When you are down and troubled And you need some loving care And nothing, nothing is going all right Close your eyes and think me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkness night You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I will come running To see you again Winter spring summer or fall All you have to do is call And I will be there
Ofra Haza is very beautiful woman, with brilliant voice. SHALOM FROM POLAND TO JEWISH BROTHERS. This nation is in my heart, because Jesus Christ is my Lord. My family was helping Jews during Second World War, when German soldiers of Adolf Hitler wanted to KILL Jews, and helping them Polish People. Cousin of mu grand mother hide Jew man in her house. After war they was married :) PRAY FOR ISRAEL!
She has such a deep touch in her voice... Hearing her saying these precious words...ya beleive in real freindship, that has no borders, so it can be strong and lovable anywhere around the whole...of course it's not a oneway lane, it takes min. 2!
Just beautiful! The tone in her voice makes me feel like I never have done with any other singer, weird! Calming, nostalgic, emotional, sad.. so weird how her voice singing this makes me feel.. hmm!!
I've never heard such a beautiful, soothing voice before, sounds like an angel!! From the second the song starts with the ''hmm hmm, hmm hmm'' it grabs me from inside! She's a very beautiful woman too. So sad that she isn't alive anymore, seems she had mountains to move! I think that makes this song even more haunting, knowing this beautiful woman with a beautiful voice isn't here anymore, terribly sad! Sorry, I'm just babbling on now. Just never had these mix of feelings from a voice before
I recommend a search of YouTube for Ofra Haza. You will find many song, tributes, clips about her, her marriage and her funeral. Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold) , Latet, Leorech Ha Yam, Deliver Us from The Prince of Egypt, Someone Always Walks With Me are songs that will bowl you over - and you have only just started !!
Always good to see someone discovering Ofra . The World is alee beautiful place without her (a quote) - but we still have her image and her voice.
I watched 'Leorech Ha Yam' and was bowled over by the vocal skill!! She has a similar soft tone to Leona but much more 'womanly' sounding and overall Ofra is a much better singer! Just see some of her albums on 7digital so I'm gonna buy the greatest hits to start me off. By the way, I didn't say it but thanks for posting this video, it's magnificent!!!!!!!!
My pleasure. 'G. Hits' good one to start with. This song is on it. If you can get 'G.Hits 2' you get Montreux live, and most of the unpublished "Queen In Exile" tracks.
Shaday, Ofra Haza (1997), My Soul/Kol Haneshama (which I should have included in my song list above). Kirya and Shirei Molodet (1&2) and 3 - I give my highest recommendation for buying. The 1997 album is my absolute No.1 album. KH my no.1 non-english. Happy listening
vocalskills - the version of Leorech Ha Yam that is in your favourites is the live performance at the memorial concert for P.M. Rabin after his assassination. She preceded the song with the intro to Kol Haneshama. Ofra put all of her heart into this performance - you can see the live emotion in her, the despair at the loss of this man who brought hope for peace and was dashed. This is a very moving video.
I know, that'smy favourite performance of hers I have found so far!! LOVE the way the intro (Kol Haneshema) goes! ''Kol Haneshama-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa'' blimmin fantastic vocals! Just staggered that I have watched about 12 of her videos now and not once has she been off, her phrasing/interpretation is second to none and it seems so far that she is 100% spot on for her pitching.. !!!
You are getting the idea now - yes she was about as near perfection as anybody that I have ever heard.
There was something going around the net about her being capable of 32 harmonic overtones - whatever they are. Check out "Love Song" ... it would be interesting to know if that had basis. Wikipedia removed that claim from her page.
Hmm, overtone singing is where you change the mouth cavity to distinguish all the different notes in the natural harmonic voice. I think 32 overtones is virtually impossible because of the way the voice is harmonized, the first overtone is 1 octave higher, then they go up by factors of 2nds and fifths so to have 32 overtones, she'd need to be harmonized in 14 octaves all at the same time.. I think a Grand Piano only has 10 octaves..
