  • 1. Which brand is the bivi sac? 2. loose the 58 pattern water bottle & switch to the American version, you loose about 200ml of fluid but the slim design is better. 3. the hexi stove is the bomb! Ive tried several different methods to start fires- chemicals are best. 4. Econmy aside- go with a Ray Mears style Parang

  • @expara1

1- The Bivi is standard british army issue, the best one available in my opinion. About £25-£30 on ebay. 2 - The Brittish army bottle will always win against the american design as its just better made, no leaks and the 200ml extra can sometimes be essential. 3 - Yes your right, the hexi is awesome!! : )

4 - The parang Ray uses is no doubt awsome, but there's loads of designs out there, as long as it has a razor edge its not too important on which celebrity uses it ; )

  • Who would have thought a spare of the moment video we recorded over 5 years ago on a crappy Sony Ericsson phone camera would spark so much debate. to be honest if we did this all over again there would be some differences.. for instance.. i wouldn't strike that bloody fire steel with the sharp edge of the knife :-) twas for demonstration purposes you see.. haha.. also i would have included our First Aid Kit too which was in my bag.

  • @Deanread Just re-watched this again. Bless us man, we were young and just getting into it, Was a really helpful vid, and i remember in the early youtube days when this video got more hits than Ray Mears stuff. . . . . .Btw, I love Ray mears, Just putting that out there : )

  • Why you using the sharpened edge on the fire steel?

  • @gooniefan what is the name of the website

  • The crusader cup hold 750 ml. the water bottle hold a little over a litre and the cup goes on the bottom of the bottle not the top.

  • @outdooractivities1 Wow thanks for that, I dont know how this video's managed for nearly 5 years without such acurate infomation ; )

  • Good

  • Good info from 6 years ago that is still completely applicable and valid today... Nice!

  • Nice video, but I think you are carrying wiht repeated items...and were are you going with the machete? no medications (painkillers and so) or a minimal medical kit...I don´t really know if this is the ultimate one

  • pretty good kit pal, I would ditch the machete/parang and replace with an axe one piece estwing is good for the money. also noted that you didn't have a knife unless thats just a given and on you all the time. the bacho laplander is good, (most bacho stuff is excellent their high carbon steel edged tools are great) have you ever tried a silky saw? in my opinion they put everything else to shame for green wood.

  • One good idea is to put to hexi stove and blocks in a sailed bag because the hexi blocks ten to smell of fish if they are the army ones.

  • did you just use your blade to make those sparks . i never Sean anyone do that . nice set up you got there

  • You're supposed to use the back of your knife when striking the firesteel.

  • Get a Petzl head torch. Loads better.

  • @TrousersDPM Nah mate, only the really hi end model petzls are any good, For the price the energizer torch is loads better, also its a better torch than a lot of the petzl's, trust me, i've tried em all. Some people just choose em because of the name ; )

  • @GoonieFan The petzl is more robust. I've had mine about 8 years, payed about 35 quid for it. Worth every penny. I didn't like the hinge on the energizer. There just too flimsy for me. Still, well presented video. Nice one.

  • @TrousersDPM Fair play mate, thanks for watching it : )

  • Awesome vid. Thanks!

  • excellent vid. I like that it's very short and to the point no messing around. I live in the states and have recently started bushcrafting.

  • 5/5

  • Don't use a machete / parang I have a Kukri my uncle brought back from Nepal in 1945 well made and very very effective.

  • 5\5

    excellent gear overview dude

  • I would just like to make the point that due to land laws in the uk you need good kit. We are not allowed the same access to land as other countries and therefore cannot go about building shelters, starting fires etc. Having good kit means you can often stay in the wilds without fear of prosecution. So good vid guys.

  • great vid but strike the fire steel with the back of your knife so not to blunt it and the intence heat weart the steel of your knife even quicker!!

