  • WWI is following me around for the last year now. Since the end of the first series of Downton Abbey. I've gone to see the play Warhorse, the second series of Downton Abbey, debating the theme of heroes with my sister, who mentioned this song, the movie Warhorse and the BBC adaption of Sebastian Faulks' "Birdsong" and something else along the way. But as I watched Warhorse and Birdsong recently, this song went through my head. Interesting how things stick to be recalled at a later date.

  • Schönes Lied.Aber auch sehr traurig

  • An entire generation of men human beings were destroyed by that war, no matter the side and no matter whether they were actually killed or not.

It is a shame we truly never learned the lessons of the two world wars.

  • We always HAVE TO remember WW I+II and what the EU did for us. Despite of corrupt politicians and the "finance mafia". UK, Germany, Ireland, France and the other countries in the EU should never be divided. United we stand!

  • @MultiSususasa United, we will fight united and die divided mate

  • Tony Blair claimed this was one of his favourite songs. Then he followed America into their `oil wars` in Afghanistan and Iraq. He obviously was immune to the words of this song. Of course, he used other peoples children to fight these `oil wars`.

  • dont know if anyones heard it, but the dropkick murphys covered it, and did a really good job, and no they didnt punk it.

  • A major part of the trickery and propaganda of the ruling-class is to pursuade everyone there is such a thing as the "national interest". In fact, the interests of the ruling class and the working class are diametrically opposed. There is no common intrest.

We need to stop thinking in "national" terms and start thinking in "class" terms.

    Workers of the world, Unite!

  • There is no such thing as "the English". There is the english ruling-class (the capitalist class) who make all the decisions including who they want to go to war with, and there is the english working-class who take no part in such decisions but who end up being tricked into doing the fighting and dying. And it's the same in all countries.

  • @redpaulxx There is every chance Wullie is a Scot. His family like millions of others in the Highlands would have been kicked out of homes,by greedy landlords to places like Oz and Canada make way for sheep. Isn't it amazing to think all those young lads, decendants of such crimes came back to fight for the mother country.

  • first class watp

  • @wil979 why do you need to make it about religion and football? fuck off mate

  • The song's not just about soldiers...it's about war, where the vast majority of those killed are innocent civilians...but military personnel. Lest we Forget this fact....

  • @barrach7 its about ww1 ,were the vast majority killed were ordinary soldiers ,,although a lot of civilians were to, most of the men ,youths and boys were led to believe it would be all over by christmas , then descended into hell on earth , its about the futility of war ,half the young lads who joined up were innocent and green themselves ,i doubt they would of volunteered if they had known what was to happen,it was wholesale murder .

  • @TheMightOfTheEnglish

Obviously it's about WWI. I thought eveyone knew that. Agree with what you said - except that, like in most wars, most killed weren't military personnel. It's about time that the ridiculous, egocentric, flag-waving, patriotic, bullshit was finally evolved out of mankind. Flagwavers and government-kissing xemophobes are sick, retarded gits. Sadly, it's all part of 'being human'

  • @TheMightOfTheEnglish

P.S: The Might of the English. I hope that's tongue in cheek...such patriotic sentiments, if genuinely thought are unfounded and ultimately lead to xenophobic wars like WWI....

  • @barrach7 what was tongue in cheek , it was true , most who joined kitcheners volunteers were clueless , they joined up in their hundreds of thousands some as young as 14 , never before had old tactics still being used in modern warfare , thousands of men walking towards mass ranks of machine guns ,20,000 or so the first day of the somme dead, i doubt they would of been so quick to volunteer if they had known

  • @TheMightOfTheEnglish

absolutely agree there The Might. I'd say 'Thank God' that we've now got mass communication to allow free-er thought...though going by the media vultures around today, I wonder if it's made much of a difference. Slainte/Cheers

  • @TheMightOfTheEnglish yup, and for that wholesale murder you can thank the might of the English