I think they r confusing overtone singing with natural harmonics. The amount of overtones ur voice has defines the tonal quality and timbre. Ofra's tone quality is near perfect so I'd imagine she has a high amount of overtones in her voice. But she doesn't seperate the overtones, they're harmonized naturally in her voice. All sounds are naturally harmonized, there is no such thing as creating 1 pitch, the tone harmonizes itself. in order to create just 1 pitch,u'd need to use electronic beeps.
Interesting. Thanks. I think that some fan was probably hoping to get her into the Guiness Book of Records. Nevertheless Ofra probably had many merits that would qualify entry. The 'raw' acapella "Love Song as on album "Shaday" is the main focus of that claim.
Guiness records, record sales, accolades, awards.. They have no bearing on me. They have become far too generic with absolute shitty artists like Britney Spears getting them here there and everywhere.. I don't like it when people tell me madonna is great because she has x-amount of record sales, awards etc. I like to be the judge of that, not by default of sales. Only 2 kinds of music - the good stuff and the bad stuff. And I must say that Ora is the best I have yet heard in my 21 years.
You echo my feelings totally. Madonna is just a showgirl, Britney a marketing success (Spice Girls did it better).. biggest female record seller,. I heard, is Nana Mouskouri. They called Ofra the "Middle Eastern Madonna" in her home Press. No comparison, except in popularity. Ofra could sing and didn't need to use sex to sell herself , that was against her standards. TV progs..."100 best.." usually miss the very best.
Another dimension is the fundamental difference between Middle-Eastern music and Western music down to scale level. Ofra was easily able to move between the two and you can hear songs that sound - to us - to be in half-tones, perhaps quarter-tones throughout. [Appreciate here that I am scrambling along the bounds of my musical knowledge - but learning ].
God, I know nothing about eastern musical structure but I do appreciate it's different. We have half tones; sharps and flats (depending what key you're in) but not quarter tones. You can hear the transitions in the ''kol haneshama'' intro on Leorech Hayam. Taking to grass roots level, sound waves are measured using hertz, we just don't use them in musical notation in the west. only full & half tones but if you was to listen to, say, a country singer. They use a technique called ''scooping'' ....
Well I've got the greatest hits now, I figured that'd be a good place to start, to get a general idea of her body of work - then venture into the albums! I'll definitely listen to the full version of Kol Haneshama too, love the intro of that on Leorech Hayam!!
I have also constantly said that the video of 'Jerusalem of Gold' is one for everybody 'to make sure see before you die' . For me it is one of THE great musical performances of all time and belongs in the halls of fame. She just got better and better as time went on.
There is a Yahoo Group "ofra-haza" (with the hyphen) who are as near to being her fan club as can be, if you are interested. The group is producing a fanzine as a labour of love - issue 2 out soon. If you want to find out more about the legendary lady herself...join up.
I've got that one in my favourites, discovered it the other day, magnificent!! Also found another from this same show called ''6th Sense'' I adore that one, don't know what the lyrics are saying but with conviction like that you don't need to know, you can feel the hope in her voice!
But keep in mind that for that performance, there was no band visible anywhere, and Ofra had no microphone around her that would get her live voice to the audience. Plus, the crowd was so far away from her that no one would notice the lack of a mic. As nice as it would have been for her to have seen live at the event, I just don't think she did. And if the TV station DID just dub it, then, well, I'd be angry at them, because I would've loved to hear the original audio.
First of all, we're talking about the Yerushalayim Shel Zahav performance - that's the comment I replied to, your comment about Ofra's Yerushalayim Shel Zahav performance, the one everyone needed to see. Remember?
