Somewhere, in the heavenly deli across the street from the great Brill Building in the sky, over an eternal plate of chopped liver and fried onions, Irving Steinbloom is smiling.
@LazlosPlane I believe this was taken directly from the original PBN broadcast of the uncut concert, which was included as a bonus feature on the DVD. The DVD contains just about every original TV appearance of the bands from the 1960s as well.-- 1b2s
@LazlosPlane This is from an extra on the DVD where they show the entire concert just like it would have been seen by the TV audience. There were a couple of extra songs that didn't make it in the main film.
You had to live through the era (I was 16 at the start, 25 at the end) to notice the satire. Even the lyrics are 60-ish and easy to laugh at....you had to be there. James Taylor once called it The Great Folk Music Scare of the '60s...he understood what it was and why it was destined to not last very long.
The amazing thing about this movie is that it fully transcended the "mocumentaty" genre that Guest created - and became a movie that is too good to be mocked. The viewer cares for the characters, the music and the plot that unrolls - and I have just gone back to this to be with those characters again and again. How is this a parody or "mocumentary"? It is its own thing - a wonderful film….
@wpittock Yes, to a degree you're right, it does indeed transcend "mockumentary." However, the characters are not drawn deep enough to be anything but comedic "types," although the characters of Mitch and Mickey go beyond a simple rendition of these. Mitch is poignant and tragic, Mickey. . . poignant. The others. . . who are they, really. Rather flat in terms of dramaturgy.
They nailed the Folk era peeps. Watched this movie 3 x ... I'm going to now let my copy circulate and buy another one. I have enjoyed all the CG movies I've seen. The only I haven't seen yet is For Your Consideration. This one is my fav, and I didn't think that would be possible because I loved Best in Show.
Christopher Guest and his troupe of funsters can make any mundane topic into a hilarious 'documentary'. "AMW", "Best in Show", "For Your Consideration", and "This is Spinal Tap" are some of the funniest movies ever created. Pity that they're so underrated.
I always wonder which stars are actually playing their insturments and which aren't. I KNOW Guest is an amazing musician but I am not sure about any of the rest.
There are tears in my eye! I must get the DVD. Never did I realize the profound influence of folk music on those who can appreciate it. Thanks for posting this.
@Skyhawkct Maybe someone else mentioned this, but the title: "A Mighty Wind" comes from the late middle ages. Shakespeare used in at least two plays. It means "fart"
This is the raw miked recording from the "show" itself, and it's obvious the mix in the film is quite different and fairly heavily processed. I like this unproduced version better!
I love this end number. It reminds me of my grandpa singing and being on stage myself with my violin group. And the things I used to watch and listen to as a kid thanks to my grandparents and my mom.
the cast of this movie is my favorite bunch of actors/actresses. they're way underrated: who else can improv an entire movie (actually a whole bunch of movies) & pull it off with such aplomb? i'd even go see "king lear" if these guys were doing it.. tho that would put a damper on their improv dialogwise...
The song, a mighty wind: the most life affirming fart joke in the history of music. Plus the final line, 'It's blowing peace and freedom, it's blowing you and me.' ?! - No one else got that?!
Christopher Guest & co, you make the world a better place.
Yep, it's pretty funny that people don't seem to catch on. Even Shakespeare used the phrase "mighty wind" for farting. Nope, this is really one of Guest's weakest films, not nearly as good as Guffman or Best in Show, but I love anything he does.
@79barkingspider So did Geoffrey Chaucer, Kit Marlowe and Sir Franic Bacon. (Literary giants love fart jokes!) But I agree. It's probably not the strongest of his films but I do have a love of roots/folk music so this film atomically gets extra brownie points.
@79barkingspider See, i actually think it's Guest's best film. Course i've always been in the minority in that "Best in Show" is actually my least favourite of the Guest flicks.
When i saw the preview for this i was expecting slap stick comedy making fun of folk music- but its actually an amazingly emotional story that u believe is true... Mitch n Mickey n the final part together made me so sad and happy at the same time- I wanted to laugh and cry like a girl when saw that- and even ol yeller didnt make me cry lol.
Actually there are more than 3 movies - start with Guest's "The Big Picture", then "This is Spinal Tap", "Waiting for Guffman", "Best In show", Mighty Wind (My personal favorite) and finally "For Your Consideration". Can't wait for McKean, Guest and Levy to come out with the next one. Every one of these beats big budget pictures by a mile in terms of creativity.
ummmm I disagree - this and Best in Show actually got excellent reviews, they didn't weren't marketed that strongly. Perhaps 'underappreciated' is the term you're looking for.
Parker Posey is so annoying.
