Good for the history of the kind of loving seekers of the trying kings
monkey tribes called here were actually trained monkeys to fight war fare , such as shooting arrows .........
elephants were trained to charge with or without influence of alcohol,
fighters were men n they were trained n deliviring the fights
why do u think those cow boys r the best coz they were n maybe r good at training horses only!!!!!!!!!! never ignore the greater intellects of those times
This movie is brilliant, i watched bits of it when it was just released but was to young to apprecate it at the time. The acting by Anthony Hopkins was outstanding! Very good film, with many powerful scenes like this last one. Makes you believe anybody is capable of greatness if they have the spirit to follow their dreams to the end of the world.
The movie is underrated. Anthony Hopkin's role as as elderly Ptolemy was great. The movie is NOT about Alexander's battles, but his LIFE. Alexander the Great was not just some stereotypical warrior king who cut people to pieces etc - he was a man who loved, cried and showed emotions.
Megos Alexandros!!! Alexander had achieved what he wanted. He will be remembered as King of Asia and a Great Man. Long live memory of Alexander of Makedonia!!!! (+)

What made Alexander great wasnt that he was a great general. He was a great general but he was great because he didnt really look at himself as a king and all others were his subjects to rule. He looked at his subjects(especially his soldiers) as brothers. He led them personally in battle. Not many kings personally lead troops in battle. He was proad to lead them and die with them if neccisary. Thats probably how he would have like to have died but unfortunitly he never got that chance
I dont understand why they decided to have Ptolemy(Hopkins) say that He and the others killed Alexander? That is only speculation. There is no proof. He could have died from malaria or west Nile Virus or a number of things. They said that it took Alexander at least a week to die. There wasnt really any poisons available back then that could have taken that long. But who really knows? Why would they kill him in the first place? He took his army home like they asked. What more did they want?
@Destoryer86 Well he was planning a campaign in Arabia before he died, and he did kill Cleitus and Philotas for reasons that were very questionable. Alexander was still a great man though, and nothing can be argued against that.
@Alexandros1294. Good point. while I dont think they really cared about Philotas. He was pompus and arrogant and got into conflict with Alexander and the other generals at times.Cleitus however, who was popular among the generals and was one of Alexanders closest friends was killed in a drunken fight. Alexander would later regret killing his friend in a drunken fight. The other generals probably started to see that alexander is uncontrollable and one of them could be next when hes drunk.
@Destoryer86 People weren't too happy about the death of Parmenion either. However, they understood it was necessary with the death of Philotas. How can you kill someone's son and let the father live? Parmenion had complete control of the supply lines.
@Alexandros1294 True, But Im sure they understood that it was neccesary to kill Parmenion. No way would he stay loyal after hearing his son was killed. He had control of a large army and was in control of the suply lines. It was too dangerous to allow him to live
@Destoryer86 I think he might mean it in that... they 'let' him die through their actions/inactions so it was their fault? Because they didn't really believe in his vision etc. etc. They wanted the power, they felt threatened, they didn't stop him from his self-destructive actions... In that sense they killed him, because they were responsible for his 'safety' but they never really tried enough...
and if his attempt to reconcile Greeks and barbarians ended in failure? Oh .. What a beautiful bust! The failure of it surpassed the successes of other men. All will be in the shadow world beyond and his name will live forever in history as the brightest light of youth, strong forever and ever inspiring ... Alexander the Great!
@makedonserb Macedonia is Greek. Ancient Macedonian Coins call him "Basileus Alexandros" which means King Alexander in Greek. Did I mention they were printed during his reign? It is Megas Alexandros, or more correctly ΜΕΓΑΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ. Fucking Fyromian dumbass.
@Aleksandar1294 actually retard, his father was vasileus, that was his first name, and in macedonian that means vo sil , which means with power, and ilios an ancient god of the sun, alexander was called philhellene, which means friend of greeks, which means he is not greek because he cant be greek and friend of greek, he is barbarian friend of greek, barbarian meaning not greek. philip conquered greece, alexander united it to fight and conquer persia. U r from gaylada not makedonia.
@makedonserb No, dumbass. His father was Philip, or Philippos, and Alexander the Great was not called Philhellene, and that was Alexander I who was called Philhellene. He wasn't called "Friend of Greeks" because he wasn't Greek, it was because he deserted the Persian side and went over to the Athenian Side.
@makedonserb Alexander called himself Greek all the time. Read the letter he sent to Darius replying to Darius' peace offer. Read Quintus Curtius Rufus in the aftermath of Chaeronea, Alexander didn't even take joy in his father's victory because he said that they should be united since they are of the same blood, speak the same language, and have the same heritage.
@makedonserb Philip united Greece by force. Civil Wars were common in Greek history. Just because Philip fought them, doesn't mean he wasn't a Greek. Sparta fought Athens during the Peloponnesian War, does that make Sparta a 'non-Greek' state?
