2. No, the benifits do not outweigh the costs in the long run. I think you're totally missing the point of oil independence. The world could survive for 50 years or more on current reserves. But that means more polution, more drilling, and eventually the same outcome.

Nuclear weapons act as a deterrent to war. Nations (for example, us and russia) are much less likely to invade each other if they think that the retaliation will lead to utter destruction. In fact, no country with a substantial number of nuclear weapons has ever been invaded. This il why Iran wants them. (on another note Nuclear power also provides nearly endless energy. The only reason we don't have more nuclear power plants is because of peoples paranoia.)

The same was said about the strenghtening of military powers before WWII. It was said that since each country was so powerful that neither would want to start a war. That didn't work out. Nuclear weapons in WWII didn't act as a deterrent to war, the Americans just used them to kill many innocent people.

Yes, but the risk now is much greater and we have much more to lose. The situations are not similar enough to use the comparison as final judgement. Also, yes we used nuclear weapons against the Japanese. But my point was that no nation who HAS nuclear weapons has ever been seriously attacked. The japanese did not have them. (besides, the government felt compelled to use them, due to the lower cost in men and so they could justify spending all this money on the project in the first place.)

Nuclear Power is not clean. Not even close. We still don't know what to do with all the nuclear waste we've created. It is not a good solution. It's not paranoia. There's a very good reason why we haven't continued building ne facilities: It's not safe. It creates radioactive waste that doesn't come close to occuring naturally.

The byproduct of nuclear fission is not safe, yes, but it DOES occur naturally. I beleive, (though I'm not sure) that the byproduct is Radon, which was discovered in the early 1900's.
Nuclear waste produced by factories doesn't even occur in great amounts. Do the cost/benifit, benefit wins in this case.
Also, where do you think your trash goes? All that plastic which is artificially created? In one big crap heap behind your city. Nuclear waste would be treated no different.

Ok, I'm going to try to wade through your own contradictions and come up with a response to what you're saying. 1. Radon (which I'm not even sure is the byproduct, but we'll just say it is), since it is an element on the periodic table, occurs naturally (maybe in the sun more than earth, but the sun is a nice place). Carbon dioxide also occurs naturally, but an atmosphere full of that would not be a good thing. And what are great ammounts? A tiny, tiny bit of nuclear waste can contaminate

2. No, the benifits do not outweigh the costs in the long run. I think you're totally missing the point of oil independence. The world could survive for 50 years or more on current reserves. But that means more polution, more drilling, and eventually the same outcome.

But I can tolerate my allies having them because enemies have/try to obtain them too. I think Bush is a moron, but not nearly as bad as people make him out to be. Really, before that question is answered what does Iraq have to do with 9/11... nothing. We invaded a country with no merit to our accusations, where is the weapons of mass destruction that Bush claimed are there and knows where they are. Yet we have failed to produce any evidence that proves Saddam had any or any links to Osama. And when did Iraq attack us? They didn't we "Invaded" another country and lost strong allies.