  • @hXc232 you ,english? it was called great britain, with scots irish, welsh MP,s all involved , all sides used the mass infantry attacks ,and i suppose you can blame the high command ie haig .for repeated charges ,and waste of lives, we were one of the last to get involved in ww1 , bar america , years later ,it was germany and the kaiser s aggression you can thank, wasnt us who attacked belgium, and france , we didnt start ww1

  • @TheMightOfTheEnglish yeah but for how long have the English been crusading all over the world trying to conquer it? fair enough they aren't the only ones, but i just despise imperialism in every form

  • @hXc232 spain , france, portugal all had world empires ,well before us, we were a little island surrounded by enemies who wanted to destroy us, we did what we did ,right or wrong for survival,we never went out to conquer the world, as certain other nations did,can never recall any king or queen making announcements to that fact, people thought the world was flat , its all very well looking at what developed in hindsight ,the empire wasnt perfect by a long shot , but many benefitted also

  • @hXc232 america claimed they were anti imperialists ,yet invaded cuba ,puerto rico, the phillipines and committed genocide ,especially in the phillipines , in the 20th century after ww2 america demanded the end of imperialism, only because they themselves wanted to trade with these countries ,their the biggest imperialists of them all, african tribes were warring with each other before the europeans came, and are still warring now, they may be free ,but are they really better of now .

  • @TheMightOfTheEnglish dude you don't need to tell me about the Americans lol, you're preaching to the choir here, but yeah i see your point

  • We must remember all of the fallen in all wars it is the politicions who start the and the troops finish it

  • We must remember all of the fallen in all wars it is the politicions who start the and the troops finish it

  • lovely hearing the song in English and German makes u sit and think of the horrors of war

  • Brings a tear to the eye every time it's sung. Very thought-provoking song in a perfect, contemplative tempo.

  • I love that he sung it in German too...

  • #3 - MY girlfriend's mother was Eric's sister, and lived in the same house where Eric first learned to play guitar and write songs. The next time I see her I'll ask her to share a few stories which she would be happy for me to post on Youtube. In closing, I feel it only proper to say how much of a lovely family I had the fortune to spend time with back then : being very creative people, who appreciated others and who took pleasure in their work and leisure.. Thanks to isthisnametook. :-)

  • #2 - From the stories I heard about Eric he sounded like a really nice guy. My girlfriend played guitar well and she told me that the first song she had learned was "Puff the Magic Dragon" which Eric had taught her. One time he and his wife travelled from their home in Australia to play in Scotland and visit his family. I had the opportunity to meet him, but didn't do so for some reason - I can't remember what I did instead, whereas I would now hold a meeting with him as a treasured memory.

  • #1 Hi, all! :-) I normally wouldn't post such a personal thought as this one, but listening to this song brings back many memories for me. Many years ago I was involved romantically with a lovely girl who was Eric Bogle's niece, I was into heavy metal music at the time, and with youthfull egotism refused to listen to anyone play who didn'thave long hair, which disallowed me from appreciating the deeply sensitive and haunting music that Eric had written, though I would often hear it playing.

  • the words in german make it worth the tears. Nrxt time put the warmongering bosses in the front line

  • Oh my... Is the song still available without the german lyrics??

  • @bambinonero clearly you don't get it, must be a yank who can''t remember having to fight for their country. perhaps yolu support bin laden?as he doesn't give honour to his opponents.....got you sussed.

  • es wurden alle verarscht! deutsche, franzosen, engländer und amerikaner. R.I.P. allen soldaten der beiden weltkriege.

  • Who the Fuck disliked this? why? although i can't find a eric bogle green feild of france without the german bit.

  • The greatest song on the futility of war, it always sends shivers down my spine. It should be the compulsory lullaby for all would-be warlords and glorious leaders, and sung in all military colleges.

