Musically this is an incerdible perfomance piece. I just love tthe sophistication of the composition and the absurdity of the lyrics and vocals. These guys were incredible.
Memories of growing up, I became a Zappa freak at a young age now 34, I still can't go more than a few hours without crankin' some Frank!! He is was and always will be the greatest composer ever.
i remember 1st time i saw this film -came in after the pub about 20 years ago,and didnt know who zappa was -ROYALLY FUCKED MY HEAD UP!!! - Magic Fingers blew me away.
Hanging above my computer is an original poster of 200 Motels. Thanks for the post. It's better than ever. I remember the first time I saw it back in the early 70's. And one of my favorite drummers, Ansley Dunbar. (Bowie, Journey) Great drumming on Billy the Mountain off of Playground Psychotics.
This reminds me of a Chinese opera. I can't make out the works but I get the message. Very Kafka-like style. The topless girl kept me interested. I like.
@ApollonianKing WHATEVER! I'm sure Zappa thought so, but he was always moving on. Still, it's an example of sixties experiment where the hardware is not as important as the composition. I still kinda feel like a lot of sixties experiments were "captured forever pointlessly." The freshmen had to start somewhere. It led to a new dynamic of taste.
@ApollonianKing "pointless" ? not just that you don't care for this Mothers era, which is your prerogative, but this should've never BEEN ? Certainly Zappa overreached and had to cobble together what he could after they pulled the plug, but... with "pointless" you just negate the effort, as though it was not worth even trying. Burn the manuscripts, paint over the old canvases, erase the tapes, it will never be valuable. With that attitude, any living artist is already a dead man.
My comment was made after watching the movie religiously. I stand by the comment based specifically on the film and Zappa's influence on its overproduction.
@ApollonianKing Why do so many Zappa fans have a problem with the Flo and Eddie years? They are personal favorites of mine cus they were great comedians and they could sing like insane angels. "Rudy Wants to Buy Yez a Drink," "Tears Began to Fall," "Sharleena," "Billy The Mountain" are all awesome songs. So I don't get it..."What's the deal momma?"
I do not believe that Zappa was proud of the film. It was experimental at best. Flo and Eddie were geniuses, but they did not capture the true essense of Zappa. I appreciate your comment.
@ApollonianKing I blame that on the fact that he ran out of money when trying to finish the film. I bet you knew that but I just had restate it. I see the and F&E era as a transformation in Zappa's career. I personally love their singing voice and I think they tell stories better than any of the other Mothers...I always laugh at Bozzio, though.
why is ainsley struggling so bad with the twitching weirdness in his lower lip? this is a pretty simple beat. great song though.

@attilathefun1 He never played on The Muppet Show. He played on SNL. Alice Cooper (Zappa's spawn) played on The Muppet Show, though.
