It's so different now. Players don't want to get hit and with spin and bullshit until they see an opening while these guys just fucking threw the punches until they took your head off. Very different times
The Magneson/Cashman fight was incredible. Magneson was an animal, but Cashman stood toe to toe. In the Gillis fight, Gillis' arm was just a blur. O'Reilly made his opponent practically come off the ice with his punches. Scary stuff. And let me just say that if you go in against Schultz, you WILL get hurt...win or lose, he'll hurt you.
@belair55zz56 You are talking about Apples and Oranges here. Robinson could fight if he had to, Rolph couldn't fight for crap and was not noted as a guy who would drop the gloves.
@MrRob7004 I am not a kid, I lived through this era in hockey. When someone like Shultz is beating the crap out of a non-fighter like Rolph, you step in and break it up. I am not sure if you ever played hockey, but you play for each other and you protect each other, the Rangers NEVER did that. The only ones that had any balls on that team were Park, Giacomin and Hatfield. The rest were pussies.
@mrceebees14 I have to agree. I was a major Rangers fan when I was a kid and it's true, the Rangers should NEVER have let Rolph take that beating. And a beating it was. Rolph had no business going in against Schultz, but i do wish Park had gone in to at least obsruct to help his line mate.
@krametorg You might not remember this (hardly any one does it was such a long time ago) but Park was already pretty banged up from fighting Shultz at the Garden earlier in this series. Giacomin even went after Barber and Barber did nothing to him, it was just a very intense game and the Rangers were literally being intimidated right out of the playoffs.
The Flyers were scary, I know they scared me when I saw them at the Coliseum, and that was when the Isles were tough mother fuckers.
@mrceebees14 I'm starting to get gray around the ears so I do remember. I loved Park because he was tough. Ah...old time hockey. The good old days. Magneson: Is there a better fighter than that guy? I grew up in Chicago...I love him too. But Schultz takes the cake for toughness.
@krametorg Clarke Gillies was better then both of them, he is regarded as arguably the best fighter of all time. Ironic you mention Shultz though, because that was Gillies most famous fight, Gillies beat the tar out of Shultz at the Spectrum in front of a packed house. To add insult to injury, Gillies was a rookie that year.
@mrceebees14 I remember the Isles and Gillies...but don't remember his fighting prowess. But I'll take your word for it. Cools stuff tho. I love watching the vintage hockey. I just wish NHL Network would play some of the games rather than 4 months of playoff repeats. Enough already.
@MrRob7004 Kid? ha I wish, I have been watching the sport for 35 years. Read what I just wrote, why do you think they created the third man in rule over 30 years ago? To stop donny brooks from breaking out, because in the end, 20 physically strong young men are NOT going to be stopped by a few refs if they don't want to stop.
@MrRob7004 Not when you are getting the shit beat out of your that bad, you must be new to the sport or not know the history. The reason they made the "third man in" rule ions ago was because third parties would jump in to help a guy out whether he was winning or losing, so you are wrong pal.
Rolph was not a fighter, he was a steady stand at home D-man who played some really good hockey with the Kings before going to the Rangers. But Rolph poked him and Shultz too exception.

As much as I hated the Rangers, Fotiu was tough and didn't back down.
I also like that he knew how it felt to be a poor hockey fan and not have the money to see a game so he would toss pucks in the upper decks.

And the Rangers just stood there and no one came to Rolph's aid.
The Rangers suck.

@mrceebees14 And when Schultz was getting his ass kicked by Larry Robinson everyone rescued him.

@MrRob7004 Nice try, not the fact here at all. In hockey if a guy is getting the snot beat out of him that bad, you jump in for your friends.
The Rangers were pussies back then and the Flyers saw that they wouldn't stick up for each other, so they got jumped.
THE RANGERS ARE PUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS

@mrceebees14 Look kid this was a time when men were men.nobody wanted someone to jump in and fight there battles.
