@theSneakySasquatch Frog or Marle will probably be your best two healers. Frog can Aoe heal quite effectivly, and combos with chrono quite well in damage. Marle can't aoe heal, but her single target heal heals for more, and can apply haste to your party :D
Yeah I did the same as him, only I used crono as offensive along with frog, and cast the occasional ice spell with marle. But honestly as far as boss battles go marle is a godsend when it comes to keeping the party in fighting shape. I don't think I've taken marle out of my party once, because aura whirl is the best move in the game so far.
your characters shoulda been more geared up at this time lol and use Marle and Chrono's double tech (Aura Whirl) shoulda helped alot! but well done bro
@stevensadler82 Aura Whirl doesn't heal nearly for as much as Mid Tonics and using 2 Characters for 0dmg is just bad, since it just heals for 120 or so, so you need to use 2-3 for a full heal. Also using Marle means you can only do damage while Ice or Lightning is in play, meaning even more damage on your party.
@DarkDragonXXD yah man no arguments here lol but what i typically do is cast haste on everyone...have chrono and marle sit defensive and also use any items that protect against magic...then have Frog attack only...healing the group with aura whirls and tonics as needed...then when it says "magus risks casting a spell" ...have everyone go nuts on him....cuz to me it seems that their double techs are most potent at this point. I ussually have done it this way with no problems
@wisemanrashidi Guessing you didn't even bother to check the lvls or what tech I had, Robo would never even have had Heal beam for this fight, even if I had used him constantly (since this was a kind of low lv run, not lowest though) and Robo has the crappiest MDef in the game, making him terrible for Magus.
Hmmm if the majority of gamers like old-school games better, why don't developers take a hint and design their games with more of an old-school feel? Doesn't that make more sense? You would think they would sell like hotcakes since everyone is always saying about how newer games aren't as good as the old ones. So, it's a win-win situation for both the gamers and the corporations. Why doesn't this trend of "Let's see how good we can make the game look, nevermind the gameplay" trend going to end?
So unless he's vulnerable to a specific magic my party member has, I should just lay back and heal? This is the first really difficult boss of the game that I've run into. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the video.
@avenger1000 he is not vulnerable to any magic. You have to attack him with the Masamune sword and combination powers. If you're playing New Game + you can use black armor/plates to minimize his Shadow magic, but if not, it's better to level up.
I remember the time when I first bought Chrono Trigger for the DS and I faced Magus,I was like, So this is it. And when he kept casting spells I was like Holy Shit! Lol Magus was always a beast in that gameXD
exactly. That was always a pain for me because he can cast a veriety of spells and you never know which one he'll do. And his Darkmatter move packs a punch as well.

I found this a lot easier when I had Marle instead of Lucca, because of Aura Whirl, but I also had the triple tech move which did about 1134 damage each time.

