cuddleyduddley : I'll do my best to explain. Phil Lesh is a founding member of the Grateful Dead, and he has a reputation for carrying on the "jam" tradition of the Dead. Originally, Kanye was given an evening slot on the Which stage, but since his set was supposedly a "glow in the dark" set, he threw a fit because it would still be light out for his original slot. He also insisted on performing on the main stage as a headliner.
cont: So, to accomodate Kanye's requests, Bonnaroo rescheduled him on the main stage for a special late night set at 2:00 a.m. As it turned out, Kanye also insisted that he play virtually unopposed at the festival. So, while everyone was expecting Phil to jam into the early morning hours, Phil announced at about 1:45 that he was about to perform one last song because Kanye West was going to start his set on the main stage, which is a stone's throw from the What stage.
cont,2: Cutting a set short was totally uncharacteristic of Phil, and he only did it because he was asked to. I wouldn't blame Phil for being offended at this request, but he never really gave a public statement about the incident. What was a real shame was that Phil could have played for another TWO HOURS before Kanye finally took the stage.
cont,3:The opinion of most people who were there or that heard about it is that Kanye's egotistical maneuvering wound up being a huge slap in the face to Phil Lesh. Phil Lesh should never have been subjected to time constraints that, incidentally, were imposed upon him and the entire festival by Kanye West. Then to top off Kanye being late, he cut his set short and wound up playing in the daylight anyway.
cont,4: If he had stuck to the original plan and performed where and when he was scheduled, he probably would have left a positive impression on the Bonnaroo community. Instead, he made about 100,000 enemies overnight. Even though I would love to see Phil on the farm again, I wouldn't blame him if he didn't return. So, this video may have been the last song we ever hear from Phil at Bonnaroo. Rant now concluded ;-)
@Benrdsknrd Wow! Thanks for the play by play.... I was just wondering.... On YouTube, I heard that Phil got miffed... and I heard that it was Kanye's fault... but I didn't know the dirt. Yeah, right! Phil got blown off by the promoters, and as always, the good guys take the blame... Kanye should have 100,000 "haters"... Just got back from SummerFest, and although I'm "old", I couldn't handle the Kanye immitation band.. makes my skin crawl. Clapton rocked the house!
Thank you so much for posting this video. This was my first Bonnaroo and this song made it all worth the while. At 2:19 Phil points at me and my friend Joe we were in the heat of it all and roasting a major bowl of Kush he let out a huge hit and passed it to me as all the lights were shining on me. Me and Phil locked eyes and I could have jumped out of my skin. Thanks once again for catching it on tape. P.S.FUCK KANYE
Will someone tell me, please, what Kanye did to fuck up Bonaroo so badly for Phil? Was it that Kanye was late?
