I purchased a Hitachi 2.0 500gb, my computer is not receiving the connect through the usb cable and its not showing up in my computer. i'm trying to find out how to do it manually.

I have a WD portable hard drive. It is accessible from my friends computer and my laptop, but i cannot get my PC to recognize that it is there. Device Manager shows it is there and recognizes it as an external hard drive, but when i go to "My Computer", it does not show it there at all. What should I do?
How do you transfer programs from my laptop to my external hdd (1.5 TB iomega, 2.0 usb >_<) ...programs like Adobe photoshop, Google Sketchup, Vuze, Pinnacle Studio 14??? Especially PS 14 because that damn thing runs SO slow on my laptop...and I need to edit my films because Im a film major. So, what's up? My computer is shit so I bought this 1.5TB
I bought an enclosure for my 3.5 inch to act as an external HD but whenever I connect it I can never find it. I see windows working in the background installing it but whenever i go to explorer there are no new drive letters. Please help =(

@oconano - press F5 to refresh once it's attached. You can also try connecting to other pc's and see if it will work.

@chinavasion Thank You. After further research I found out my plug and play was turned off in my computer management settings.

Can a portable external hard drive be used just like a flash drive or not?

An external drive is like an internal HDD, but portable as a result it's not possible to use them exactly as you would a flash drive.
Flash drives will still have a place on your keychain.