  • Lions led by donkeys

  • This is one of my all time favourite songs...previously my favourite version was the one sung by the Fureys. Hearing the man who wrote the song singing (and the original words), is a gift! As an anti-war song (and sympathiser) the counterpoint is German speaks volumes about the abject stupidity of war. Both sides lost, all sides died over what amounted to a family spat. Brilliant video and priceless treasure~Thank you so much for posting!

  • @Marte1618

I once went to a military cemetary in France and read in the different languages on the graves of 18 - 20 year old soldiers, "why did yóu have to die" "we miss you so much".,"you were so young"...........I wish peace to the souls of all soldiers, but I would even more wish that there would be no soldiers and that they could just have all become what they had been dreaming of becoming......and remain alive!

  • I'm very glad to hear the German lyrics. Wouldn't mind hearing it in French, Hungarian, Turkish or any other language that a WWI combatant might have spoken- this is one of the most human and humanitarian songs I know.

  • @BaldGrace I was lost for a comment, apart from "thanks for hearing it in German, too".. Yours is the comment I wish I'd made!

  • @edmundus1581

Thanks, I'm glad to know that others agree.

  • At the risk of being accused of being a pedant, this song is about World War One.

If you listen to the open lyrics it says You were only 16 when you joined the great fallen in 1915!!

It's got nothing to do with Hitler. It is simply a song about the futility of war.

  • @MrAussierocker True

  • @MrAussierocker At the risk of being accused of being a pedant, if you listen to the lyrics it says you were only NINETEEN when you joined the GLORIOUS fallen in nineteen SIXTEEN.

  • @SchmittyRKD Yes you are correct. Obviously had a touch of typoscerosis and reversed the numbers. My main point was to point out the dates were for WW1.

  • how powerful.

  • Stunning thanks for the posting, no matter what language you use war stinks

  • This song just leaves me cold......children sent to fight for the folly of old men before thier childhood has hardly began....the flower of nations cut down in thier youth while old men called Generals point thier fingers at maps , at patches of dirty worthless soil that must be taken and never mind the cost in human life. This song really somes up the folly of war , while l must quote words from another great anti war song " when will they ever learn "

  • Beautiful version acknowledging the fact that thousands of young men on both sides died for WHAT??

  • @MultiGeraghty thousands?

  • @artfulowl02061987 Sorry... Hundreds of thousands millions?? Lots anyway!!

  • The 5 people who disliked this must be really fond of war

  • stand over any war grave and remember a person is there the lyrics are so true saw the France graves our own graves life's are gone forever don't go to ANY war

  • stand over any war grave and remember a person is there the lyrics are so true saw the France graves our own graves lifes are gone forever don't go to ANY war

  • For some reason, the end of the German chorus gives me the chills.

"Und Du hast ihnen alles gegeben,

Deine Kraft, Deine Jugend, Dein Leben."

"And you have given them everything,

Your strength, your youth, your life."

  • Superb and emotive! Anyone with a shred of empathy for armed forces in conflict will realise that this song could be sung in any language and in any uniform. There is no 'them' or 'us' when it comes to the fighting forces dying at the political will of any country. They are all victims and should be respected and remembered as such.

  • My German is not that good, could anyone send me the lyrics translated please??? (from german to english) cheers/Tks/Danke

  • @remeclerk Here are the German lyrics, put them in Google Translate. If the video uploader sees this, please put the link in the description.

  • This song always gives me goosebumps - Gansehaut pur!

One of the best anti-war songs ever written - Eine der besten Anti-kriegs Lieder.

  • Ein gutes Lied, möge es seine Wirkung tun,und zeigen das Krieg mit Blut und Tränen geschrieben wird.

  • @MrJudo99 May I ask if you speak any German? Judging by your stupid comment, I guess not. Otherwise you'd know better...

  • @MrJudo99 You are absolutely right. When Hitler decided to invade France in 1916, he had Eric Bogle compose this song for him and from then on used it to summon his gigantic robot dinosaurs. Oh wait, different story, got that mixed up. My bad.