  • did you use the edge of the knife with the firesteel?

    use the back

  • Great clip, short sweet and to the point.(The clip, not you) I'll check out your other clips as I enjoyed this one.Thanks. As for the mora, it's good value. A long time ago (early 1970's) a bloke running a survival course for our platoon passed on a pearl of wisdom, "The best survival knife in the world isn't the biggest , fanciest or most expensive, it's the one you have with you when you need it". He was using what we called a Swedish scout knife & a swiss army Soldier Model pocket knife.

  • @labrat7357 Thank you for your nice comment mate, Glad you enjoyed our vid : )

  • Very good vid dude.

  • @Blulip926 Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it

  • Thanks for the info mate. Glad to see your set up.

  • @anvilock Glad you enjoyed it mate : )

  • @gooniefan

I think the point is that a lot of kids watch this videos and we are going to show ppl how to do things like start fires and what not shouldnt we all do it right

So when this kids that we all know watching wont lite the woods on fire or hurt them selves or others

  • I am sorry but that was a big no no NEVER strike your flint upon ground wet or not the smallest spark can even live under ground for ages and could make a forest fire apart from that keep it up !

  • @stupidfookinshite I'm sure it will be fine mate

  • @GoonieFan we could do with putting annotations on this video Jay :-) so the youtube hatters stop dissing us.

  • @Deanread I agree mate, The ammount of time i've spent explaining stuff to people is unreal, Still at least the majority like it

  • brilliant brilliant video thanks also you should do avideo of your shelter and how to amke it

  • Bomb proof means if it the canteen is full of water and you drop it on a hard surface or the ground, it won't split open.

  • @GoonieFan worked out great. simpler and easier to carry. didnt need water proof stuff. if wool gets wet not only does it keep you warm even if its wet but it dries relitavly fast anyway.

  • Thats a lot of stuff. A lot of unnecessary stuff. Me and 2 of my cousins traveled all over the country (urban, AND wilderness e.g oregon, montana, canada) for 9 months with extra clothes (minimal), a tarp, wool blanket, a pocket knife, lighters, water and food. Managed to be warm, comfortable etc. We made it AND had a blast. think about it... cool vid though

  • @joshgabaldon1 Cool, a wool blanket though??? how did that work out compared to a waterproof bivvi bag with roll matt and sleeping bag inside???

  • @GoonieFan Move over Ray Mears .. Josh Gabaldon is the new messiah :-)

  • LOL! Bomb proof water bottle... that would save ur arse from being blowned up by an IED!

  • @boocolor er. . . . somehow i dont think he ment it as actualy bombproof, but thanks for your comment anyway. i guess that will clear things up for anyone who actually thought a plastic bottle could take an explosion ; )

  • @MrJanesaddiction Thanks for the positive comments

  • whats your opinion of the hand powered chainsaw, i have one of them instead of the folding saw you displayed, its thie webtex warrior hand saw that i have, i dont use it that much unless im taking apart a tree thats gone down so i have bigger stuff to burn off..

  • lol this is almost a complete rendition of ray mear's kit

  • Thats way to much stuff all you need are the Fire steel, Para cord, knife the cup and the water bottle all the rest is just extra weight especially the flashlight

  • @MrJanesaddiction Thank you very much : ) Glad you liked it

  • I wish bushcraft teachers where more accessible in america...too much fast food I suppose. But I know now where I'm gonna move to :D

  • Good, simple, foolproof, and all the barebones items covered. Cheers.

  • @point177 Thanks mate, glad it helped

  • you know if you file the back of the clipper a bit to get a flat edge you'll be able to use that on the firesteel rather than the blade that way it won't get damaged

  • Pretty much exactly the same stuff i take with me, good video thanks

  • dude, if you can light that little stove in whet conditions, u should be able to use its fuel to make a fire in whet conditions using the flint.

  • @Whisper6911 Its called a Crusader cup/mug. Army issue.

