  • I agree with you 100% even though this video was done in 2007; it is still in practice. In 2009, at North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC, 70% of the kids were from mainstreamed failed and yes, a dumping ground at NCSD... duh!

  • I agree with you and your concerns apply to children with physical disabilities as well. I agree 100%.

  • I've been mainstreamed my whole life from K through 12. I have come to a realization that Deaf students would be labeled as guinea pigs in mainstreaming system. I do not like that the fact that the Deaf children shall be "assimilated" by the mass of hearing children in the public schools. The truth is that the hearing people have long wanted to disperse deaf children in public schools. No wonder why Deaf children have been segregated for so long!

  • @gratefuldeaf I'm sorry you feel that way. I was mainstreamed K-10 and spend last two years in deaf school. I saw a completely new world and how the education system works. I can safely assure you their educational level is very elementary as they were teaching sentence structures where I learned this in elementary school. If I were you, I would be happy I was mainstreamed! I spent last two years being lazy as there was nothing new to learn. I did not do classwork or homework and still got an A.

  • You've got a smokin' body.

  • You one of my heroes, honestly. I would like to fundraise for the DBC. I will be looking at your website to see how I can do that. Thanks for your intelligence, eloquence, and (from what I can see below) your infinite patience in attempting to educate others.

  • see the recent comment? so yeah, youre giving out biased sources. that wasnt cool of you doing that, avbria.

  • i strongly disagree with you, avbria. i am a mainstreamed student since i can remember. im studying at an university and im majoring in psychology. my social life cannot be any better. being a mainstream kid doesnt mean the kid lacks his/her social skills. in fact i have thousand of friends. some of them are hearing, some hoh, some deaf. well....actually most of my friends are deaf. anyway the biggest influence on kids' educate/social life is the way their parent treat them.

  • I share the same background as yours. I am just sharing what I am observing being a teacher for 15 plus years. It is just a general observance not necessarily true for every individual who are mainstreamed. I am calling for quality assurance that someone who is neutral should be accountable to evaluate Deaf students' academic progress rather than being evaluated by mainstreaming staff who can be easily biased to "keep" the students there.

  • to be not biased, tell us PRO for mainstream schools. all i hear is CON for mainstream and PRO for deaf school. don't you dare to say you're neutral. judging you from other videos, you're very optimistic.

i may sound optimistic too, but i am not, in fact i dont give a fuck what your opinions are. all i care is that you know both sides and share both side to people. ill be not happy if you told them why mainstream schools are good and why deaf schools are bad.

  • Never said that I was neutral. Optimistic? Ok, I will accept that but I am a realist too. This is my vlog and I share my opinions that I see it fit and if you don't give a fuck then what are you doing here? By the way, I am not interested to share that the mainstreaming programs are good or Deaf schools are bad or vice versa as all I am interested to share what I have observed and see it that justice is to be served. No one deserves to be left behind in education. Don't you get it?

  • you're right, i didnt catch it. so you admit you are not neutral.

frankly, yes, i dont give a fuck about this subject, but the reason why i am here -- it's that you're feeding people with ONE side. are you afraid to give people more options? to be great observer, you need to UNDERSTAND BOTH SIDES and GIVE PEOPLE MORE OPTIONS, so that parent can pick what is best for their kids. you gave us ONE fucking option. you're not a observer unless you tell us OTHER options.

  • Looks like you don't understand the concept of a vlog or a blog that it is for those observers who share their perspectives, opinions, experiences, etc. Nowhere it says it is required for everyone to give two sides of the topic when doing a vlog or a blog. People know better than that to seek for options by doing research, duh.

  • ill be not happy if you told them why mainstream schools are good and why deaf schools are bad OR vice versa. i'll like you to show both sides, wouldn't you do that next time, please?

again, remember, i dont give a fuck what your opinions are, just don't feed us one side, feed us both sides, fucking democrats.

  • you calling me a fucking democrat? Ok, the conversation is so over since there is no diplomacy in you. I would suggest you to polish on your social skills and learn more about how psychology works. When you are ready, you are welcome to come back.

  • i have no diplomacy in me? that's kind of ironic, it's you, you don't know what youre talking about. you're not professional in this position, but you do have respect. i am majoring in this position, but i need to build up my respect.

i may be a lot younger than you, but oh fucking yes, i know how psychology works.

why are you using fancy words? trying to sound smart? well, i can do better than that. BUT it's unnecessary to talk like that HERE on youtube.

  • Yeah, its unnecessary for you to use profane language so that's why you are not being diplomatic. Sounds like you need some growing up to do. Good luck with your career.

  • who's business is it to inform the parents.. u stated it's against the Code of Ethics for Interpreters.. so what should be done???that's a sticky situation.

  • agree

  • We need to have our guidelines for Quality Standards: Programs for Deaf and HoH students. Our Department of Education does not carry one... It would be helpful to have the parents to get the awareness about the practical application of a child's educational needs. First of all, I believe strongly from my heart that we must establish our utmost dynamism of the drive with the right direction for our future education: It is the starting point on Pre school funding programs...We can prove it

  • Depend on. not always. some are so good .some are not good.Smile!