Seriously… "Doch es finden sich mehr und mehr Menschen bereit / diesen Krieg zu verhindern, es ist an der Zeit" - obviously in support of Hitler.

  • @Naethdren

Ummmmm, you do realize the Hitler ruled Germany in WW2 and this song and video refers to WW1?

  • @slyder25 No, no. You got that wrong. The Gigantic Robot Dinosaur incident took place in 1916, when Hitler and Bogle conspired to take over France.

Actually – hold it, I mixed it up again. Yes, you may be right, Hitler may have been elected chancellor in 1933, about thirteen and a half years after the Treaty of Versailles. Then it must have been Adenauer who led the Charge of the Dinosaurs against the Maginot line in 1916!

But you have to admit that this manoeuvre was pure genius.

  • @slyder25 That's right, THE Hitler ruled Germany in WW2. WW1 was another one, however.

  • @MrJudo99

Isn't that funny what a 16 years old Adolf Hitler should have devcided in 1916!

Ist schon toll, was der 16-jährige Adolf Hitler 1916 entschieden haben soll.

  • @charleypride2002 Well, Hitler was born in 1889 and he fought as a German soldier (yet Austrian citizen) in France (1916 in the battle of the Somme and later near Ypres, amongst others), but he was a common soldier and deployed as a messenger, at that time. He was decorated for braveness, but, for being unpopular among his comrades due to his strange character, never advanced.

  • @SiggiNebel So many lives would have been spared if that wanker had died when he was wounded in WW1

  • @rhart49 It's strange. So many brilliant man died, so many bulllets and shells hit and killed, but, of all soldiers, he survived that war and maybe that's one of the reasons why ghe thought that "providence" was on his side and played his game as if he couldn't possibly lose, even against all odds.

  • @Naethdren Uhhm, hitler was a simple foot soldier in ww1 he wernt a bloody leader u tarker lol

  • @Grallos1232 But… but… what about the Charge of the Dinosaurs? And the Hitler-Bogle conspiracy?

  • @MrJudo99 i forgive your stupidity because of your age

  • Soldiers rocks, politicians sucks!

It has always been and will always be the politians, who will create hate between peaceful nations and who will betray their own soldiers after the war. We should not damn the soldiers, but those bloody politians. As the courage of soldiers is still the same like 1916 it´s also the foolish thinking of politians.

  • Few things have made me weep..... The last post, Eric's other famous song 'The Band played Waltzing Matilda, bagpipes at a funeral, my fathers death and this song. Whether or not you support the war, or any war, remember the sacrifice of all those affected....... Remember the innocent who died when not protected, remember the innocent who should have been protected and still died. This song captures it nicely.

  • Beautiful song. My grandfather served in the british indian army in burma and two granduncles served in north africa all in ww2. none bore any hatred towards the men they fought. the german soldiers were victims of their own government and it is touching to see them remembered thus. the saddest thing is that strong political and religious convictions which are the percusors to apalling slaughter are still strong and spreading in todays world. spread the word lest it happens all over again!cheers

  • @Andre8869 Actually in WWI, at some occasions the soldiers of both sides agreed kind of private cease-fires, walked accross the lines, exchanged presents and so on.After such incidents, the units were often deployed to other parts of the front, as the commanding officers doubted whether they were still willing to fight against each other. At other parts of the front the soldiers sometimes came to silent accordance only to do a kind of mock fighting, by shooting into the air etc.

  • I still laugh that the same lie was told to both side which was "lets defeat the agressor and not to worry lad God is on our side" I think God looked away from the earth during ww1 and ww2 as so many people butchered each other for no reason may they all Rest In Peice

  • Awsome

  • My CDT teacher did a wondeful cover of this recently. I still need to pester him about recording it... x

  • =D =)

  • What a beautiful version of the song

  • Love the Men, Support the Men, & live with the Men who have Fought for us, seen what no one ever wanted to, and died for us, in a war that never should have been.