  • I might start picking fault with our video now Jay ... Look how fat my head was 4 years ago. What an idiot i am / was :-) ... whoops .. that was pointless criticism too .. oh well

  • @Deanread Ha ha, good lad : )

  • @Mi5anthrop3 ... Yeah that's right, I'm making up for my failings as a man with the machette... I suggest you go and do something similar instead of making pointless inconstructive comments please !!!

  • we've got a machete here . . not for like deforestation but good for like err trimming off erm any insecurities i may be harbouring over my masculinity.

  • @m1santhrop3 Idiot!

  • @m1santhrop3 don't be a git; you got a better kit to demonstrate? lay it out there. don't project your own insecurities on these lads. they're doing good stuff.

  • @C24B9 Cheers mate, thank you

  • So at what point do you start drinking your own urine?

  • @1CME90 you don't. at least, I don't. full-stop, end of sentence.

  • You did a fine job on your "BushCraft Kit Essentials" video. You should work on more of the same type; New Gear, Field/Bush Skills, Etc,... Republicans are returning to the US Senate, which can only be good for the country and its citizens: Gun Owners who steadfastly dislike Eric Holder & Rahm Emanual and their anti-gun rhetoric.

  • I saw a pic posted by a guy with a condom in his kit.Fuck me ay,he wants to rape the wild goats? :))

  • Wow....you obviously are a stupid little immature 10 year old.

  • and why is that smartass?

  • @jasgrip an un-lubricated condom= a storage device for gathering water/food or as a skin covering or as an emergency barrier when performing first-aid on someone or as a lense to start fire with or a water-proof container for electronics or as you noted a barrier for engaging in sexual intercourse.

  • why can't you just use some zip bags or rubber gloves for that? :)

  • @jasgrip well you could...but some of the "emergency" kits I have seen they use a condom rather than a bag & gloves I would assume b/c of space. I mean roughly a 5 cm by 5 cm and less than a cm thick packet verses how ever big even the smallest bag of equal capacity would be. If I would go out bushcrafting I would take a few with me, not that I would need a sperm/STI barrier (being a dyke & all), but the multi use for small space/weight I think would be well worth it.

  • There is truth here, condoms take less space, but bags or gloves are not that heavy.I guess it's ok with condoms too,it just sounded weird :)

  • condom for collecting water if u got no water bottle or a tampon for fire lighting good too

  • I would agree with second part...first?hmm...I gotta be really desperate :D

  • i guess chainsaw r better than that bigass saw u got there... well, at least in an emergency :P

  • Is that a 12cm billy can?Just bought the 10cm one,great piece of gear.

  • you got that right MrUrban

  • hmmm machete :) what if police stoped and searched you?, I know that if you have a good reason " bushcraft " then it should be fine but only if you are planning to stay on a private land and you have the permission is thta right?

  • if you were ON private land (WITH concent) the police would not intervene (unless it was a gun ! and you would have special armed police with mp5's and glocks to deal with, no shit)

but if you got caught with a machete in the UK you would be arrested, have your DNA taken and go to court. You would most probably get an 18 month jail sentence and a fine.

they don't fuck about in the courts now because school kids have screwed knives up for everyone

Even replica guns will get u jailed

  • sad but true :( +1

  • @sweetypie000 What, so your saying that you cant take a bush craft knife and a machete camping into the woods with you in the UK? Even on private land with permission? What about Air rifles?

  • @sim0b if you get the wrong policeman who upholds the law to the letter they will take you to the cleaners and arrest you.

however, I take whatever i like with me and say 'fuck it' - if they can't take a joke

  • @sweetypie000 Exactly! The whole point of camping/survival is to live off the land with a knife and machete etc. They need to make the law clear as to the law but they dont. Its obvious what a Bushcraft knife, folding saw, Machete and axe etc are for, so i cant see why a copper would arrest someone using one, unless of course they were looking for some overtime. I know that an air rifle can be used on land with permission as long as it is concealed, uncocked, and unloaded. (Made safe).

  • @sweetypie000 you also have a police state over there in the uk mate.

  • Who decides what a "good reason" is? The policeman? Don't you have a separation of powers? Judge Dredd type cops roaming your streets?

