Bassey has a more powerful dramatic voice that is even more commanding than Whitney. I also feel Bassey is more fit and stronger physically to bring that extra consistent power to a song. Of course every singer will play to their strenghts and Whitney has plenty of voice control and headvoice abilities that she injects into a song to bring color. Whitney could probably sing a song better to put a baby to sleep than Bassey if you get the idea.

Whitney was without doubt one of the best singers of the 20th C, but in the 21st C she can't sing any of her earlier songs, even in a lower key

That is to do with mic sensitivity.. Dion Warwick has her mic usually about a foot away from her in some videos. The can both belt but when do u hear Shirley sing in her head voice or do any inflections.. Shirley Bassey is more of the Aretha Franklin/Etta James generation so its a bit unfair here. But it's easy to cry about Whitney's career after all these videos. But save whitney's memorabilia. It's very cheap nowadays, but the day she passes OR if we're lucky gets into some hall of fame, you can cash in just like you could for Michael Jackson after he passed.

This should not be a comparison they are different type of singers- Shirley Bassey is a old school belter the likes of Judy Garland and Ethel Merman. Whitney Houston is a Soul-Pop Singer with a church background there are from two totally different worlds.
Different eras and singing styles is true. In my opinion, both Shirley and Whitney can sing and hold a note very well. Shirley on one hand has more of a throatier depth to her voice with a lot of power. She also might have a larger diaphragm. Whitney on the other hand, had a very sweet and beautiful sound to her voice pre-Preacher's Wife. To this day I feel no female pop singer has been able to top her head voice notes. I heard a few excerpts of Whitney singing opera. All I could say is, Wow!

Whitney was fantastic. She never has been able to hold a candle to Dame Shirley Bassey vocally. She certainly can't now. Her voice has not survived the stress and strife of her life. Dame Shirley on the other hand, only gets better with time. She is still performing at 73 years old. And she looks and sounds phenomenal.It is amazing that it is without any ticks of the studio or modern equipment. The one area Whitney wins in, is in her marketing. Both are incredible. Shirley's power seems endless but Whitney's tone, richness, vocal phrasing, clearity is unmatched and Whitney's chest voice is far more pleasing to the ears.
Well it's funny u say high notes.. everyone thinks belting is high.. u never hear Shirley sing in her head voice whereas u do with Whitney thus Whitney sings higher. Anyway, they can both belt- actually rather similar in that respect. But I never here Shirley use her head voice or add inflections which would be impressive. Whit always boasts these areas. I think Whitney is simply a greater technician but they both sing with great emotion and dedication.
I respect yours too.. I would however be interested in viewing more performances of Shirley demonstrating those abilities. Nevertheless, she is a marvelous songstress- Whitney too.

Yes, they both have a big sound but Shirley's tone is much darker and I think her voice "blooms" when she applies more power while Whitney's often seems somewhat pushed. This being said Whitney could belt higher in her prime and her vocal lines were just crazy. She's a better singer
True; I was being too general. I mean they have a very strong chest. The tone, on the other hand, is different. Both fast vibrato. Shirley's, I think, has much more emphasis with a start to the note. I don´t think it´s fare to compare this too living legends. They come from diffrent muscial backgrund. Whitney had her unique voice and Dame Shirley has a career before Whitney even was born. Whitney does it for me; she has more variety and a beautiful tone. Shirley does indeed just grip the audience with her presence and persona but Whitney never fails to simply blow my mind away with her vocals alone!! Just listen to those runs..!.

