THANKS for doing this! PLEASE POST MORE!
hey Andrew, would you recommend any books or accapella collection sheet music for jazz and soul style harmony? is there any book that you use for practice or something like that?
Hey Andrew. I'm currently attending a high school with an arts program where I am a part of both the choral (vocal) and instrumental music disciplines. For vocal music at the school I am currently only in Concert Choir where I sing tenor, but I'm thinking of becoming involved in smaller vocal ensembles. I see as you are generally a tenor with a falsetto (like myself) that you might have some tips for singing that voice part in an ensemble, specifically jazz, barbershop and more contemporary.
@memejawd Hey man. Well in this video and with my quartet Rendezvous I sing baritone, the second lowest part. Personally, I hate the sound of my own voice, so I've always been one to really focus on blend. Depending on the style of music, I usually sing everything in chest voice that's below E (just above middle C). I can sing higher in chest (usually about a G) but for blend I usually go in mix or falsetto. I don't have a huge low range so I have to work hard to project it so it's strong.
@AndrewKesler Yes blend is very important. Even though I consider myself a strong enough solo singer, it is obvious that a great ensemble is not about its members; its about itself (as selfish as that sounds lol).
Also, since I've been fathoming the idea in my head about starting my own acapella ensemble, but I don't know where to begin. I feel like I might be able to pull together arrangements of potential pieces for the group to sing, but I don't know where to begin besides that. How should I?
@AndrewKesler Man, I could have just written the exact same thing about my voice. PS If the beard's real, you should keep it. It makes you look less like a little boy hahaha. Nice collab btw!
@Blinglover A lot of vocal "multitrackers" that you see online are really into the barbershop or pop scene. Although that's where a lot of people start, there are some of us who have more vocal jazz roots, listening to groups like Singer's Unlimited, New York Voices, Hi-Lo's, Take 6, Manhattan Transfer. Everyone in this video is also a jazz instrumentalist if I'm not mistaken.
Beautiful job, both the execution & the idea: i.e. putting the unjustly neglected Fischer's seminal vocal arrangement out there. One small quibble; it would be a shame if your spectacular effort were at all undercut by a failure to spell his name correctly. It is CLARE; no i. It's a widespread error, printed and reprinted countless times, mostly, though not exclusively, in materials - bios, cd notes, reviews et al - pertaining to the pop & R&B artists whose music he's 'sweetened' over the years.
Good man; would that even a sizable minority of this planet's entities were capable of mimicking your response time. Ah, but I'm too old to be nursing such utopian fantasies; thanks again. BTW, if you're interested in CF, you might want to visit my channel; over the past few months, I've been assembling videos for, among other stuff, some of CF's more remarkable but obscure titles (and when one has to add the adjective 'obscure' to a CF title, we're talking some SERIOUS obscurity).
This vocal arrangement was written by the great jazz pianist/composer/arranger Claire Fischer, who wrote many of the Hi-Lo's early arrangements. He was their accompanist in the late 1950's. Beautiful chart, meticulously sung. Bravi!
Wow, this is so great. I've been a Hi-Lo's nut for years now, and I would give anything to be able to sing it as sweetly as you guys do. I hope you guys can make more of these in the future.
Hey Andrew, you got some killer talent! And you work hard, so respect for that, too. I used to sing with Wibijazz'n' at York U. in the 90s. Andrew Craig founded that group (CBC Radio 2 host) - you should try to hook up with him if you're in the TO area.
Anyhoo, your sexing of the camera gives the Old Spice guy a run for the money. Wait, whut...
@hankfletcher Haha, if you hold your mouse at the top right side of the video at the end, you might find a link to find some secret footage of me "workin'" the camera ;)
But seriously! Thanks a lot! I'll look into that!
@kinomon64 I agree. Sounds wonderful. But you need to wash your mouth out with soap. "Lose the beard", indeed! I wouldn't go so far as to say that facial hair *makes* this video. But... it certainly didn't hurt.
@AndrewKesler Seriously, it looks good. And I think you will find that it works even better as the years go by. I remember, back in my teens, my father and mother *encouraging me* to do a beard. I wouldn't have it. (I think I fancied looking like Spock.) But I've now done a beard for ~27 yrs. I shaved it once. And I felt like I was walking around naked in public.
This is the first of these videos that I have seen, BTW. And the tight harmony is fantastic!
I have always loved the Hi-Lo's and you have done them a great honor. The multiple green screen idea worked well. In the future, you might want to add a background of a sound studio or stage. Thanks for ALL the hard work and the free MP3!
Nice Goatee. And the video is great too. It's always neat to see people who live all over the place doing a collaborative video like this. Keep'em coming!
i didn't recognized you at first with this beard! i liked the song, even though it was kinda slow, but it's not one of your best videos. oh, and remember the Rock Cover to Harry Potter theme song i asked you to help me with? well, the guitar sounds horrible, but the rest is AWESOME! i'll upload it in few days, if you wanna see it(i'm pretty sure you'll like it!)