  • he was the 1st one to fall on the british side, so I have been told, I may be very very wrong, Iron is I understand the German, all in ww1 were poor bastards, led by lambs, and both sides were (Lowen) Lions

  • I am proberly one of the few people to say that i had family in almost everyone of the armies, my farthers side we in the Bristish army, my mums mums side were in the the german army and my mums dad was on the Russian side,

So i prefer this version of the video because it gives the German side as well even though their king started the war the young men that died were inocent,

All war should end how many more mothers, wives and children should be denied before we stop, RIP 1914-1918 1939-1945

  • Oh man, this song just... I wish it was the war to end all wars. But no, the senseless violence of humanity, and its need to always be the best will continue to fester and boil inside us, until one day a great leader has enough of it, and simply bombs us. Thats how we'll end.

There will be no victorious dead, just the dead.

  • Great to heat it in English & German. Perhaps it should be sung in all the languages of the world to get the message over to all people!!

  • @bornagainfolker

It may be nice to hear, but I don't like the German lyrics very much. They are not very true to the English ones, poetically rather inferior and have got a certain penetrant and just too explicit peace mouvement touch. They just don't reach the intensity of the English verses and are after all kind of non-commital - we're all for peace, arent we? Well-meant is the opposite of good.

  • @SiggiNebel "...not very true to the English ones..., a ....

explicit peace mouvement touch... kind of non-commital - we're all for peace, arent we? "

One of the reasons I think this one became well known in Germany in the 1980s rather than The Band played Waltzing Mathilda (search here at YT), also by Eric Bogle, which is rather more apropos these days (re AFG) with its direct look at what happened in the field and at home.

  • @SiggiNebel : I still like this song a lot! :-) The english lyrics transport a very powerful message.

  • @CaveatVideot I'm a bit confused. I like the English lyriks, too (in the whole, a few line are a bit sentimental for my taste; in this repect "The Band played ..." maybe more stainless and realistic), and tried to point out why I don't this German translation very much.

  • I love this video!!

I heard of this song from Celtic Thunder. They sing a very nice version of that sing. So, i wanted to find some videos about this song. Well, I just happened to run across this version. I just totally fell in love with it!

  • Makes you think of the wasted lives, and of those that are yet to follow.

  • Eric is one of the best at writing this type of song - It would be hard to find another song that stirs the emotions and pain of war like this one.

The German addition is very appropriate... their sons suffered as well.

  • Peace between Britain and Germany forever. This song is a symbol for this.

Greets to all british people from germany.

  • Ganz klar: Eines der besten Lieder...

Ich hoffe, dass es nie wieder Weltkriege geben wird und dass sich so viele Menschen gegen den Krieg wehren, will schon etwas heißen.

  • @Ugligawugli Du hast wohl recht. Ich, als Schotte, weiss schon was in meiner Familie passiert ist. Und, wie gesagt, hoffentlich nie wieder. Aber schau mal was heutzutage in Afghanistan abgeht! Es ist zum Kotzen.

  • A master wordsmith who can deliver scathing social commentary

    May they RIP

  • @911dreda11 .... you fool ... its not cause the *****ing germans ... ww1 was cause the ... germans the english the france the russian and the austrians ............ and and and ...........

  • This is GREAT!

  • Interesting to see the picture of the Australians giving the Red Baron Von Richthofen his funeral @0:41.Full military honours.

  • God Bless Humankind.....simple!

  • No more European bloodshed. Lest we forget.

  • fuck the ira

  • @aggyuvf

You're an idiot. ALL forces are bad, you eejit. Think about the lyrics and LEARN sonny...run along now!

  • I had to learn both versions in school when I was 12. I hated it in german, because it is more graphic than the original. The two don't have all that much in common with each other aside from the melody.

Still don't like it much in german.

Can't finish listening and should not have in the first place, but I thought it was english only.

  • Danke dafür!

Es gibt so viele Versionen von diesem Lied, aber diese ist zweifellos eine der besten.