ALSO, to ask me if I have a life is very rude and immature.
Oh, I am sorry, I thought that you were referring to THIS video. I had no way of connecting your comment to J of G (YSZ).
Again - there are various uploads of two TV stations filming of that performance. Try comparing them because I believe that some are redubbed over video recordings, some not.
Also YouTube can slip timing between depending on internet traffic.
Plus, we now know that she was probably not a very well lady by then, about a year into her marriage so had been infected with HIV.
If you click "view all comments", you can see that I replied to your YSZ comment. ;)
Whether she needed a mic or not, the videos that I have seen have the audio coming right into the camera, something that could only be done with a mic.
Would you happen to have the link to any videos that aren't redubbed?
I viewed your comment from the YouTube Email Service link the connection did not show. When i have gone in cold, your comment so so far down the tree it is isolated. So I thought you were pulling my tassle.
Try a search on "Ofra Haza Jerusalem of Gold"
This is better quality clip than one that you have seen v=jxuT-AqH7EM you will see that her 'lip-sync' is so good that she can roll her 'R's in time !!!
Just come down off your high horse and enjoy the performance.
I do enjoy the performance, but I can still have theories about it.
Just because she was lip-sycning to the crowd doesn't means she wasn't singing live. It's very possible that she sang along live, but because she didn't have a microphone, it wasn't audible, and the studio version was played over that. Plus, notice the lack of a band.
ALEE ? - sorry ..a less....beautiful place. If you have to categorise a singer I would group Ofra with Streisand and that other Eurovision 'graduate' Celine Dion. Ofra had more scope to her talent than the former and a much nicer voice than the latter. Ofra could sing the socks off them !!
Barbara Streisand is a good comparison but I think Ofra is miles better than Celine. Dunno why but I have never liked Celine Dion, her voice is way too harsh and she isnt emotionally connected like some other artists
Yes Celine gets all nasal. Ofra had so much power that she never seemed to have a limit to her range, never over-reached herself like many of the popular "screamers"... [mentioning no Careys or Houstons].
Listen to "Ahava". a driving rocky 'power ballad' that other singers would put their tonsils out on stalks for - Ofra does it with a lightness and ease that is as if she is singing along while dusting the furniture !!
Yes, she does reach those higher notes effortlessly and still sounds VERY pleasent. A lot of singers have to belt hard to get those notes and they're voice becomes less harmonic and more shouty. Ofra has beautiful Soprano voice
Whenever I listen to the angelic voice of our dear Ofra Haza, especially this song, I do feel deeply ashamed for the fact that SHE was left to die ALL ALONE! My God! What a shame, what a sin! It is UNFORGIVABLE!
I was looking for James Taylor or Carole King's video version of this great song, but decided that Ofra Haza's version and video here gave it a 'light' that can't be recaptured again...no matter how many times it's done.
Makes me cry everytime, Love Ofra, wish she was still around. Those who dont listen to Ofra because of their religious beleifs, don't deserve her voice. Im above all this religious crap, and i know im a better person because of it.
That is what this video is uploaded for so that people can experience the wonder that was Ofra.
3,500 years ago a volcanic island blew its top off and the few people in the Mediterranean who survived the consequences decided that it was the act of a god. We have lived with the results ever since through the three monotheistic religions.
Ofra had strong beliefs, we should respect that, even if each of ours is different. Ofra breached the divide between the Jews and Arabs and all other cultures.
Ofra Haza was an angel of peace. She was, and still remains through her music and image, an example to us all.
Those who turn away from Ofra because of her culture and her religion have themselves lost the light and are in denial of their own beliefs. If they were strong they would accept and welcome her for who she was. Then they would be open to the beauty of her voice.
Search for other video clips of Ofra Haza on YouTube. Enjoy them. The love of Ofra Haza should be spread worldwide.