magus was very tough and very tricky especially when i first fought him back in 96. i lost to him at least 4 times during my first quest and his darkmatter spell is certainly no jok doing as much damage as close to 300 hp without the new game plus crap.
back in '96 I thought almost all the bosses were pretty easy except that guy with the two hands on top of the mountain...I realize now that it's just because I loved the fighting so much that I fought every unnecessary enemy I could...marvelous game design IMO
Oh yah don't get me wrong, I did that as well. Realizing that though I didn't cheese the battles. Well actually it's pretty hard to cheese Magus..he forces a long good fight.
Actually, he's pretty easy. At first, I was all like, "No! I used the wrong magic!", but later all I did was have Frog and Marle with me and ocasionally hit him with frog. I also used Aura Cyclone to heal. I only lost Marle, but I resurrected her next turn. No problem with this boss.
I haven't played this game in years but I'm pretty sure I beat this guy at party level 11. Frog, Crono, and Robo. Spire is ridiculously powerful, and Robo can deal a good amount of damage. Sometimes I did it with Marle, letting her heal while Crono and Frog beat on him. It's also fun beating this guy in one hit on New Game + lol
I beat him on my second try on the DS version. Just have Marle and Chrono keep healing with Aura Whirl and then have Frog attack. Have Chrono and Marle attack when he lowers his attack to use his cheap Dark Matter spell, attack with them. Also attack with Chrono and Marle when your HP is relatively full and he makes himself weak to ice or lightning. He isn't easy to beat but he won't be so insanely difficult this way. I know, Marle is annoying, but...she's useful.
I used Chrono, Frog, and Robo at levels 26, 25, and 26, respectively, and beat him on my first try. During the first half of the battle, don't worry too much about how fast you're damaging him, just get a shot in when you can and heal when you can't. Once he gets ready to start Dark Matter, use their strongest techs as fast as possible. Don't use double techs because it will take too long. I pounded away with Cleave, Slurp Slash, and Robo Tackle, and he eventually fell.
i trained till i had the triple tech which is with frog luca and crono (lightning 2 water2 and fire 2) it helped a lot plus you should be higher lvl then this :| ((HUGE game Hint: you can get 99 megaelixirs from the monkeys in the tyranosaur place by stealing(also with snakes in black omen)
this boss isnt the hardest in the game, just use chrono frog and marle and he is pretty easy, attack of course with frog to lower his defense, and when he is weak to ice or lightning, use chrono and marle, other than that when you are hurt use the aura whirl spell to heal everybody. if you do this, then magus is pretty easy, but can still take a little while to beat..
yea ok, chrono trigger is easy compared to other rpgs, and yea i know if you just keep leveling up that its easy, i was like level 19 when i beat magus and i beat him pretty easy.
@jabravens52 Final Fantasy 7 is all about out of battle strategy. With the right materia combinations things get much easier. You don't have that luxury in Chrono Trigger.
Yeah, well thats where you make things a bit harder and do things without materia, it's a hell of a lot harder, true you can't do that in chrono trigger but with a good strategy you can beat bosses at a low level.. It's all opinion though
It's nice to see someone who is willing to post videos of RPG bosses where they aren't massively overleveled. It seems like most people on Youtube only want to post videos of themselves slaughtering bosses with an overpowered party.
That said, this party is my favourite to use for this fight when I DO overlevel. It's cool to be able to hit Magus no matter what his barrier is, although it takes a fair bit of grinding to get Frog to learn Water2 so you can use Delta Storm for the Shadow Barrier.
I haven't played Chrono Trigger in forever, but I already know I didn't fight this boss, he looks super hard, and it seems as if Crono lucked out after Dark Matter just because his HP is high. Are you under leveled, or is this the way it's supposed to go?
That's not really a trick... more like Powerleveling and overleveling, why overlevel? Why not play with a bit off challenge instead of blasting through the game? I did mostly for fun and I didn't want to overlevel, so I didn't, and let people see the hard way off beating some bosses.
first of all: magus is the best char with the best music theme in the whole game!
now... a suggestion? a party of frog crono and robo... why? triple raid =D (possibly the first triple tech you will get, and it's really useful in that part of the game, spam when he's going to use dark matter)
hes not hard. if u know how to beat him and what attacks to use u can be him like nothing. i have played chrono trigger like 25 times and hes one of the easiest boss to beat. also next time try using marle and her haste that helps alot. and attack him using masamune only for a while and put the rest in defense. then when u weaken him you go on a onslaught.
I trained alot more by the time I fought Magus, I already had Water, Fire and Lightning 2. He was a peice of cake, just gotta take some extra time to gain some levels.

i've done it at I believe 14. my strategy was a bit diferent though, i used chrono robo and frog. usualyl I had frog and robo heal and hit with single tech elemental attacks. Frog attacked on off turns w/ masamune.
People who haven't played CT in while either think it is insanely amazing or... well actually they all think that! But you have to remember that, even though it is a great game, it isn't perfect. This was a great boss battle though!

you did very well for a lvl 16 taking on magus... when I did it I was lvl 33....although all tht time could have been put to better use but hey, we have our gaming ways.
Well, that's just dumb. Without powerleveling, you usually don't get Luminaire until the Ocean Palace. Leveling up that much...it takes all the fun and challenge out of the fight.
exactly plus you couldnt get enuff tech points to be even with your level, i just weakened magus iwth masamune and magic the he started darkmatter attacks so i had frog constantly heal and robo robotackle and i ran out of revives so crono was dead
If you travel to the time of Ayla there is a place where it rains, when it rains, nuus comes out and they give you 30 tech point for fighting against them.
I like that you make videos of all your boss fights. But don't you think you should have levelled up a bit more before going into a boss fight? Nice choice between marle and lucca though. ^-^
Pack up lots of Mid-Tonics, let my other 2 party members die (Frog remaining), and then hack away using physical attacks (use magic when he switches to a wrong defense). I did this with Frog at level 20.
You should be able to take off 500HP every time in the intervals when Magus uses Dark Matter.
Really cheap, makes the battle easy as hell (but kinda tedious).
I always waited until I learned the dual tech spire. This seemed to make the match go by fairly easily. By then, you should also have access to Fire sword 2.
What happened to character design since those days? Nowadays you're lucky, if even a game's main character is memorable let alone a whole party.

this battle isnt too hard at all, actually chrono trigger is an easy game, my fav rpg is ff7 and its got a lot harder bosses than this

Every RPG are "Easy" games if you grind to a high lvl for every boss. I'm at low level here and that makes it a lot harder.

yea ok, chrono trigger is easy compared to other rpgs, and yea i know if you just keep leveling up that its easy, i was like level 19 when i beat magus and i beat him pretty easy.

