Let me set the record straight about the size of the people who went into these tunnels.I was 6ft and 165 lbs and for the most part had no problem getting in those spaces.I was in one tunnel that was sooooo small that when I was on my back the roof was onle 4-6 inches from my face! no I'm a Vietnamese living in Vn , and I heard them say that : these tunnels were built in the time fighting the American soldiers , maybe in the 60s , not the French , cos it's no use against the French which is much weaker than American . And the Vietcong built it day and night :)

2 tunnel complexes I was involved with were huge!They probably took 20 years to complete.They were assembly areas prior to Tet,then abandoned.They were about 400 yards apart.Each went 100-150 ft under ground and had multiple levels and entrances.This was spring of 68.C4Steve...Combat Engineer/tunnel rat.
We made sure the tunnels were indeed empty.There were 3 VC killed in the process.Why they were even there I have no idea..We did find some weapons and medical supplies.We blew everything up,including the 3 bodies.We then dragged cratering charges through out the complex and blew the whole thing up.End of story .Except for the memories...C4Steve
The VC did go back in after we left...how do we know? We started finding some of the demo buried in the local roads.We had lot numbers from the cratering charges we dragged into the tunnels.Some did not explode in the tunnels and we got the numbers from them.The VC had their share of guts too.We never went back to investigate the damage to the tunnels.Alot did collapse,but some of it did not.C4Steve

most of them were small guys. after the war the vietnamese made some of the tunnels larger so they could give tours in them. some tunnels are still unsafe.
Time takes it's toll.Most tunnels were not made to last forever.They need constant maintenenance to not cave in.The tunnels I was involved with had no timbers to shore up the roof or walls.They just cave in.One tunnel I went in went 100ft under ground!!There is no need to keep them open now.Just a couple for people to see.C4Steve
I just got back from Vietnam. Beautiful country and amazing people. I've seen those traps and tunnels now in person (I have a picture of me at 1:14 doing the same thing) and can't even imagine what it would have been like to be a soldier and worry about those horrific devices on top of everything else. @TheA340guy Do you know that after American withdrow all troops in 1972 after Paris Peace Treaty, Vietcong with help from North Vietnam still found and killed more than 2M Vietnamese till 1975 and in reeducation camps in tropical forest? Vietcong didn't protect my homeland. Vietcong fought for their communist ideology, under the control of The Third International. I admire all American soldiers who fought and died for freedom of Vietnam. God blesses their families.

I, as many others have learned from the past, and as the old saying goes, "those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it." Personally, I have no such intentions. Back in 1970, I took a friend of mine who was a pacifist and walked him through the anit-war centers and waited for him in court as he got his deferment. Anyway, take care of yourself.

Let me set the record straight about the size of the people who went into these tunnels.I was 6ft and 165 lbs and for the most part had no problem getting in those spaces.I was in one tunnel that was sooooo small that when I was on my back the roof was onle 4-6 inches from my face! I still have nightmares about that!! It was guts,not size that mattered.Some of my buddies refused to go in.Better they stay on top then to go in and freak out.C4Steve

My husband was a tunnel rat in the year 1972. And believe me it wasn't a fun thing to go down in the tunnel by yourself with only a hand gun to defend yourself. That's how he earned his bronze star with a V.

we did have special units that did go down in the tunnels. the reason the tunnels were small is because most of the V.C. and the N.V.A. were small people

No excuses, but as I said, at the time, the war had barely begun, and very few people stateside even knew how this mess was going to evolve. I'm glad we touched base again. I reacted strongly, I know, and for that I apologize. I guess the memories of those holes are still with me. that i could not tell you i just do not know. i guess it depends how many were digging the tunnels. there were a lot of them. . i think they had them when they were fighting the French.

no I'm a Vietnamese living in Vn , and I heard them say that : these tunnels were built in the time fighting the American soldiers , maybe in the 60s , not the French , cos it's no use against the French which is much weaker than American . And the Vietcong built it day and night :)

@tranhoanghuan My book about the tunnel rats says that the tunnels were begun by the Viet Minh for use against the French but it was a skeleton complex compared to the kms and kms dug in the 60s

2 tunnel complexes I was involved with were huge!They probably took 20 years to complete.They were assembly areas prior to Tet,then abandoned.They were about 400 yards apart.Each went 100-150 ft under ground and had multiple levels and entrances.This was spring of 68.C4Steve...Combat Engineer/tunnel rat.

We made sure the tunnels were indeed empty.There were 3 VC killed in the process.Why they were even there I have no idea..We did find some weapons and medical supplies.We blew everything up,including the 3 bodies.We then dragged cratering charges through out the complex and blew the whole thing up.End of story .Except for the memories...C4Steve

The VC did go back in after we left...how do we know? We started finding some of the demo buried in the local roads.We had lot numbers from the cratering charges we dragged into the tunnels.Some did not explode in the tunnels and we got the numbers from them.The VC had their share of guts too.We never went back to investigate the damage to the tunnels.Alot did collapse,but some of it did not.C4Steve

we never went into the tunnels. if we found any we called in the tunnel rats. they were trained to enter tunnels.
most of them were small guys. after the war the vietnamese made some of the tunnels larger so they could give tours in them. some tunnels are still unsafe.

Time takes it's toll.Most tunnels were not made to last forever.They need constant maintenenance to not cave in.The tunnels I was involved with had no timbers to shore up the roof or walls.They just cave in.One tunnel I went in went 100ft under ground!!There is no need to keep them open now.Just a couple for people to see.C4Steve

I just got back from Vietnam. Beautiful country and amazing people. I've seen those traps and tunnels now in person (I have a picture of me at 1:14 doing the same thing) and can't even imagine what it would have been like to be a soldier and worry about those horrific devices on top of everything else. You sir, have my respect.

Thanks for posting this vid!! I was a Combat Engineer/Tunnel Rat with the 9th ID Nov67-Nov68.I don't think a day goes by that I don't remember.We were so young.We just did what needed doing and did it well.I am proud.Steve