  • @Biertourist Nice. This is original, like the German inclusion.

May we nver forget those that fought for THEIR country. Bugger those that sent them!

See John McDermott and "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" Redgum and "Only 19"

  • Beautiful. And sad. Terrible times but what is even sadder is that even today war remains way too common. Waste of life. Only when the power of love overcomes the love of power will there be peace - Jimmy Hendrix. Peace and love.

  • Stunning! The pictures, and sung both in German and English: I'm sure this is fullestway Eric Bogle intended this song - for ALL humankind - for the utter senseless folly of war: I love the German - Many thanks isthisnametook!!

  • And I love the Americans, the British and the France. I´m glad we are friends and allies now =)

A moving song, I hate those politians who send those young men into battle to slaughter eachother.

  • isthisnametook sure did an excellent job, having the inspiration and skill to juxtapose Eric Bogle and Hannes Wader singing together, didn't he! Guenter51 posted Hannes Wader singing the entire song as it translates into German: Es ist an der Zelt! War is hell for ALL humans. Thanks for your comment - May we - all counries - hopefully one day learn. Glad we have Eric Bogel and Hannes Wader to help us see the folly -

  • @LindsayCurran I feel sure this is entirely in Bogle's spirit. I shouldn't wonder if Bogle and Wader have not had a chat in connection with Wader's version - among many other chats over the years.

  • I get a lump in my throat eaach time I listen to this. This is my first time listening to this version and I think the German part adds a different slant. this song is as relevant today as it was way back. Some other versions on this site bring you right up to the present day visually and I recommend them. I don't want to get political, but, our troops should not be East. My thoughts are with them and their families.

  • @Wanch1e1ady Nice, I agree about the german message(don't know what he sings, but am sure they do)

  • @357HFC I try to summarize the german part:

Verse 2 is about the question, if this young guy ever loved a girl (even in the physical way). The singer excludes this, because he was to young to get the chance -> "You have been a soldier to die, not be be young!"

Then he reflects his thoughts. The young soldier might have thought about just taking what he misses, if he gets the chance, but he was to ashamed of himself just by thinking about it.

  • Verse 4 is translated one to one in the video.

The german version has been sung by Hannes Wader first and contains 4 or 5 verses. Some are pretty touching. So he things about the way this soldier might have died, tattered by shells but still running on the dulls (right word in english??) of his legs, crying and screaming for his mom while he was dieing in pain.

  • @Biertourist The word you are searching for is "stumps".Always a touching song, different perspective hearing it in German. We are not all so different really.

  • @357HFC Another part is about the typical mistake of WWI, that the soldier at the front thought, that the man 100 m in front of him is his enemy, but in real it was the man 100 km behind them, who send him into battle.

Sorry, if my terms are faulty...

  • @Biertourist You are dead right mate. Bloody politicians start wars, quite often incompetents run them ( especially during WW1) and normal blokes die in them.

  • Extrem guter text.

  • Sehr gute Idee dieses Lied in Englisch UND in Deutsch zu singen. Danke.

  • Very touching! Bring our boys back!

  • let's listen to song ,lest we forget what a war does.

  • A wonderful rendition and the German lyrics fit perfect to this song.Very touching. Both singers are excellent!!!

  • Is that a photo from Richthofen's funeral at 0:50 ?

  • I hope he would appreciate the German Lyrics - given his views, it would inconsistent not to. We need to recognize that the German dead were victims like the Allied Dead

  • @robbierunciman

As someone whose Grandfather and his six brothers were volunteers for Scotland in the 1st World War, whose Polish side of the family suffered horribly in the Second Wrold War...I have to say that my family would fully agree. My Grandfather realised that Germans are people, are people, are people.....! God Bless humankind - and God Rest for good xenophobic 'pride' and 'honour'. Wonderful version of the song. God Bless (by whatever name we call Him).

  • @robbierunciman exactly, the peoples accross the world died fighting for those too privilaged to take part in the butchering

  • @robbierunciman

    Absolutely wonderfully said.