  • Hey great video. I didn't know you Brits could still have knives. I thought they banned those?

  • lol

if you are wild camping in an appropriate place you are ok with one as long as you have a reasonable reason for having it

obviously if you carried one on the street you'd be arrested

incidentally, only people that can have knives in their cars are butchers or someone having reason to have a knife blah blah

  • I understand the reasoning but wow nanny state. Either way TY for the response.

  • omg ! dude!!!! where do you live??????????/

you cant even have knives? what the hell that is like a police state control grid lock down.

  • when I was a kid I went out on my motorbike wearing a jacket i'd previously used for wild camping. I got stopped by the police (17 year old tearing about on a bike you know how it is) and they searched me. Unfortunately, and this is no bullshit, I had forgottten about a 3.5 inch boot knife that i'f forgotten about and had lodged in one of the many pockets.

I got sent ot court and got TWO YEARS PROBATION and a £20 FINE

i'd never been in trouble with the police before

    that was in KENT

  • geesh.

in the united states you can carry pocket knives and big buck knives around if the police stop me and ask me if i am armed i just tell them i have a knife and they dont even care to see it.

its the guns they worry about here more than any other weapon. you can still cary guns around with you but you better have a permit and a registration for it or you could get a pretty hefty fine.

i have a ak47 and 2 shotguns come on over to my house we can shoot some old tvs and old cars lol.

  • careful careful young lad, 6 months ago in the US they tried to BAN pocket knives.just recently it was turned down. if you look at the laws in the UK, Europe in general,Australia and Canada the same laws are finding their way to the US. careful who you vote for and do some research on their background and voting history. make sure your friends do the same other wise things could be a lot different. take a look at gun and knife laws in the country you live in and around the world.

  • dont worry about us. the day they ban knives and firearms is the day you will see the next american revolution.

  • really i went to jail for 2 and a half months and only got 9 months probation for attempted murder?

  • I would get far, far away from that place, because it's about to turn into Soviet Russia real soon.

  • u 4got beer

  • I HEARD THAT! Beer is a must.

  • i bet they got puff

  • all you should need is a blade and a pot. magnesium and string are comfort items. overpacking is for pussies >_>

  • GooGobbler, any comparison to cum guzzler?

  • lol a jovial reference

  • tool

  • Well done.

  • i think the crusader cup fits on the bottom not the top of the canteen

  • all of that is not essential but its nice to have!!!

  • lol nice vid at last some guys who arnt retarded and gets on with the vid

  • I would add, a hennessy hammock ( tops for comfort and only weighs 1 kg ) A very good bush tucker book on the local area, Bicarb soda for deoderizing, washing and all-round excellent disinfect and miracle healer ( can kill fungus ) and miracle mineral supplement, one of the best antibacterial antiviral agents around. I also make high quality Pinole ( maize powder with oats and high nutrient grains, bit of honey ) native peoples used it for long trips. Iodine or MMS is great for water purifying.

  • Any recipes for the pinole stuff? What's maize powder?

Know of any natural repellents for ticks, turkey mites and chiggers that actually work? They're worse than the NWO...

  • Judging by the name I would guess that Maize Powder is Corn Powder......

  • wheres the liquor and guns?

  • I was force fed Liquor and a gun was being pointed at me when i was made to appear in this video, it was against my will :-)

  • Nice! I could see the emotion and fear in your eyes!

  • @secretsquirrell13 congrats on being retarded.

  • @calumsensible im not even going to dignify you with a response.

  • Heheheh. I like the couple of beer items on your short trip lists. One has to have a cold one sometimes! Great idea on the note pad. On my flint&steel tools, I have tied to each one, a piece of hack saw blade. They strike each time. On my sleep pad, I have a half foam and air mat. Comfort level is good for such a light mat.

  • I would advise people to take a pen and a notebook on their trips, - make a list of the items you carry with you and mark each one when you use them. Also make a list of items you would have needed but didn't take with you. That way you'll find out what you really need (but never forget the spare socks!).