i believe no one on this earth has ever been as talented as her.. this is a very pretty song, but her deep, spiritual songs are the ones that tell me she was really something out of this world. no one can move me like ofra haza's voice does...
Simply put she had the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.....She is remembered daily and has left a mark on my heart for ever. RIP Israel's Angel....
I think one of THE great female singing voices of the 20th century and the greatest talent. When you discover the breadth of Ofra's limitless repertoire, her vocal range, the phenomenal number of languages that she could sing in and, as here, her genius for expression, interpreting and presenting a song. She could take even a dull song and make it sparkle.
I don't know what you mean. Ofra's "downfall" was that she was pressured by members of her family as she approached 40, and by her own desire for children, into getting married. Sadly she picked the wrong man. He was her 'downfall',either by allegedly infecting her with HIV or arranging the quack treatment that killed her. There are, undoubtedly, a few thousand (or million) men in this world who would have given everything for a chance to be this lovely woman's husband.
It is for us to take care of Ofra Haza's memory on earth. She was the most talented singer of her time. Thanks to YouTube it is possible for her fans to keep her music from being forgotten and even to be discovered by a new audience. She was an angel of peace - it would do well for all in the Middle-East to look to her example and make peace in her memory.

Ofra got married as she was turning 40 years.
Her husband infected her with HIV. She died 23rd February 2000 of total organ failure.
I only found that out just as I had rediscovered her on CD after many years of not hearing of her, then looked her up on the internet - too late.
There are many uploads about her on YouTube covering most years of her career, the wedding, the funeral, the tributes.
Dry your tears and enjoy the music - she will move you to tears sometimes with her talent.