@Alexandros1294 barbarian meant one who does not speak greek. and mixed blood? my freind we are mixed blood right now, why are we denied our name? true macedonia is pirin from bulgaria, vardar from the republic, and egej from greece, each one is a section of the ethnic macedonia, each are descendants of the ancient macedonians, weather mixed with slav or not, there is not such thing as pure blood, we deserve the macedonian name along with the other two sections, it is macedonia region.
@makedonserb Barbarian was also an insult to Greeks. Macedonians spoke a very archaic form of Greek. You don't deserve the Macedonian name. You're Slavs. What right does a Slav, who came into the Balkans in the 6th Century AD have to the Macedonian name? Just because you hold a small corner of Upper Macedonia does not mean you're suddenly a Macedonian. You're no more Macedonian than an Albanian would be Illyrian.
@makedonserb and like I said, Alexander I and the rest of the Macedonian Kings after him were able to participate in the Olympic Games, which was a right only for Greeks. The Greeks also elected Philip to defend Delphi in one of the Sacred Wars, which shows that the Greeks thought of Philip as 'one of them.' Plus, on Ancient Macedonian coins, the name Basileus Alexandros was always on them during Alexander the Great's reign. Basileus is Greek for 'King'
@Alexandros1294 u uneducated retard, avoiding my claims. show me one coin that says vasilios alexadros, show me. and so what, have u read any ancient works??? paeonians fought in the battle of troy so did dardanians. dardanians were definately not greek yet they participated in the fight. does that make them greek now? in regard to the olympics, macedonian royals were allowed, along with thraki royals and persian royals as wel!!! get ur facts str8t. u dont know ur own history
@makedonserb In the Iliad, Dardanian refers to the Trojans. Paeonians were also not part of the Greek coalition led by Agamemnon. Persians and Thracians were not allowed in the Olympics without special honors. They weren't Greek. In Herodotus, Alexander I gives a huge speech proving his Greek ethnicity. I'm not a Greek. I'll find a coin that says Basileus Alexandros and show it to you.
@Alexandros1294 reaaad the iliad for me pleease, ihave read it many times, and it clearly shows the difference between dardanians and trojans, dardania is the old name for kosovo, completely different geographic region, and yes with SPECIAL honours, which the macedonian kings got as well. and paeonians? they werent? read the iliad my friend, they fought against agamemnon for the trojans. paeonians are also in the works " The Republic" the paeonian is with socrates when he talks about the state
@makedonserb The Macedonians were considered Greek by Alexander I's time. That's why they were allowed to pariticipate ever since. Individual Persians and Thracians had to gain honors. Most historians will agree that Dardanians, in the Iliad, refers to Trojans, just like Achaeans refers to Greeks. Paeonians are also not in the Iliad. It's been a while since I have read it, so I could be wrong though.
@Alexandros1294 paeonians were in the iliad, dardanians were from dardania , trojans were from ilium, two different ppl, thracians were not even greek yet greece has a region called thraki, and macedonians were also not greek yet greece has a region called macedonia
@makedonserb Thrace influenced Greek civilization, and ever since the reign of Lysimachus, they were considered Greek. They were Hellenistic. Macedonia was also Greek. Even the Macedonians themselves considered themselves to be Greek. Like I said, Philip was elected by the Greeks to head the Pythian Games and defend Delphi during the Sacred War. This spot was usually reserved for the Spartans. They were Greeks.
@makedonserb Makedonia is derived from the Greek word "Makednos" which means tall man. Even Macedonian names were Greek. Alexandros is derived from the words Alexein, and Andros, which means "Protector of Man," and Philip is derived from Philippos which is made up from Philos, and Hippos, which means "Friend of Horses."
This -os is how the Greek authors were calling him, everything we know about the Ancient Macedonians is from the Greek authors so they were calling them by their names.
Today's view is based on the ancient Greek sources so if there were ancient English authors they would describe him as "Alexander", I hope you got the point, long life Aleksandar's pride!
@forevermkd Alexander the Great was a Greek... All of the ancient sources on Alexander weren't Greek, they were Romans. You know nothing of history you dipshit. The name Alexander is a latinized form of Alexandros, which is Greek.
THese days its impossible to do what Alexander did, because of the UN and the International communities. So long to a glorious age of conquests, exploration and glory
I actually find it sad that all those memoirs etc. were destroyed with the great library of Alexandria... how much more would we know about Alexander The Great and others had the memoirs survived to this day...
i love this movie no matter haw much i see this movie it never gets old for me and god bless greece and alexander to me he is the greatest i wish i went back in time to save alexander and save greece thats haw much i love greece
Μέγας Ἀλέξανδρος, The man who conquered the world, the unification, pacifying the people, uniting under the Macedonian banner. The man who conquered lands, cities, and people's hearts. Alexander, Alexander the Great.
could baylonianman or someone please tell me where i can find the song from the beginning of the clip to about one minute in? cuz i dont think its on the original soundtrack. :( can someone please help?
@BatMak23 The music that is heard during the first minute of the clip was never released. This is rather common with Vangelis's soundtracks. Hopefully it will be released in an anniversary issue of the soundtrack (the some thing happened with Blade Runner).