  • i hav tht flash light!!!

  • Wow, truely amazing. How some people can makea mole hill into a mountain. Leave the guys alone, their good guys. It's not a big deal. I personally have 13 mora knives because there so cheap! I could understand if the knife was a rat or BK 3,5 or 9 knife, then yeah, treat it like a life and death emergency. But the fact still remains that it would be their business and THEIR knife!!

  • Comment removed

  • Howling skull-

Your points ARE valid you made, they make sense. Sorry if I sounded condescending, it was nothing personal. It's just this flint & steel issue has been a little overkill compared to the main point at hand. Their point of the video was to educate on what THEY use out in the bush. The flint & steel issue was a landslide in conversation compared to learning what to use for gear if a newly inexperienced one is learning the ropes of hiking in a desolate area.

  • I know Mora's are cheap, but that's no excuse to ruin a tool. I talk about preserving your resources and tools, even safety. If that's something they want to shut me up for, so be it and OK, it's up to them, but I don't need you telling me to leave anyone alone. I'm not attacking the "good guys", I only questioned their method of using a knife, nothing personal.

  • O.k.. Agreed. You have your right to your opinion. By putting your video up on youtube you will definitely get the opinions, whether reasonable or not.. But wow how overly passionate some can get over a small issue. Let me tell you this, If I was in a life and death situation, and I so desperately needed a fire and the flint didn't spark on the false edge, I would use the sharpened edge with no questions asked. It would be better than a piece of rock.

  • who gives a fuck what he does with his OWN knife? seriously quit your belly aching you fucking wanker.

  • a nice kit layout... but not really a bushcraft kit tho is it. more of a comfort camping kit. thats the sort of thing i used to take with me before i learned ways to get by without most of it. saving me on space and weight for the trip. and therefor saving on energy allowing me to walk further away from everyday life to the prfect retreat and hide-away

  • Knife is not a bottle cap opener, screwdriver, etc. You use the right tool for the right purpose. That's how you keep your tools in condition and prevent injuries. It probably took some time and effort for you friend to sharpen that knife, and you ruined his work in 1 second. Plain sharpening won't fix that blade anymore, it has to be reshaped back to normal with a file or grindstone. Knife has been Man's best friend since the stone age, have some respect to it.

  • Comment removed

  • PS...whats the main difference between a stainless steel blade, and a carbon blade on a knife??? Ive opted for the Stainless steel as it seems stronger. I heard that the Carbon rusts easily and can cause cancer!??? Cheers.

  • When steel has at least 13% chromium it's considered "stainless". The Mora is a very good choise for a stainless steel knife

Carbon steel is stronger, more easily sharpened, holds edge longer, and cuts better than stainless. You must dry it carefully if it gets wet (stainless also goes bad if not properly maintained). Never put a knife in sheath if it's moist. That talk about cancer is total nonsense. All steels contain carbon, also stainless.

  • If you find a good knife that works for you, it doesn't matter whether its stainless steel or carbon steel, in either case you must take good care of it. All knives get rusty, dull and fall apart if not used and maintained properly.

  • I'm sure you're all great guys, but I'd respect you more if you turned up in the forest in your suit and garotted a rabbit with your tie. Then substituted your your brogues for a boomerang and hunted deer with them. I'm not taking the biscuit, these are my honest opinions.

  • Coffee and biscuits, for three guys. Why are you in the woods? Why? Why? There must be a greater purpose than coffee and biscuits?

  • Bushcraft shopping is a new fashion. I agree with Mr Chucko. It's all about the office, isn't it?

  • great kit

    thanks for the video

  • What will you do when ur Bic lighter runs out of fuel or doesn't work because it got wet? Then you will need a flint & steel or a magnesium stick.

