It happened during the 1993 or 1994 red flag operation (he can't remember exactly), and they dismantled the ECM (electronic counter measurement) of the plane, to be precise. Since then, France has commandos at every red flag operation, just to guard the jets during the night... No offence to the USA meant though. This stuff seems easy, but its so extremely tough to become any kind of military pilot in France.
Just the medical exams are, I have to say, exagerated.
The USA has much easier medicals, especially concerning ophtalmology.
I guess that they have more planes for pilots and so less sifting thru candidates.
Those planes are so expensive I understand France wants only the best in them.
Cant remember the stats in French Airforce, like 40 guys on the ground for 1 pilot in the air or more...

It happened during the 1993 or 1994 red flag operation (he can't remember exactly), and they dismantled the ECM (electronic counter measurement) of the plane, to be precise. Since then, France has commandos at every red flag operation, just to guard the jets during the night... No offence to the USA meant though. Just explaining that the US wouldn't spy on that plane if it "sucked" as much as rishi65 said...

@psimino Sorry but your 'fighter pilot' may have been watching or playing too many flying video games. I was a pilot in the USAF at the time with access to sensitive data. Your "pilot" story is just that - a story with no basis in fact. F16 alwyas had state of the art ECM system. There is no way anyone would have tried (or wanted to) 'dismantle' same in a French airplane or any other for that matter.

@psimino The red flag is a bit of fun. I've attended three. Yes, French pilots are good but they don't get any other chances to show it because their military is flat broke. Simple truth is that France can't afford to fight in real wars these days. Their planes sit on the ground 99% of the time, I know this as a fact. You may not like it, but it's true.

Know I didn't fly with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the same unit that flew into the Osama raid? Served under then Col. Brad Webb, the now General that coordinated the raid? As far as frogs serving overseas, the only time I saw a SINGLE french troop was transient in Al Udeid, Qatar