  • I don't think Eric would appreciate german lyrics in this song...

  • Well, that's what you get for thinking.

  • @bambinonero He said its his favourite version.

  • Perhaps you misunderstand why Mr Bogle wrote the lyrics...for all humankind. If not, perhaps the song's wasted on you. with absolute respect, it's perhaps worth considering what the song actually means.

  • I didn't wish to say anything xenophobic, sorry! It just doesn't sound right to me...

  • Hi bambinonero. My apologies as some things in text may be misinterpretted/over-interpretted.

  • The lyrics of the German cover version were written by Hannes Wader.

But the German singer in this video is singer of the German folk band Wacholder!

  • Das deutsche ist auch sehr deutlich und schön gesungen. Bravo!

  • Thats right, Hannes Wader translated the text in german.

  • yeah but wader pushed it more to a antiwarsong as it was before

  • For sure that is not only Eric Bogle singing there, The German text is sung by another person. Sounds for me like Hannes Wader, who translated that into German.

  • Odd, but prefer most other versions, the artists seem to give the melody and its delivery the greater diginity the lyrics deserve. But, he is the writer so we have to doff our caps to him for that, for sure.

  • We have just honoured those who fought and died in the two great World wars, and Korea, and Viet Nam (I am Canadian, so I don't such a connection there) and, Bosnia, and Serbia, and Afghanistan, and Irag, and... My God! When will it end! I am ex-militaria, and I have nephews being deployed to Kandahar. While I respect the goal, is it really winnable? I would hope, but....!

  • What a horrific century since August of 1914.

    May the 21st be better.

  • A fitting tribute to ALL the fallen

    They will not be forgotten

    R.I.P.

  • Perhaps it's worth noting that msot of the fallen weren't in uniform, but were innocent civilans over the past century. Perhaps they are even more worthy of our prayers.

  • i'm geman....and in this video the german language has a terrible ending...at the end of the words there is a Zzzz....i don't know how to explain^^

but that's not how we speak in reality ;) that is this vid....

  • i dont know much german at all but i though the ending on this song is german was something like this

"Only the cross remained as only trace of your life, but men swear an oath to fight, but be watchful, as man will fall again.

that all i know but I am prob wrong, but there is another few lines in this song?

  • Yes, there are some interesting thoughts in the german version different from the original. in the first verse the singer is suggesting the solder was old enough to die, but to young to find out what´s love. And in the refrain is a connection to today saying still everyone is getting fooled by his own government.

  • There is a 6:35 version on YT called "Es ist an der Zeit - Hannes Wader". The conclusion of the german point of view is the same: All the dying was senseless.

  • We are not a warrior race. We are not born with hatred it is taught to us by our parents, friends, leaders etc. Nobody in this country was concerned with the Arab world until a few terrorists committed their crime. Now we have such a hatred for them that we cannot see the forest for the trees. If we can see them as just average citizens as we are, then maybe we would not be so gung ho to fight them.

  • Yes we are warriors by nature. Its not like someone decided it'd be cool to go to war one day, its in our nature. I don't think anyone ever tells you to hate people and fight them. Look at kids who can't understand, small kids, when they're mad at each other they hit each other, and no ones programmed them for anything. I mean even pre talking. We by birth are warriors, every human of every race.

  • I might say, rather, that none of us is without sin.

  • Strange word, 'warrior' - often used as if it's something noble. Perhaps it's worse to recognise animalistic reponses, but then to act on them anyway...

  • A warrior can also be someone fighting to save his people from oppression (or her people). Not everything can be solved with words. Not all are aggressors even. Warrior is a noble word. There will always be warped people and groups wishing harm on others, so Warriors are always needed, for good or bad. I'm sure if your neighborhood was invaded by (Insert a country name here) you'd have a lot of respect for the warriors animalisticly clearing you a path to safety. Context my friend, context.
