Nothing like sonar pinging in space, torpedo broadsides front point blank and lame retro fighter designs to say "Dont take me seriously"....I also LOVE how they all talk quiet when the enemy ship is scanning for them, as if in space they will HEAR them...WTF?
@CanadaMan81 The talking quietly thing is psychological. The same thing happens on modern submarines. I stress modern, WWII and early Cold War subs actually were that poorly soundproofed.
The movie's battle scenes reminded me of old World War II films, but in space. Though I still can't get over the fact they re-cast Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamil, the king of science fiction with Freddie "Fred from Scooby Doo" Prinz Jr.
This movie had pretty good effects for its time, and the toe to toe battles between torpedo-slinging cap. ships were awesome to behold.
Those fighters looked stupid as fuck, though - the WW1 pilot get-up too. I really hate it when people try to shoehorn "retro" designs into otherwise futuristic settings. Completely pulls me out of the movie.
That was the point of the game, though. It was meant to be a contrast to many of the sim-based games of the time. The "Space is About Dogfighting" thing is a deliberate anachronism, it wasn't shoehorned in.
@harlequin2262 I understand that. In the games it wasn't so bad. They kept the feel of WW2 (or WW1 even) in space as far as the actual combat was concerned, which was cool, but the outfits, ships, technology etc still looked futuristic, or at the very least reasonably modern.
In the movie they had the feel down pat, but the fighter design and pilot uniforms were too obviously retro for my liking. I just don't think it meshed very well with the setting. Other design choices were ok, though.
I suppose it's that old argument between textual integrity, and making a decent film. The early resident evil films more or less got both. Super Mario Brothers failed on both counts.
@ancalites Response 2 Paragraph 1: Yeah, it is kinda cool how this movie's weapons are more "solid-matter" based rather then energy-based. In a way, it proves that material weapons can be just as devastating as energy weapons.
Paragraph #2 Response: Well, you have got to give them credit for at least trying. Who knows, if they keep trying, their stuff might get better, and you might grow to like it someday. ;)

The disregard of gravity in this movie is laughable and sad.

There is no gravity affecting the fighters, so why would the fighters dip when they were launching from the Tiger's Claw? ^_^

Space battles had great effects, but mediocre composition. How the hell does a "carrier" only have about 20 planes?
nelsonmars 2 years ago 2
The space battles were good.
The face-to-face combat was lame because of how utterly fake the Kilrathi looked XD. The way they just dropped straight down when shot like that.