  • that's true and

    (applause) very brave!!!

  • Very true. The misconception that if a student learns asl they will not learn spoken language is incideous. Sometimes education, unfortunately, seems like a 'wait to fail' model. Language is the KEY to success. Right on.

  • Also let me clear up about Intervenor role, they speak up for deafblind, to educate the deafblind to how speak up for their needs. They also explain the details in the classroom. Write notes, scan papers to bigger size (SHE IS EXCELLENT AT IT!!.. haha) (this is same role as for hearing blind students, but much difference with deafblind. Guess? AS for deafblind student's intervenor, DEMANDS TO HAVE ASL!!

  • As a Intervenor Role, they speak up for deafblind, not all time, this is for displays deafblind how to speak up their needs. My intervenor is very strong, speak up, teaches me bunch of stuff. She has excellent ASL, excellent experience with deafblind for 30 years! I learned ALOT more, triple or much times more faster. SO on.... grade 7th-9, again 9 cuz of skipped gr 6 (this is basic on age reason, and education) Now I'm grade 10, education is equals to other hearing kids! Thank god for that :D

  • basic on DHHP class. They are not encouraged enough. It is like just treat me a easy works. Repeated worksheets. That was so terrible, they just think I just have to understand all of them, they are right, but I cant just stay in same position! (Thankfully, I skipped grade 6 for DHHP reason!). Later on, I moved to High school. In grade 7th, somehow my mom found miracle Intervenor (I am deafblind, well sorry to tell too late) She is a Coda, (This is mean that she has deaf parents)(blah, next com)

  • Hey. I'm so glad that you announced this on YouTube since it is popular, haha.

Anyways, I was about to say, I have those experiences.. (I'm deaf person of course). I remember in grade 1-5th grades.. No interpreter, no assistance(s), no supports, expect my mother, (thankful to my mother). SO that's was about 1995-04. I remember I were in DHHP (Deaf & Hard Hearing Program). They are not good for me at all. When I was grade @ 5th grade... my reading level is about grade 3,(limited, next comment)

  • Hearing people can read lips better than a deaf person can because English is our first language.

  • You would be surprised that hearing people can't read lips as they are not trained to do that. They only can hear not read.

  • i agree.

  • (to clear up confusion: i agree to being able to lipread well, i'm deaf and in my experience with no hearing i can communicate with almost anyone on lipreading alone--i just have to be strong in requesting the person repeat when necessary and face me.)

  • Its a fact that given the chance, most deaf people would not want to hear. They like their little "club".

  • Every educational opportunity needs to be evaluated on an individual basis. In my area, students who are mainstreamed have a better language base and many more opportunities than those who attend deaf schools.

I have found that many teachers in deaf schools do not even really know ASL they use a CASE/pidgeon sign language leaving the grammar at the door and not teaching that to the students. If you teach an incomplete language, they will not have a complete language base.

  • the best I can do is to provide transcript cuz captioning is really time consuming and more difficult to translate. Please look at the right column and click the link to lead you to the transcript.

  • The problem is the parents are not involved enough in the deaf student's/child's life. They dont sign and expect the school to teach everything. LIfe skills, language, etc and thats how the student in the mainstream gets behind. There are not enough hours in a school day to teach all that plus academics.

  • Amen you are so right.

  • One more commenting about needing captions... Imagine how Deaf feel all the time, needing captions but getting none. It's very different when the tables are turned.

  • Very good vlog. Do you know that the law says mainstream is preferred, then if viewed unsuccessful, then they will be transferred to a residential school. Because the local school district is required to provide proper accomodations. I was a teacher for mainstreamed Deaf, I hated that law. Because I knew best for the Deaf is residential! I wish the law would change.

  • You are very sexy.

  • I agreed.. End of the discussion! :-D lol

  • Interesting! I guess teachers for deaf classes at mainsteam schools don't want to lose job, so they would have to lie that they are doing great or whatever? Once mainstream school set up, it's hard to close it.

  • please, can someone translate it for me? i really want to learn sign language.

  • hi barb,

this is judy.. i had been to a public school since 9 yrs old and i made it thru and i admit that i am very happy that i went to a public school and graduated from there. i am very confident since my mom has been " my teacher".. know what i mean? she encouraged me to be confident and love myself... i cant blame deafies that struggled thru hearing world at school..

  • That website is good idea but I recommend you provide the caption on the video because hearing people not bother to click the link and could ingore that. I am curious what kind of program you using? Are you using MAC or PC?

  • I suggest that you provide the caption on this video to show hearing parents to understand what you said and take your advice. I believe the hearing parents do research on youtube and other info about deaf child. That way hearing parents know what to do with their own deaf child. Most hearing parents do not know sign language. I hope you take my advice. :-)

  • Yes, I know what you are saying. The best I can do is to provide the transcript as you can find it on the upper right column by clicking on my website. Captioning is very time consuming that will prevent me to make more video clips. If there is a service to do it for me, then I am all eyes.

  • Maybe the hearing parents can read Barb's lips. She has a clear face. Some hearing parents expect people to read lips. They can try it themselves here.