@lekos28 Your point is moot. He was indeed a Greek, Macedonia, Albania whoever the hell else who have identity issues look at someone else's history to steal to call your own. The Sooner Macedonia realizes it has more in Common with the Greeks then the Slavs the better IMO
Exactly. Not only were Macedonia and Athens enemies at the time, but Macedonia had just conquered Amphipolis, an Athenian founded city, that Athens was very fond of. It was also a very rich city. When Philip captured Amphipolis, he gained 1,000 talents yearly from it, that's as much as the Athenian Empire made during the Peloponnesian War! It's no wonder Demosthenes was pissed at Macedonia!
@Alexandros1294 A thousand talents :0 Damn I didn't know that Phillip had access to such huge treasure. Damn thats 26 thousand kilos of Gold :O In comparison Solomon of Jerusalem, the man with the mine and unbelievable riches ;), was said to have gained 666 talents a year...
Watched this movie, after the intro by Hopkins fell asleep, only to awake at the very end with the credits and music. Without Vangelis, this movie wouldn't even score a mention on Youtube.
first of all, i would just like to say i agree with your recent comment, crazyryryryan. hats to everyone of you for recognizing the achievements of world history's greatest leader... "alexander" is probably one of the best epic films of all time. i have the final director's cut on dvd, and i have watched it over and over again since i got it. truly an amazing film and an underrated work of art. the ending scene and closing credits proves that.
at least there is someone to admires alexander the great as much as i do!!!! i too have alexander director's cut!!! i hope you like it as much as i do
The glory and the memory of men will always belong to the ones who follows their great visions !
That makes me shiver. I need to put a note on my fridge with those words. Just a reminder that life is short, follow your dreams before it is to late.
If I had a time machine, I would go back in time and save the Alexander memoirs of Ptolemy from burning!!

Destoryer86 1 year ago
@Destoryer86 People weren't too happy about the death of Parmenion either. However, they understood it was necessary with the death of Philotas. How can you kill someone's son and let the father live? Parmenion had complete control of the supply lines.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Alexandros1294 True, But Im sure they understood that it was neccesary to kill Parmenion. No way would he stay loyal after hearing his son was killed. He had control of a large army and was in control of the suply lines. It was too dangerous to allow him to live
Destoryer86 1 year ago
@Destoryer86 I think he might mean it in that... they 'let' him die through their actions/inactions so it was their fault? Because they didn't really believe in his vision etc. etc. They wanted the power, they felt threatened, they didn't stop him from his self-destructive actions... In that sense they killed him, because they were responsible for his 'safety' but they never really tried enough...