i'd urge anyone who hasn't already, to watch shirley singing "this is my life" on here. if you search by the title it'll be the first one (in yellow/orange outfit. about 500,000 viewings). the audio, the song, the performance are brilliant! if that whets your appetite, look for "never, never, never" from the same concert (same outfit).
One of the facets of having the greatest voice of all time needs to include consistency over time. Technically, over 5 decades, Bassey can't be matched by anyone. Any other comparisons are meaningless because these ladies don't even sing in the same key. Saying that a Soprano (Houston) is better because she hits soprano notes (which she no longer can do) isn't saying much.
A few more facets of a technically superior voice are vocal projection along with spine tingling timbre at all register levels. Shirley has mastered both head and diaphram vocals to keep her voice strong while Houston STILL sings through her throat. Houston is thus subject to losing her voice during LIve performances and this just happened again on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Shirley doesn't sing the genre to do "riffs". Doing riffs doesn't mean better singing either,or else Streisand and Sinatra would be considered untalented. As for head voice, Shirley learned that in the 80s, but she was able to maintain her voice even though she sang in chest all the time. That is hard!!!
shirley sings in FULL CHEST which is amazing but whitney is known for singing in full chest..... not many singers do that.... look at aretha, patti and chaka who waill in practically head voice. whitneys problem was that she belted too high in full chest which is dangerous, if you dont add enough head voice to your belts it can be prolbmatic.

google.... whitney houston russia 2009 or something.... she did two concerts earlier this month for practice.... she's starting her euro tour in feb...... then leading to the n. american leg of the tour prob in the summer/fall........... her last concert in russia was the best she's sounded in years... the tour will do wonders for her voice, routintely strenghthing the muscle which is her voice.... plus she regained alot of clarity and range already

im only taking about the mid range in terms of belting... both women belt in the G4-C5 range, that is where there strength lies... so im not really talking about range but saying that whitneys belts in this video extend up the F5-F#5ish unlike shirley. im dissing shirley because I LOVE HER, she's in my top 5 female singer of all time for sure.... but all things considered, whitneys a better singer but there both in the upper echelons of vocal talent and superiority

Shirley is perhaps a bigger belter with a lot of power but Whiten is a better singer with a better voice. Every song Shirly sings, it sound alike because of the limited range even though very powerful.
I disagree. Shirley's voice has a wide range, and it got wider as she got older and got a coach who helped her increase it. It is now about 3.5 octaves. Not that behind. She certainly doesn't make all her songs sound the same.
Shirley Bassey's voice and performance is definitely the stronger and if we were going to make this comparison as of today Shirley (at 72) would be the better vocalist hands down.
Actually, I think the comparison is actually quite appropriate but Whitney definitely does it for me; not only can she belt like no other but has a glistening head voice which she move to and from with ease and she also decorates the lyric with beautiful melismatic phrasing (inflexions like 'runs' n stuff).

That is to do with mic sensitivity.. Dion Warwick has her mic usually about a foot away from her in some videos. The can both belt but when do u hear Shirley sing in her head voice or do any inflections.. I respect the comment they are different and cannot be compared- that is wise and sensible but saying Shirley is better is a lie. Personally, I think Whitney is the greater technician, with far greater ability in a lot of areas. They can both belt but, like I said, Whit offers more.

Shirley Bassey is more of the Aretha Franklin/Etta James generation so its a bit unfair here. But it's easy to cry about Whitney's career after all these videos. But save whitney's memorabilia. It's very cheap nowadays, but the day she passes OR if we're lucky gets into some hall of fame, you can cash in just like you could for Michael Jackson after he passed.

Different eras and singing styles is true. In my opinion, both Shirley and Whitney can sing and hold a note very well. Shirley on one hand has more of a throatier depth to her voice with a lot of power. She also might have a larger diaphragm. Whitney on the other hand, had a very sweet and beautiful sound to her voice pre-Preacher's Wife. To this day I feel no female pop singer has been able to top her head voice notes. I heard a few excerpts of Whitney singing opera. All I could say is, Wow!

Whitney was fantastic. She never has been able to hold a candle to Dame Shirley Bassey vocally. She certainly can't now. Her voice has not survived the stress and strife of her life. Dame Shirley on the other hand, only gets better with time. She is still performing at 73 years old. And she looks and sounds phenomenal.It is amazing that it is without any ticks of the studio or modern equipment. The one area Whitney wins in, is in her marketing. She is much better known because of it. Thanks

Well it's funny u say high notes.. everyone thinks belting is high.. u never hear Shirley sing in her head voice whereas u do with Whitney thus Whitney sings higher. Anyway, they can both belt- actually rather similar in that respect. But I never here Shirley use her head voice or add inflections which would be impressive. Whit always boasts these areas. I think Whitney is simply a greater technician but they both sing with great emotion and dedication.

