All very good players who play as one. However, I feel this is slightly lacking in the accent and rhythm, notably the syncopations like ties, etc. Here they tend to gloss over them. the sound is good. the frisr violin needs to lead more and dominate sometimes.
I have always wanted to play this piece and am considering bringing my cello up to school to play it next year. Any violinists/violists in STL that wants to play it with me let me know :)
I'm not really a Debussy fan but this single piece by him just blows me away every time I listen to it. Fantastic work on his part. Thank you for posting.
I Love Debussy because unlike the early romantic era musicians, you cannot anticipate his progressions. Just when you think you know where a passage of notes it taking you, it suddenly pulls left or right. It's beautiful.
Not that earlier music of Chopin, Beethoven, and Schubert is not equally great, just different.
Definitely with you there... Debussy NEVER went for the obvious... those earlier geniuses occasionally did as they were following the traditional forms and cadences of Haydn.
Debussy has incredible imagination and originality in his work... he evoked more nuance and vivid imagery than anyone before him (that I've heard). I always considered Beethoven or Mozart my all time favorites, but the more Debussy I hear, the more mystified I am by his craft.
yeah, love this piece as well. another i love is ravel's string quartet. i had the honor of hearing the shanghai string quartet, in my opinion the best out there today, play it last summer. truly extraordinary.
This is so heartbreakingly gorgeous. I greatly appreciate what you do. Unfortunately, whenever I try to find a recording of this piece all I can find is his quartet g minor.
ok.... in many american movies you can hear: "i just go to the old continent", or "europe is good, but its old, powerless, dead,"...it seems the America has the real culture and we are just zombies..
The Europeans are the best classical musicians. Most of the world-renown artists originate from there. It also has to be agreed that Europe is still the capital of classical music.
I really hope that my quartet can sound THIS good soon. my schools been deprived of one, so its just starting now, and i <3 Debussy, so hopefully we'll be able to do something like this soon.
Beautiful. Wonderous tone. Very good internal communication in this group. My GOD it's wonderful to listen to a well interpreted quartet. Inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
my fav piece and I really like the approach. It would be so different to hear this live or on CD. I love how they sweep the delicate feeling at 2:27 up to aggressive tutti just a few measures later. Bravo!
I wish the camera focused more on the group as a whole rather than the individual instruments. It would be nice to see more of how the four of them interact.
The music and the musicians are great, but who the hell directed the video? I don't think the shots line up with the music at all. It makes the cameraman look like a fool. Also, the red in the violin's dress is a bit too distracting.
I carefully watched this again after reading your post and must say that I do not agree with you about the camera work. I've seen much worse than this and since this is close up and panning technique it can be said that a good job was done featuring especially the lead violin and cello at key moments and always pans out for the group strokes. Also may I say that if you're distracted by a red dress you're not listening!
@Alcivarus That's right. Who gives a heck? It's friggin' Debussy. Listen to the music. Also, I know it's not Dvorak and stuff, but you'll get over it.
Is it in the performance notes for players not to sit in the traditional positions or is it just the Cypress string quartet doing it? like from left to right, violin, violin, viola, cello
I love Debussy don't get mar wrong, but his style in opinion, lends itself much better to piano and vocal pieces.

Difficult... very difficult... well It was for me. I'm sure 99% of you played it perfectly when you were 10 without reading the music.

People prefer Ravel's quartet over this.
Frankly, I don't know why. This quartet is perfect.
MusicaRicercata 1 year ago
it reminds me of jazz
Joebzzz 2 years ago
Indeed, the music of the Impressionists (Debussy, Ravel, and others) were the inspirations for early Jazz composers like Gershwin.

Cypress String Quartet has a CD out with a recording of Ravel's quartet. They have Debussy down here, but their Ravel isn't the best.

@MrSonicHater
Apostrophe's are quite important in the above sentence.
"THAT SHITS DOPE" implies the act of defecation of cannabis, while "THAT SHIT'S DOPE" merely observes that the above video is in fact "dope."
