Mark, If I can point something out to you regarding the 2600 version of this game: the asteroids DO scatter in random directions when you go through the modes. It starts somewhere in the mid 20s.
I can understand if it was not possible to emulate the vector-beam graphics of the arcade version, but why not make all the asteroids gray colored like, say, big rocks in space which is what they are?
@mettalero66 Firefox with Adblock addons prevent those video commercials. I haven't seen one in a very long time. I love my Firefox. Such a good little Firefox!!! :D
damn this game is sick......I still have the Atari 2600 that I still play, but never had the 7800. I think thats next on my list of things to buy along with this game.
This was such an incredibly awesome port of Asteroids. It was often referred to as Asteroids Deluxe, but I've played a port of the arcade Asteroids Deluxe and I must say that this 7800 version is way better. The rendered animation on the asteroids, the colorful graphics, and the killer ambient space sounds in the background!
The vector graphics of the arcade boxes (and MAME) are so simple and elegant, that for me, they really enhance the controls and the "purist" gameplay experience of Asteroids. I don't like the bitmap graphics or gameplay of the console ports but the arcade version is one of my all-time favs.
I like all versions except the 2600's, which looks like it was designed overnight. This one looks like the most graphically advanced, even more advanced than the original arcade.
You should mention the 2-player mode on the 7800 version. This and Centipede had awesome 2-player simultaneous modes which was what really put them miles ahead of the 2600 version.
Oh sorry about people not liking my comment. Just remember that the game's purpose is clearly explained in that version, you get more ships, can cheat (lol), it looks better, and there are special shots.
I've always been horrible at Asteroids, and I've never really liked it.
Although, I did like a Asteroids clone I had once called Comet Busters. This has special abilities such as Hyperspace, shield, and an Asteroid like magnet shield thing, which would pull or repel Asteroids, as well as a disruptor. It was a 4 player PC game, really sweet actually. The "Asteroids" were also differently shaped, my favorite was the 4th level, the Asteroids were billiard balls.
@Indead Thanks to your comment my brother and I were able to find Comet Busters, which we had forgotten the name of but have been trying to find for the past few years. Thanks so much!
Looks worlds better than the old seizure-inducing vector graphics of the earlier versions. I never liked Asteroids much anyway - same goes for Pac-Man actually - both have shallow, repetitive, depressing gameplay. In both cases you're trapped in a small dark space from which you can never leave, forever fighting a foe that will never be beaten, who will only come back faster, stronger and more numerous if you're somehow able to achieve short-lived victory. It's kinda like being in Hell! :D
This game is actually built in to the bootROM on European 7800's. It starts automatically if you turn on the machine without a game in it.
So you have to push the 2nd button to use the warp? They should have also let you push down like on the 2600 version, that way you could use a 1-button controller.
@ScrewAttackEurope There are prototypes for classic systems, like I know there's one out there for the Atari 2600 (I've played it.) I think there was even a 5200 version planned too, but again, cancelled. (Probably due to the 1983 Video game Crash)
Nice review although you forgot to mention the best thing about the 7800 version - the co-op and deathmatch modes. I didn't care much for the deatchmatch mode but the co-op mode (which 7800 Centipede also had) was a lot of fun and made things more exciting.
Asteroids is my favourite classic arcade game. Although I prefer one of the remakes on the PC, can't remember the name since I haven't played it in a while. It was released in mid-90s and had SVGA graphics.
A fun, and very distinctive port. Very glad to have this built into my PAL 7800.

Why make the asteroids pastel colored?

@gillianorley What fun is that? That'd be boring to look at in a video-game setting.

This game is garbage on anything but the classic arcade machines with the very BRIGHT vector graphics. Beauty.
Squizzirrel 3 years ago
Its pretty hard to control not using an arcade joystick. Although there is a good version of it somewhere online.
TenguGuy 3 years ago
The arcade version of this didn't use a joystick. It was all buttons. Two rotation buttons, thrust, fire, and hyperspace.
Arcade buttons do allow for much faster firing though.

You are aware that if you select a different "skill" on asteroids for the 2600 they won't go vertical all the time. A/B switches remember?

yea when u hit the game select button about 11 times the asteroids move like crazy. all i know is its one of the games where you use the shield