Yes, they both have a big sound but Shirley's tone is much darker and I think her voice "blooms" when she applies more power while Whitney's often seems somewhat pushed. This being said Whitney could belt higher in her prime and her vocal lines were just crazy. She's a better singer

True; I was being too general. I mean they have a very strong chest. The tone, on the other hand, is different. Both fast vibrato. Shirley's, I think, has much more emphasis with a start to the note. Real presence and power throughout the note. I think Whitney's soars and is quite rich sounding with, like u said, more impressive melismatic phrasing. We're all missing the point. The clips of Houston are of her as a young and talented gospel style singer, which is her ONLY style. Bassey is now 74 years old and STILL sings live with the same power as when she was 20. Whitney is finished. THATS the measure of a true entertainer. DSB has it over Houston a million times.
In 50 years, Houston will be just another half forgotten pop singer. Bassey goes into the history books together with Garland and Fitzgerald as one of the all time greats.

i'd urge anyone who hasn't already, to watch shirley singing "this is my life" on here. if you search by the title it'll be the first one (in yellow/orange outfit. about 500,000 viewings). the audio, the song, the performance are brilliant! if that whets your appetite, look for "never, never, never" from the same concert (same outfit).

with the mic close up to her mouth. Where as watching DSB, she seems to stand a good few feet away from the mic
also, she often sings side on to the mic.

One of the facets of having the greatest voice of all time needs to include consistency over time. Technically, over 5 decades, Bassey can't be matched by anyone. Any other comparisons are meaningless because these ladies don't even sing in the same key. Saying that a Soprano (Houston) is better because she hits soprano notes (which she no longer can do) isn't saying much.

A few more facets of a technically superior voice are vocal projection along with spine tingling timbre at all register levels. Shirley has mastered both head and diaphram vocals to keep her voice strong while Houston STILL sings through her throat. Houston is thus subject to losing her voice during LIve performances and this just happened again on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Shirley doesn't sing the genre to do "riffs". Doing riffs doesn't mean better singing either,or else Streisand and Sinatra would be considered untalented. As for head voice, Shirley learned that in the 80s, but she was able to maintain her voice even though she sang in chest all the time. That is hard!!!

calm down. No one says Shirley is not talented, sigh. She has robust voice for sure and her acting adds up to spectacular effect. The way she preserved her voice is impressive too.
It's just that she sings all songs pretty much the same while Whitney makes hers more interesting vocally. Another thing is that her range was wider than Shirley's (at least in her prime. I don't know how she's doing now though)

google.... whitney houston russia 2009 or something.... she did two concerts earlier this month for practice.... she's starting her euro tour in feb...... then leading to the n. american leg of the tour prob in the summer/fall........... her last concert in russia was the best she's sounded in years... the tour will do wonders for her voice, routintely strenghthing the muscle which is her voice.... plus she regained alot of clarity and range already

Shirley is perhaps a bigger belter with a lot of power but Whiten is a better singer with a better voice. Every song Shirly sings, it sound alike because of the limited range even though very powerful.

I disagree. Shirley's voice has a wide range, and it got wider as she got older and got a coach who helped her increase it. It is now about 3.5 octaves. Not that behind. She certainly doesn't make all her songs sound the same.

Shirley Bassey's voice and performance is definitely the stronger and if we were going to make this comparison as of today Shirley (at 72) would be the better vocalist hands down.

I can not say anything negative about Witney
But no one compares to Ms. Bassey, voice, stage, performance, ah yeah class.
It will be interesting to compara Ms. Bassey (72) when Witney become 72 years old

This is such an odd match-up. These two women are from completely different times, and worlds.
Bassey is from the old school of belting. Raw, powerful and Vaudeville.
Whitney's background is Gospel.
I don't know, just seems like an odd duel. Personally, I'm much more fond of Bassey.

im comparing their voices, because when it comes to power belting i always thought Bassey was the only comparable person to whitney.

Actually, I think the comparison is actually quite appropriate but Whitney definitely does it for me; not only can she belt like no other but has a glistening head voice which she move to and from with ease and she also decorates the lyric with beautiful melismatic phrasing (inflexions like 'runs' n stuff).
It really does take a lot to challenge this lady called 'the voice' :P