  • Whats with the flint &steel issues here? Who cares what side he used to strike it with. Even if it does dull the blade in time, it would only be crucial to save ur knife if you lived out in the bush.Besides, has everyone forgot about the invention of a knife sharpener? Also,if he says that the back side of his knife was not activating sparks, would you keep striking that side like a jackass, instead of using the side that works? The whole point of the vid is to share what he uses out in the bush

  • Thank you mate

  • thank god. a person who can see sense. gooniefan and I had begun to think they didn't exist on youtube lately :-) thanks for this comment

search for "bushcraft kit essentials 2 - the reply" to see the long awaited second part to this video

  • Agreed m8 Good post. The basics tend to be the best. Ive just brought a OG Gortex bivi bag, (2 infact!) A crusader (expensive), x2 58 water bottles (solid!), Heximan, mora knife, stone, messtins, and a swedish fire steel aswell as a DPM PLCE belt kit webbing (6 pouches) to put it all into for when on the move (and a IRR daysack), as we camp out in the forsets of Wales! Those bivi bags are amazing. No need for a tent at all! Just put everything into it&cover ya head when it rains. New World Order

  • Great Kit man. You know your shit.

  • jay ... I think we need to disable the comment feature on this video ... i'm bored with all the stupid comments.. i'm gonna post a video reply in a second

  • Very good, well done!!

  • great tips!!

  • good effort :)

  • Some of the comments and questions here are evidently from idiots. This guy that did the vid, only resembles a smart bushman/hiker. Advice viewers: close your mouths and listen with your ears. Then after you've done this, COMPREHEND WITH YOUR BRAIN.

  • This is the best and most relevant comment we have had about our video in a long time .... your spot on mate !!! we are kind of sick of explaining the knife / fire steel business

  • I agree, Thanks mate

  • when you strike the fire steel you want to make sure you use the sharp side of your knife so it dulls it out quickly when your life depends on it....this guy is a genius!!

  • Read the comments further down for the 5 millionth time, i cant be bothered to explain anymore

  • can you strike a Firesteel with the dull side? Try if you like.

  • you know what...i can almost garauntee that it is better than the sharp side. I actually use the back of my blade because im not an idiot, but i guess some people just dont have common sense these days

  • Mate.....what kind of metal is your knife made out of that it will be blunted by striking a firesteel?

    What is Firesteel, Magnesium?

Whatever it is, your knife is forged out of much harder materials. But if you find that your knife is blunting too quick then maybe it is too hard/brittle and you need a different blend of metals/forging procedure.

  • Hi Mate

my knife blade is stainless....i just dont find it neccesary to strike with the shapr edge of your blade when the back of the blade does a better job.

  • wow, i dont really remember typing that comment. It actually sounds like i know about knives when i read it back. But i dont.

Ive never used a firesteel either. Ive always been a smoker until recently and wouldnt be found dead without a lighter. But i am able to make a friction fire. If any metal will light a firesteel then why bother to use the cutting side, it can only do it harm i guess.

But for me, instead of carrying one of those i would just grab a bic lighter. They are great.

  • any metal wont light a firesteel. Aluminum doesnt work and brass doesnt either. Bic lighters are good but not great. Below 0 they dont work to well. Its good that you quit smoking because its bad for you.

  • our knife in the video is the carbon steel version of the frosts mora so it wont light with the dull edge ........ !!!

  • the knife in the video we use is a carbon steel frosts mora ... that is why we used the sharp edge as the dull side WILL NOT work

  • im only 11 and i got 15 knives (about)

and i was wondering where can i buy para cord so i can make a bush bow.

  • You should give the Mora Clipper more credit, calling it a beginners knife is a bit misleading, my colleagues and I who work as wilderness field instructors are all quite fond of it.

  • Great vid! Grimbos a turd burglar!

  • can anyone tell me the uk laws on carrying knives such as te mora clipper in forests......

i am considering buying a bowie knife which will be my first but want to know about the laws regarding knives first.........

    by the way...

great vid.... thanks for uploading.. 5star

  • dont worry bout it your in the boons mate

  • survival ?

    more like a hotel stay....

    unreal...