She has such a deep touch in her voice... Hearing her saying these precious words...ya beleive in real freindship, that has no borders, so it can be strong and lovable anywhere around the whole...of course it's not a oneway lane, it takes min. 2!

I agree with knjgsy. you can compare ofra's singing with Streisand or Celine but not here voice (because of its uncommon hamonics richness)

Just beautiful! The tone in her voice makes me feel like I never have done with any other singer, weird! Calming, nostalgic, emotional, sad.. so weird how her voice singing this makes me feel.. hmm!!
vocalskills 2 years ago
It is not that weird when you get to know the phenomenon that was Ofra Haza. It is that thing that her long-time fans know about - she was the best.

KNJGSY 2 years ago
I watched 'Leorech Ha Yam' and was bowled over by the vocal skill!! She has a similar soft tone to Leona but much more 'womanly' sounding and overall Ofra is a much better singer! Just see some of her albums on 7digital so I'm gonna buy the greatest hits to start me off. By the way, I didn't say it but thanks for posting this video, it's magnificent!!!!!!!!
vocalskills 2 years ago
My pleasure. 'G. Hits' good one to start with. This song is on it. If you can get 'G.Hits 2' you get Montreux live, and most of the unpublished "Queen In Exile" tracks.
Shaday, Ofra Haza (1997), My Soul/Kol Haneshama (which I should have included in my song list above). Kirya and Shirei Molodet (1&2) and 3 - I give my highest recommendation for buying. The 1997 album is my absolute No.1 album. KH my no.1 non-english. Happy listening
KNJGSY 2 years ago
vocalskills - the version of Leorech Ha Yam that is in your favourites is the live performance at the memorial concert for P.M. Rabin after his assassination. She preceded the song with the intro to Kol Haneshama. Ofra put all of her heart into this performance - you can see the live emotion in her, the despair at the loss of this man who brought hope for peace and was dashed. This is a very moving video.
KNJGSY 2 years ago
I know, that'smy favourite performance of hers I have found so far!! LOVE the way the intro (Kol Haneshema) goes! ''Kol Haneshama-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa'' blimmin fantastic vocals! Just staggered that I have watched about 12 of her videos now and not once has she been off, her phrasing/interpretation is second to none and it seems so far that she is 100% spot on for her pitching.. !!!
vocalskills 2 years ago
You are getting the idea now - yes she was about as near perfection as anybody that I have ever heard.
There was something going around the net about her being capable of 32 harmonic overtones - whatever they are. Check out "Love Song" ... it would be interesting to know if that had basis. Wikipedia removed that claim from her page.
KNJGSY 2 years ago
Hmm, overtone singing is where you change the mouth cavity to distinguish all the different notes in the natural harmonic voice. I think 32 overtones is virtually impossible because of the way the voice is harmonized, the first overtone is 1 octave higher, then they go up by factors of 2nds and fifths so to have 32 overtones, she'd need to be harmonized in 14 octaves all at the same time.. I think a Grand Piano only has 10 octaves..
vocalskills 2 years ago
I think they r confusing overtone singing with natural harmonics. The amount of overtones ur voice has defines the tonal quality and timbre. Ofra's tone quality is near perfect so I'd imagine she has a high amount of overtones in her voice. But she doesn't seperate the overtones, they're harmonized naturally in her voice. All sounds are naturally harmonized, there is no such thing as creating 1 pitch, the tone harmonizes itself. in order to create just 1 pitch,u'd need to use electronic beeps.
vocalskills 2 years ago
Interesting. Thanks. I think that some fan was probably hoping to get her into the Guiness Book of Records. Nevertheless Ofra probably had many merits that would qualify entry. The 'raw' acapella "Love Song as on album "Shaday" is the main focus of that claim.
KNJGSY 2 years ago
Guiness records, record sales, accolades, awards.. They have no bearing on me. They have become far too generic with absolute shitty artists like Britney Spears getting them here there and everywhere.. I don't like it when people tell me madonna is great because she has x-amount of record sales, awards etc. I like to be the judge of that, not by default of sales. Only 2 kinds of music - the good stuff and the bad stuff. And I must say that Ora is the best I have yet heard in my 21 years.
vocalskills 2 years ago
You echo my feelings totally. Madonna is just a showgirl, Britney a marketing success (Spice Girls did it better).. biggest female record seller,. I heard, is Nana Mouskouri. They called Ofra the "Middle Eastern Madonna" in her home Press. No comparison, except in popularity. Ofra could sing and didn't need to use sex to sell herself , that was against her standards. TV progs..."100 best.." usually miss the very best.
KNJGSY 2 years ago
Another dimension is the fundamental difference between Middle-Eastern music and Western music down to scale level. Ofra was easily able to move between the two and you can hear songs that sound - to us - to be in half-tones, perhaps quarter-tones throughout. [Appreciate here that I am scrambling along the bounds of my musical knowledge - but learning ].
KNJGSY 2 years ago
God, I know nothing about eastern musical structure but I do appreciate it's different. We have half tones; sharps and flats (depending what key you're in) but not quarter tones. You can hear the transitions in the ''kol haneshama'' intro on Leorech Hayam. Taking to grass roots level, sound waves are measured using hertz, we just don't use them in musical notation in the west. only full & half tones but if you was to listen to, say, a country singer. They use a technique called ''scooping'' ....
vocalskills 2 years ago
.... Where they begin a note slightly below the pitch and scoop up into it. We don't notate these notes but they would be considered a quarter tone.
vocalskills 2 years ago
Well I've got the greatest hits now, I figured that'd be a good place to start, to get a general idea of her body of work - then venture into the albums! I'll definitely listen to the full version of Kol Haneshama too, love the intro of that on Leorech Hayam!!
vocalskills 2 years ago