makedonserb 1 year ago
@makedonserb Macedonia is Greek. Ancient Macedonian Coins call him "Basileus Alexandros" which means King Alexander in Greek. Did I mention they were printed during his reign? It is Megas Alexandros, or more correctly ΜΕΓΑΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ. Fucking Fyromian dumbass.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Aleksandar1294 actually retard, his father was vasileus, that was his first name, and in macedonian that means vo sil , which means with power, and ilios an ancient god of the sun, alexander was called philhellene, which means friend of greeks, which means he is not greek because he cant be greek and friend of greek, he is barbarian friend of greek, barbarian meaning not greek. philip conquered greece, alexander united it to fight and conquer persia. U r from gaylada not makedonia.
makedonserb 1 year ago
@makedonserb No, dumbass. His father was Philip, or Philippos, and Alexander the Great was not called Philhellene, and that was Alexander I who was called Philhellene. He wasn't called "Friend of Greeks" because he wasn't Greek, it was because he deserted the Persian side and went over to the Athenian Side.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@makedonserb Alexander called himself Greek all the time. Read the letter he sent to Darius replying to Darius' peace offer. Read Quintus Curtius Rufus in the aftermath of Chaeronea, Alexander didn't even take joy in his father's victory because he said that they should be united since they are of the same blood, speak the same language, and have the same heritage.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@makedonserb Philip united Greece by force. Civil Wars were common in Greek history. Just because Philip fought them, doesn't mean he wasn't a Greek. Sparta fought Athens during the Peloponnesian War, does that make Sparta a 'non-Greek' state?
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@makedonserb Macedonia was considered barbarian because the kingdom had mixed blood, it was made up of Greeks, Thracians, and Illyrians.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Alexandros1294 barbarian meant one who does not speak greek. and mixed blood? my freind we are mixed blood right now, why are we denied our name? true macedonia is pirin from bulgaria, vardar from the republic, and egej from greece, each one is a section of the ethnic macedonia, each are descendants of the ancient macedonians, weather mixed with slav or not, there is not such thing as pure blood, we deserve the macedonian name along with the other two sections, it is macedonia region.
makedonserb 1 year ago
@makedonserb Barbarian was also an insult to Greeks. Macedonians spoke a very archaic form of Greek. You don't deserve the Macedonian name. You're Slavs. What right does a Slav, who came into the Balkans in the 6th Century AD have to the Macedonian name? Just because you hold a small corner of Upper Macedonia does not mean you're suddenly a Macedonian. You're no more Macedonian than an Albanian would be Illyrian.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@makedonserb and like I said, Alexander I and the rest of the Macedonian Kings after him were able to participate in the Olympic Games, which was a right only for Greeks. The Greeks also elected Philip to defend Delphi in one of the Sacred Wars, which shows that the Greeks thought of Philip as 'one of them.' Plus, on Ancient Macedonian coins, the name Basileus Alexandros was always on them during Alexander the Great's reign. Basileus is Greek for 'King'
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Alexandros1294 u uneducated retard, avoiding my claims. show me one coin that says vasilios alexadros, show me. and so what, have u read any ancient works??? paeonians fought in the battle of troy so did dardanians. dardanians were definately not greek yet they participated in the fight. does that make them greek now? in regard to the olympics, macedonian royals were allowed, along with thraki royals and persian royals as wel!!! get ur facts str8t. u dont know ur own history
makedonserb 1 year ago
@makedonserb In the Iliad, Dardanian refers to the Trojans. Paeonians were also not part of the Greek coalition led by Agamemnon. Persians and Thracians were not allowed in the Olympics without special honors. They weren't Greek. In Herodotus, Alexander I gives a huge speech proving his Greek ethnicity. I'm not a Greek. I'll find a coin that says Basileus Alexandros and show it to you.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Alexandros1294 reaaad the iliad for me pleease, ihave read it many times, and it clearly shows the difference between dardanians and trojans, dardania is the old name for kosovo, completely different geographic region, and yes with SPECIAL honours, which the macedonian kings got as well. and paeonians? they werent? read the iliad my friend, they fought against agamemnon for the trojans. paeonians are also in the works " The Republic" the paeonian is with socrates when he talks about the state
makedonserb 1 year ago
@makedonserb The Macedonians were considered Greek by Alexander I's time. That's why they were allowed to pariticipate ever since. Individual Persians and Thracians had to gain honors. Most historians will agree that Dardanians, in the Iliad, refers to Trojans, just like Achaeans refers to Greeks. Paeonians are also not in the Iliad. It's been a while since I have read it, so I could be wrong though.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Alexandros1294 paeonians were in the iliad, dardanians were from dardania , trojans were from ilium, two different ppl, thracians were not even greek yet greece has a region called thraki, and macedonians were also not greek yet greece has a region called macedonia
makedonserb 1 year ago
@makedonserb Thrace influenced Greek civilization, and ever since the reign of Lysimachus, they were considered Greek. They were Hellenistic. Macedonia was also Greek. Even the Macedonians themselves considered themselves to be Greek. Like I said, Philip was elected by the Greeks to head the Pythian Games and defend Delphi during the Sacred War. This spot was usually reserved for the Spartans. They were Greeks.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@makedonserb Makedonia is derived from the Greek word "Makednos" which means tall man. Even Macedonian names were Greek. Alexandros is derived from the words Alexein, and Andros, which means "Protector of Man," and Philip is derived from Philippos which is made up from Philos, and Hippos, which means "Friend of Horses."

Not Aleksandros but Aleksandar.

The name of the ancient Macedonians is derived from Macedon, who
was the grandchild of Deukalion, the father of all Greeks. This we may
infer from Hesiods genealogy. It may be proven that Macedonians spoke
Greek since Macedon, the ancestor of Macedonians, was a brother of
Magnes, the ancestor of Thessalians, who spoke Greek.

Alexandros1294 1 year ago 4
@Alexandros1294 A thousand talents :0 Damn I didn't know that Phillip had access to such huge treasure. Damn thats 26 thousand kilos of Gold :O In comparison Solomon of Jerusalem, the man with the mine and unbelievable riches ;), was said to have gained 666 talents a year...
