Also nice to see so many people who have been recently exposed to any type of 'classical' music; and they are really enjoying this music! So much great stuff out there
Debussy is definitely worth studying! He's got a lot of accessible music for late intermediate students; once you adapt to his writing, it just unlocks such a large amount of music that will be accessible to the ear (and to play if you play the piano!). One of the composers whose music has done a lot for me over the years :)
The Ballade is incredible, haven't listened to it in a while!
This is an interesting interpretation -- this piece is supposed to be an output of the "early Romantic" Debussy, but the pianist brings out a lot of impressionistic textures and phrases. I wish that others would take this approach with Chopin (he was decades ahead of his time), but modern pianism seems intent on melodicizing him to death.
debussi turned me over to classical...i heard some classical before, though I hate most of the anoying type, this, relaxing type is just...well...music to my ears, debussy, chopin, beethoven....lovely
This piece is so evocative - its floating melodies and arpeggios made me think of Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willows" - drifting gently down the river...which is why I think the accompanying painting is so appropriate.
Thanks for posting Debussy's full piano works - although unfortunately I cannot seem to find No. 1 of the "Images Oubliees".
I think this is the summit of piano music....all the qualities come together after almost 200 years since the instrument's invention. Just how I feel at least :)
I love this piece so much, and it is played so beautifully here. I'm 15 years old and a keen pianist, I love impressionism and I am learning this piece :) thank you
Debussy music was considered very strange for his time. It was impressionistic while he was still in the Romantic period. He was the leading composer in impressionistic music just as Van Gogh was in painting. Or so that is what I remember learning in music history class :D
Correct me if I am wrong, but what I heard that nobody liked his piece because it was as strange as Van Gogh. Is that true according through music history?
Many thanks for posting this... I am relatively new to classical music, but now I am listening to Debussy and Chopin a lot.
And for this piece... What can I say... What a precious gem. I can't judge it for its musical merits, I have no relevant background whatsoever, but it really gets to me...

The ballada is a Polish dance, that's why the Polish composer Chopin also composed ballades

Slave is French for Slavic, referring to east-european countries.
JujuForTheWin 4 months ago 2
"Slavic", rather; a reference to its supposedly Russian conception.
TheWanderingNight 5 months ago
the title really means 'slave' ?
breekwhal 5 months ago
@breekwhal no. The subtitle for it is "slave." I believe it means slave as in slow and meaningful. Not the english word.

Incredible that Debussy only composed this one Ballade, such a beautiful piece. But, at least he composed many other great works.

Absolutely gorgeous! And I'm glad to see that I'm not the only pianist who doesn't keep a strict tempo for Debussy.

The rubato has such wonderful flexibility. and the dynamic range is colorful, highlighting the apex of phrases while sweeping the listener along!
Who is the performer? Is it Francois-Joel Thiollier as suggested below?