@jabravens52 Final Fantasy 7 is all about out of battle strategy. With the right materia combinations things get much easier. You don't have that luxury in Chrono Trigger.

Yeah, well thats where you make things a bit harder and do things without materia, it's a hell of a lot harder, true you can't do that in chrono trigger but with a good strategy you can beat bosses at a low level.. It's all opinion though

definitely! i love the music of the battle. and he takes lots of strategy. i would always switch between marle and lucca
but also the fact is when i played i only had lightning2 so it was really annoying

It's nice to see someone who is willing to post videos of RPG bosses where they aren't massively overleveled. It seems like most people on Youtube only want to post videos of themselves slaughtering bosses with an overpowered party.
That said, this party is my favourite to use for this fight when I DO overlevel. It's cool to be able to hit Magus no matter what his barrier is, although it takes a fair bit of grinding to get Frog to learn Water2 so you can use Delta Storm for the Shadow Barrier.

I haven't played Chrono Trigger in forever, but I already know I didn't fight this boss, he looks super hard, and it seems as if Crono lucked out after Dark Matter just because his HP is high. Are you under leveled, or is this the way it's supposed to go?

Under-leveled, if you are normally lvled all chars will survive Dark Matter.

I see no one mentioned the nu trick in 65 million bc since with that you can use that last tier moves and kill magus or even giga gaia in like 2 mins.
Just use the nu trick in the hunting grounds 30 tech points a pop 90 per area run back and over and over.
Once your done with the nu trick just do it to crono get his max move get magus to light weakness and nuke him once or twice.
Hes a real easy boss the next one after him the one with azala is way harder

That's not really a trick... more like Powerleveling and overleveling, why overlevel? Why not play with a bit off challenge instead of blasting through the game? I did mostly for fun and I didn't want to overlevel, so I didn't, and let people see the hard way off beating some bosses.

first of all: magus is the best char with the best music theme in the whole game!
now... a suggestion? a party of frog crono and robo... why? triple raid =D (possibly the first triple tech you will get, and it's really useful in that part of the game, spam when he's going to use dark matter)

hes not hard. if u know how to beat him and what attacks to use u can be him like nothing. i have played chrono trigger like 25 times and hes one of the easiest boss to beat. also next time try using marle and her haste that helps alot. and attack him using masamune only for a while and put the rest in defense. then when u weaken him you go on a onslaught.

I trained alot more by the time I fought Magus, I already had Water, Fire and Lightning 2. He was a peice of cake, just gotta take some extra time to gain some levels.

i've done it at I believe 14. my strategy was a bit diferent though, i used chrono robo and frog. usualyl I had frog and robo heal and hit with single tech elemental attacks. Frog attacked on off turns w/ masamune.

People who haven't played CT in while either think it is insanely amazing or... well actually they all think that! But you have to remember that, even though it is a great game, it isn't perfect. This was a great boss battle though!

Quick question... I use the zsnes emulator, and it has the record option. But how do you play the videos outside of the emulator itself? Is that what you did, or am I talking nonsense?

Well, that's just dumb. Without powerleveling, you usually don't get Luminaire until the Ocean Palace. Leveling up that much...it takes all the fun and challenge out of the fight.

exactly plus you couldnt get enuff tech points to be even with your level, i just weakened magus iwth masamune and magic the he started darkmatter attacks so i had frog constantly heal and robo robotackle and i ran out of revives so crono was dead

If you travel to the time of Ayla there is a place where it rains, when it rains, nuus comes out and they give you 30 tech point for fighting against them.
You can kill them anytime, just when it rains.
It kind of helps a lot. ^^

I like that you make videos of all your boss fights. But don't you think you should have levelled up a bit more before going into a boss fight? Nice choice between marle and lucca though. ^-^

My strategy:
Pack up lots of Mid-Tonics, let my other 2 party members die (Frog remaining), and then hack away using physical attacks (use magic when he switches to a wrong defense). I did this with Frog at level 20.
You should be able to take off 500HP every time in the intervals when Magus uses Dark Matter.
Really cheap, makes the battle easy as hell (but kinda tedious).

I always waited until I learned the dual tech spire. This seemed to make the match go by fairly easily. By then, you should also have access to Fire sword 2.

never bothered with lucca, always found marle was much more effective. aura whirls were always key for me beating magus.