Also found another from this same show called ''6th Sense'' I adore that one, don't know what the lyrics are saying but with conviction like that you don't need to know, you can feel the hope in her voice!
vocalskills 2 years ago
But she lip-synced that performance. :(
rpvee 2 years ago
I believe that the sound on this clip was overdubbed from the CD because of poor sound reproduction. May have been mono.
So you cannot tell from this whether she 'lip-synced' in the show it or not.
It is her voice that you hear, that is what matters.
I'm just thankful that those of us who are outside of Israel have got the chance to see it.
KNJGSY 2 years ago
But keep in mind that for that performance, there was no band visible anywhere, and Ofra had no microphone around her that would get her live voice to the audience. Plus, the crowd was so far away from her that no one would notice the lack of a mic. As nice as it would have been for her to have seen live at the event, I just don't think she did. And if the TV station DID just dub it, then, well, I'd be angry at them, because I would've loved to hear the original audio.
rpvee 2 years ago
Now you have lost me completely...
Do you have a life ?
KNJGSY 2 years ago
First of all, we're talking about the Yerushalayim Shel Zahav performance - that's the comment I replied to, your comment about Ofra's Yerushalayim Shel Zahav performance, the one everyone needed to see. Remember?
ALSO, to ask me if I have a life is very rude and immature.
rpvee 2 years ago
Oh, I am sorry, I thought that you were referring to THIS video. I had no way of connecting your comment to J of G (YSZ).
Again - there are various uploads of two TV stations filming of that performance. Try comparing them because I believe that some are redubbed over video recordings, some not.
Also YouTube can slip timing between depending on internet traffic.
Plus, we now know that she was probably not a very well lady by then, about a year into her marriage so had been infected with HIV.
KNJGSY 2 years ago
Again, we are lucky to be able to see that performance. I wish that the Israeli TV companies would issue it on DVD using their master recordings.
I take it to be a live performance. Did she need a microphone ? Legend is that Ofra could fill a theatre with the power of her voice.
in the bigger picture does your criticism have a real point to it ?
KNJGSY 2 years ago
If you click "view all comments", you can see that I replied to your YSZ comment. ;)
Whether she needed a mic or not, the videos that I have seen have the audio coming right into the camera, something that could only be done with a mic.
Would you happen to have the link to any videos that aren't redubbed?
rpvee 2 years ago
I viewed your comment from the YouTube Email Service link the connection did not show. When i have gone in cold, your comment so so far down the tree it is isolated. So I thought you were pulling my tassle.
Try a search on "Ofra Haza Jerusalem of Gold"
This is better quality clip than one that you have seen v=jxuT-AqH7EM you will see that her 'lip-sync' is so good that she can roll her 'R's in time !!!
Just come down off your high horse and enjoy the performance.
.
KNJGSY 2 years ago
I do enjoy the performance, but I can still have theories about it.
Just because she was lip-sycning to the crowd doesn't means she wasn't singing live. It's very possible that she sang along live, but because she didn't have a microphone, it wasn't audible, and the studio version was played over that. Plus, notice the lack of a band.

When you get to CD3 you will be in ecstasy then ... and you will discover the exquisite "Yad Anuga".

KNJGSY 2 years ago
Barbara Streisand is a good comparison but I think Ofra is miles better than Celine. Dunno why but I have never liked Celine Dion, her voice is way too harsh and she isnt emotionally connected like some other artists
vocalskills 2 years ago
Yes Celine gets all nasal. Ofra had so much power that she never seemed to have a limit to her range, never over-reached herself like many of the popular "screamers"... [mentioning no Careys or Houstons].
Listen to "Ahava". a driving rocky 'power ballad' that other singers would put their tonsils out on stalks for - Ofra does it with a lightness and ease that is as if she is singing along while dusting the furniture !!
KNJGSY 2 years ago
Yes, she does reach those higher notes effortlessly and still sounds VERY pleasent. A lot of singers have to belt hard to get those notes and they're voice becomes less harmonic and more shouty. Ofra has beautiful Soprano voice

eqgmrdbz 3 years ago 3
That is what this video is uploaded for so that people can experience the wonder that was Ofra.
3,500 years ago a volcanic island blew its top off and the few people in the Mediterranean who survived the consequences decided that it was the act of a god. We have lived with the results ever since through the three monotheistic religions.
Ofra had strong beliefs, we should respect that, even if each of ours is different. Ofra breached the divide between the Jews and Arabs and all other cultures.
KNJGSY 3 years ago
Ofra Haza was an angel of peace. She was, and still remains through her music and image, an example to us all.
Those who turn away from Ofra because of her culture and her religion have themselves lost the light and are in denial of their own beliefs. If they were strong they would accept and welcome her for who she was. Then they would be open to the beauty of her voice.
Search for other video clips of Ofra Haza on YouTube. Enjoy them. The love of Ofra Haza should be spread worldwide.

KNJGSY 3 years ago

Maybe that was part of her downfall, 'you've got a friend'. RIP, Ofra.
garibaum3 3 years ago
I don't know what you mean. Ofra's "downfall" was that she was pressured by members of her family as she approached 40, and by her own desire for children, into getting married. Sadly she picked the wrong man. He was her 'downfall',either by allegedly infecting her with HIV or arranging the quack treatment that killed her. There are, undoubtedly, a few thousand (or million) men in this world who would have given everything for a chance to be this lovely woman's husband.
